Martin's "Smash and Grab" comment 19:52 - Feb 2 with 2822 viewsmagicdaps10

Just read it 🤣🤣

Couldn't have put the previous 2 seasons better myself. Martin has made a stick for himself here but I must admit that I couldn't disagree with his quote.

I heard a comment last night... If we finished 21st this season then we have achieved the same as we did losing to Brentford in the play off final, starting the following season in the Championship.

Back to that Martin quote, obviously a dig at Cooper!?

Basic skills in football are passing, control and movement.
I said that Martins statement is a big one but ultimately its true but he as I say needs to step up after saying what he did.
All managers Wether a rookie manager or not had a job on their hands whomever took the job.

Its a big job here not helped by what happened in the smash or grab seasons previous, we need to build it back up and we are hitting as expected some difficult dips in the road, some will moan others will stay calm and patient.

So we currently have a match day team with only at most 3 players who featured regularly under Cooper ie Naughts, Grimes, Cabango yet I still see no movmemnt especially at throw ins the thrower is constantly looking for an option and most of these players have only been here this season

People make it sound like Martin has walked into a club full of duffers ....the issue is MArtin
For the sake of repeating myself

HE doesnt play to players strenghts
I have used this example before, Rhys WIlliams played for Liverpool last season on the PL and Champions League he made 19 appearances playing on the left hand side of the central 2, Ben Cabango played 23 times last season mainly on the right hand side of a back 3 or central 2
Why because Williams is naturally stronger on his left foot and Cabango on his right but whatdoes MArtin do he plays them on their "weaker" sides...whilst also trying to instill a different playing style.....is that good Managment?

I could go on....why didnt he bring Bidwell on to shore up the left hand side and reinstate the succesful back line we had had before it got broken up by susoension....as we were getting mullered down there

we all could see Downes was likely to get a red at QPR but he didnt hook him resuloting in us finishing with 10 men and being without him for Hull

I am critical but then no more so than others were last season despite us winning more than we lost...

How long do we need to remain calm and patient for?

I'm still calm but I've run short on patience.

There are basics not being done, indeed, as you point out we seem to be doing the opposite of what makes sense.

I did eventually try to renew my season before the early bird deadline but couldn't get through and couldn't be bothered to go down there. Right now that looks like a blessing in disguise.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

With patience and understanding.

He's learning and he knows he has made mistakes. If you are annoyed then you can bet your bottom dollar that Martin is annoyed 100 times more than yourself.

I am not making out he is some messiah and he will work wonders but we have to understand the job he has here, was never just a straight take over from Cooper..... We would have appointed a Warnock or a Pulis if that was the route we wanted to go down.

We wouldn't have had the players for a Warnock or Pulis side and the players wouldn’t be used to playing such a way.

Cooper never played a similar style to them and still doesn’t now. England national team would be a better example, so maybe Southgate.

What do you think Martin is learning out of interest?

There are only 20 games left. Logically in these circumstance the size of the squad in February a does not need to match the size of the squad in September.

Longman is a £500k footballer in midfield. Swansea have got plenty of them. Fulton and Dhanda hardly used and refusing to go. Cooper liked them both and got the US guys to give Fulton a long contract on big dough. No one else will go near that wage. Its the market.

Clubs are paying players too much and these clubs only want sales out and loans in.

Allen and Winter know the brief. The 'young player talent pathway'. Young players will get their chance. In house players only Cabango is getting his chance. Joseph is club signing and getting bits and bobs only. Whittaker, Cullen , Brandon Cooper, Dan Williams, Benda all failed their Summer auditions and have gone on loan to come back as more rounded footballers.

We dont need a another midfielder. We're overstocked with them.
We do need a striker and players who will give him chances.
We didn't really need a CH nor a Goalkeeper.
What we need is a new coach and a new direction and honesty with the fans not fed a load of media feely tut.

Yet another myth perpetuated form last season that we played a la Pullis and Warnock but we never kept hoofing it up the pitch we often played out from the back and looked to move the ball along the floor.

Cooper didnt beleive in fannying about in front of goal though

We were defensive without the ball but as I have seen posted elsewhere this week we didnt park the bus either.... but that is all history I am more concerend about the here and now

You say he is learning but he often repaeats the same mistakes....and how it can be said that there was huge change to be made given our acadmy players would have been used to playing the "Swansea way " ie playing it out etc under Cam Toshack...so

Again why go and loan WOlf this season if its a transisiton season why not recall Ollie Cooper and expose him to the championship so he is properly prepared for next season when this transition season is over

Good post
We need to simply look to the future and that means players who stay with us not go back to other clubs.
Pretty simple really.

Its why I dont get Martin's long term project mantra

Now you are talking, look to the future.

Don't let the present issues get to you if you are looking to the future, the present is part of the ride.

You contradicted yourself in your post but the first bit is correct.

Hang on now, the last third of the season we played quite a lot of long balls for the forwards to chase. Then there's the "not fannying" remark, come on now, we turned down many chances to shoot choosing to pass instead. Lowe was a regular at taking another touch, trying to beat another man and wasting a situation. we got deeper and deeper as the season went on.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I meant in front of our goal Cat we had more of a if in doubt hoof it out at times..but we still played it out...thats where Stokes goal up there came from as Geuhi underhit a pass..

Im not saying the football was Mrtinez, Rodgers or Laudrupesque but Warnock and Pullis it wasnt

Whichever way it went, the football was poor to watch and while it is much different right now, it is still poor.

It is just as boring watching a team have 70% possession but do next to nothing with it as watching Coopers last few months here. Martin made promises he doesn't seem able to keep. If he can't change then one day the change will be forced on him.

How can you get basic skills "rammed out of you", by this I presume you are talking about passing?

AS I do not see what esle you can be referring to?

This nonsense has to stop its absurd!

I get it many didnt like Cooper, but his results for us and now Forest demonstrate he must have something as a coach/manager not forgetting his success with the England U17s

But how a professional footballer gets the basic skills "rammed out " of them I cannot buy into that...Players either have the ability to pass or they dont..

I will tell what I see a manager who is good at talking, I dont see where he has demosntrated he is a "good" manager let alone a "great " manager

I am not adovocating his scaking I just dont get the way he is being talked about as "great" manager in the making and the pedestal he seemed to be put on when he arrived.

He is a "rookie" manager but is now in his third season as one we have had other rookie managers who delivered back to back promotions ( Tosh in his first 3 seasons) and Martinez who delivered a promotion and in his third season got us to 8th in the Championship after less than 1 and a half seasons managing in Div 1 a similar pedigree to that of Martin wouldnt you say

Maybe the owners have refllected they have already spent circa £5M this season and what have they to show for it? Whereas last season for a lot less spend they recouped £20M form us reaching the play off final

I hope Martin starts to learn I am still unconvinced...amazing he is taking the credit for MKDons current success and whilst I recognise he has played a part when you read the MKDons forums the fans talk of a new way of playing more attakcing than they saw under Russ...

What Martin is doing is draining the hopes of the average fan with turgid drivel and players being demotivated as they are told to play in a way they must know is dumb.

Why would a new keeper received a ball in the first minute of his first h game with new teammates then attempt to dribble around an attacking player rather than clear the ball.

The obsession with stroking it at the back is the reason for all our problems .
It affects all.

We all know this but are afraid to admit so.

It was a poor window for sure, but he can’t be that mad.

The board have spent around £5.5m this year on transfers and sanctioned elite loans like Wolf and Williams as well as bring in free transfers like Pato and Ntcham.

He has to make it work now. Nearly every position on the field will now be filled by a player brought in this season.

Fisher
Christie
Burns
Ogbeta
Downes
Ntcham
Pato (when he returns)
Wolf
Piroe
Obafemi

Add in Grimes who is a player he clearly rates highly and the only thing missing that he hasn’t brought in is some CB’s to partner Burns.

But he’s already had Williams from Liverpool and didn’t play him. Has Cabango, Bennett and Naughton at his disposal.

Not sure what else he was expecting really.

The only disappointment for me is we could have done with a striker / centre forward preferably with some height.
Otherwise a better than usual January.

I just listened to that presser, some of the comments by Russell were drenched in delusion.

He even tried to take credit for MK Dons doing well after he left. He couldn’t get them into the top half but now another manager has been able to he reckons that that was because he was building and now they are reaping the rewards.

So they just happened to be ready for success the very game after he left

He also had a dig at Cooper saying essentially he was lucky to consistently win for two seasons on the bounce (now 3 of course) and was relying on 1 or 2 good players…. Not forgetting that Piroe and Pato have scored 67% of our league goals not including how many more they contributed with their assists.

Martin needs to knuckle down and concentrate on us. He seems to hate criticism and avoids scrutiny of his own performance as a manager at every single opportunity.

Makes excuses for his own shortcomings while taking credit for other managers successes. Would be nice if he tried to be successful himself instead of sacrificing his CV to make other managers after him look good. Very selfless, like a football manager version of Gandhi.

Interesting how Martin claims credit for how MKDons are doing this season

Here are some facts and stats

Last season top of possesion table 64%
Finished 13th in league
Won 39% drew 24% lost 37% of games played
Averaged 1.39 goals per game

This season manager change
4th in possesion table 56.6%
currently 4th in league in play off place

Won 54% drawn 24% and lost 24 % of games played
averaging 1.65 goals per game

it seems there is less focus on the possesion stats and more on winning games? less possesion yet better league standing whilst this season we top the possesion league table but are struggling in 17th.

Martin does need ot look at himself and our history over the years I have followed the Swans we have often relied on a couple of players such as Waddle Latchford, Trundle for MArtinez read Scotland and Gomez, Rodgers, Sinclair , Borinin, Siggi , Laudrup Michu, Monk Bony, so to single out Cooper is a bit rich alos given that without Piroe and Pato this season we would be relegation fodder!

He is a great talker but when you start to delve the facts reveal a lot!

Are we all still happy to stick with the process? Maybe Martin needs to adopt a different one

We needed a striker with experience at this level.

We are creating chances and not putting them away. Whilst there are issues with the pace at which we move the ball, they would be negated by us taking more of the chances we create.

Who would Longman have replaced in midfield?
Grimes the club captain?
Downes the million pound summer signing?
Wolf the marquee loan signing?
Ntcham, high earner who has played 100+ games for Celtic and last season was a £5M player?
