The Fantastic Welsh NHS 09:41 - Dec 16 with 1820 viewsjohnlangy

In most areas of life people tend to be critical when things go wrong but don't offer praise when things go well. Some people also criticise the Welsh NHS for no reason other than it's the Welsh NHS run by the Welsh Government but that's a different discussion altogether. Those people have an agenda.

So here goes. I had a phone appointment with my GP two weeks last Monday. As a result of our chat he arranged a face to face appointment two hours later. He then organised a visit to Morriston Hospital for Monday last week. He also contacted NPT Baglan who came back to me later that first week with an appointment for the 15th (urology - ).

Last Monday I went to Morriston and was seen slightly earlier than my actual appt time. The three people I was in contact with were fantastic. Yesterday I went to NPT. The nine people who dealt with me (that does include receptionists) were equally brilliant. Tremendously efficient and incredibly personable. All of them.

I couldn't fault anyone. And I told them so at the time. And obviously I also thought I should praise them on social media hence this post.

Well done the fantastic Welsh NHS.

Totally agree.

Great people in an almost impossible situation.

We are very lucky to have these heroes looking after us every single day.

It sounds like you had a tremendous experience.

Meanwhile, people are waiting hours for an ambulance after suffering heart attacks and other life threatening medical emergencies - many of whom are dying who otherwise would have been saved had an ambulance arrived within appropriate time.

In October, there was outcry in England after NHS England published their worst A&E waiting times in history. 75.2% were admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours. Meanwhile in Wales, the figure stands at 68.7%. It is desperately sad.

Here's another stat for you. More people in Welsh hospitals wait >12 hours in emergency units than in the whole of England, despite England having a population nearly 20x that of Wales.

Those who criticise the Welsh NHS aren't doing so because of an "agenda". It is because we are frightened by not only what is happening in Wales, but at how so many people are accepting of such disgraceful results.

They should criticise the systematic underfunding, not the hard working organisation itself.

It's a bit laughable that any organisation with more than £150bn in annual spending and nearly 1.5m employees can be described as "underfunded" by anyone keeping a straight face.

The NHS has plenty of money. It wastes collossal sums of it.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

By enlarge the NHS has some fantastic staff working for it most of the ones I’ve encountered really care about the service they deliver?

The population of the UK has increased by almost 10 million over the last years from 58m to 68m which mans 10m extra service users, we also have more older people (who are a lot more expensive to care for) and from 2010 we had “austerity.” NHS trusts across the UK are spending more than they receive and it’s estimates most are in the red - that was all pre Covid. We also have one of the lowest ratio of beds per person in the developed world and the our ratio of intensive care beds compares unfavourably too. On top of all to, the NHS can’t recruit enough staff and as of June there were 39,000 vacancies for registered nurses in NHS England alone.

There are issues with bed blocking as elderly patients who are fit for release can’t be returned home as there aren’t enough carers and costs for services that can be arranged can be extortionate.

People always comment on waste, while I think they could get rid of some of the managers etc I don’t think the savings from “waste” would actually make much of a difference in the grand scheme.
Expectations are high, but expenditure isn’t commensurate. We need a mature conversation as to what we want from the NHS and what we are prepared to pay.
I suspect most people would be happy to pay an extra 1p in the pound for a quality NHS, however for those on huge money I suspect they may not be and would rather rock up in Harley Street, Santa Maria etc etc when they needed to and pay privately as opposed to paying more tax.

The NHS has grown into too large a beast to be managed by politicians it should be run separately & not used for political point scoring.

It was set up to manage patients suffering from things like heart attacks, cancer & trauma injuries not doing a massive amount of elective surgeries as they do now.

Labour is at the helm in Wales & it’s a travesty the waiting times for people in so much pain which effects their standard of life.

The amount of waste in the NHS is a disgrace the usual thicko’s on this site will defend it as like most things in life they have no idea what goes on.

Agree it should be run for the benefit of patients and nt politicians, but there has to be accountability.

I agree with your comments about emergency care that should always take precedence. In terms of elective surgery, what kind of elective surgery are you talking about, what needs to be trimmed?

I’m not saying it should be trimmed but there were around 170000 hip & knee operations a year in England & Wales pre Covid & the NHS can’t cope.

An orthopaedic surgeon gets paid around £110000 annually by tax payers & in Welsh hospitals are currently working 1 day a week for the NHS ( due to staff issues) & 4 days a week topping up their salaries doing private work.

Do people really believe that’s right?

Super centres should be set up to do orthopaedic surgery & standard hospitals be kept for the likes of cancer, heart attack, trauma injuries.

Also

If you require hip or knee surgery currently from doctor to see a surgeon in Wales will take around 18 months, you then join a waiting list of 5 years growing by the day.

Just blame the Senedd they are in charge of the NHS in Wales. That is why it is performing so badly despite huge sums of money being thrown at it.

In answer to the OP I'm afraid not everyone can relate to such praise , certainly not if you're misfortunate to be under the "care" of a certain surgery in the east of the City , and no not everyone has an agenda just saying as they see it .

You're right Boundy. I'm sure there are many, many examples of bad service. I was just trying to redress the balance to some extent with my particular experience.

With regard to my comment about agendas, I was thinking particularly about one poster who essentially says everything England and Westminster good, everything Wales and Senedd bad.

I think the truth lies somewhere in between. There is enormous wastage which, for me, mostly comes from bad management but there is also truth to underfunding. Population growth and an ageing population too while they have cut beds, cut A&E's. Devolution and the seperate NHS trusts don't help in my opinion. Millions could be saved on procurement for example, if there was one office dealing with it, buying is such massive bulk that it'd save money on wages as well as on medicines and equipment.

It's the perfect storm and it's no wonder the NHS is near to burnout.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

The other peoblem with "trusts" is duplication of effort and staff positions.
You end up with top heavy organisations with too many chiefs for the indians doing the front line work.
Those chiefs are also on big salaries as well.
