Jamie Paterson to have ‘Talks’ this morning with Swansea City 24th Jan 2022 09:00
Swansea City will hold talks with Jamie Paterson this morning reference his strange behaviour over recent weeks in an attempt to resolve his current situation we are told. No wether it’s Swansea or Paterson who has made the first move isn’t certain, but what is certain is this will not be a one way conversation. 0

Desperate player without a club signing the offer put in front of him. But yeah no one forced him.

Low pay is obviously relative. The club knows it's been getting great value for money there, hence the extension. Busy trying to shift players on twice the wage with half the talent.

I agree with your logic Jasper….but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth the same as when Siggi and Ayew the younger downed tools.

Gylfi seriously led the swans down the garden path, but the finance gained was unbelievable.

I think i remember reading we only saw a measly £30m or something once everyone was paid their share of the fee. Player, agent, former clubs all take a cut. And factoring of the future payments.

I think he's looking for more than a 4% increase tbh. He's got teammates on twice what he's earning and contributing nothing on the pitch by comparison.

Easy to be loyal to a club as a fan. Completely different relationship between an employee and their employer. Football is a business, if he'd not performed well he'd have been out the door end of the year, but because he's done so well he's been locked down for another season on low pay. Any other industry you could walk to another company and no one would fault you, but that's not football.

All Swansea players last season and seasons before had to watch players on Premier league wages on the books. Players like Ayew for example on £80,000 a week. Wages of other players are not something players can worry about.

Some players on bigger money signed before Covid 19 restrictions for one thing when there was more money about.

One issue that might be a mitigating circumstance is the detail of the contract. Was Patterson due an automatic pay rise after 25 games in any case?. Did the early activation lead to no wages increase and a cute club management manoeuvre . This was suggested in the wales online article.

Patterson's options are not great without a climb down. It seems the big attraction of Patterson was the free transfer option. Bigger wages are dependant on that fact. The time for negotiation was last summer.

Comparisons with other businesses are not valid. Narsingh sat on his deal not impressing Potter and could not be dismissed.

Plenty of people earning a fraction of what he is on have not had a pay rise for years.

National insurance, pension contributions fuel costs all going up.

Don't think Patterson will have to worry about any of that.

Impossible to defend his behaviour just stinks of greed.

The club were taking a gamble on a player with a history of injuries and who hadn't set the world alight at this level. It's only after he's proved his worth and fitness and the club have extended his contract, that he's recounted his blessings and recognised he's set to come up a few short next season.

Most people would accept entry-level wages somewhere if they're going to be out of work otherwise. But if a year down the line the company doesn't bring you up to the same compensation as your colleagues, most of whom you've outperformed, anyone's going to be a bit miffed. Even more so if you've been told "yeah we'll look after you, Jamie" either when you signed or when the goals were flying in.

Footballers are paid well because their labour generates a lot of money. It's competitive sport, everyone wants the best they can get. Should they all play football for £25k a year because other jobs (some very important jobs) earn that? Is asking for more greedy? I know the companies that employ them would love to pay them less. Club owners and CEOs and agents would be delighted.

I can guarantee you the savings wouldn't make their way to the fans or general public.

You can’t compare this situation with Sigurdsson ? Siggy gave us a few good seasons in his prime & only asked for a move when a big club came in for him. This situation is nothing of the sort as there is no offer on the table with the contract extension now triggered.

Who knows what’s happening, it’s possible that WBA ( or whoever his agent spoke to) may have thought they could do a deal based on his wages, now interest has waned where they would have to stump up a transfer fee. The player and his agent need to wind their necks in, give a public apology then knuckle down & get on with it

No argument about the finance. As a fan I’m glad he was sold….just as I would be if Patterson went for a fee. We took a gamble on him and if we make a profit on his sale so be it.

Patterson really has very few options head of him. He is contracted to Swansea for another 18 months. He will be 32 when that ends. Is he seriously going to fiddle around go for 18 months and not give it his best shot.?

He cannot play for anyone else. One option for the owners if he is not minded to play for Swansea and Martin is to take him on loan to DC United.

Very fair points Jasper, the issue is none of us know what was said ....is there an increase in pay but does that not kick in until a later date..despite the extension being triggered early?

Has the club manouvered this because another club made an enquiry and by extending the contract the club think they can command a better fee?

I cant beleive there wernt some improvement clauses based on perfromance etc despite wanting to settle for "entry level" wages at the time of signing.....but then football has a crazy approach to wages eben for self elected DoFs

Jamie was told "we will give you a chance at Swansea on a one year contract".

"If you do well we will extend your contract for another year to give you security".

He has done well and Swansea city honoured their side of the deal.

He is probably getting paid more than Piroe, Downdes, Manning or other good performers. If he wants to leave he will not be held to his contract.

Football fans like to say contracts mean nothing in football. Actially the reverse it true. 'Contracts mean everything'. Swansea's owners have been stung honouring contracts for the likes of Bony, Narsingh and Ayew who were all grossly overpaid for Championship football. They fulfilled their contracts and took the parachutes and then left. Connor Roberts and co could not believe the money they were on but did not distract them as they were good professionals.

I’d assumed that’s not enforceable in court given the clause is reportedly 25 games played before extension and Pato hasn’t reached that yet, hence the strop and refusal to play

Manning came to us because we were offering more than QPR could afford. He'd turned down offers there so they felt they had no choice to sell.

Swansea will accept a fee from QPR for Patterson if they want to make an offer but he is under contract until 2023 so the offer should reflect this. Swansea do not make the rules they just abide by them.

The 25 games was put in the contract for the benefit of the player not he club. It is a "if you do well" option and is automatic.

You need to ask yourself what would have happened if the club had not extended his contract?

Patterson because he is playing well might well have declined to play anyway to avoid the automatic 25 game trigger on lower wages. Did he suggest this to Martin before the trigger?

He may not have agreed to play with or without an extension simply to get a free transfer in the Summer and bigger wages next season. You have to consider who you are more likely to believe. The club with its personal department or a football agent?.

Firstly nobody knows all the facts apart from those involved and those who drew up the contract.

But it is my opinion that the contract stated that, the player had the right to an extension of 12 months after 25 games. It also stated that the club could extend the contract for another 12 months anytime they wished. Patterson was not against this because he was without a club and 12 months would be good 24 months would be better.

The club heard that other clubs were sniffing round Patterson and extended the contract, as they were entitled to do. Patterson and his agent were not happy as a better pay day deal has gone, as any signing on payment would now have to go on a transfer fee.

What I have been told could be way off the mark, but it makes sense.
