Energy Prices 06:56 - Feb 4 with 9906 viewsjojaca

Mine is up for renewal, just browsing on the Martin Lewis website and the cheapest is £290 a month for fix rate, my jaw has hit the floor. My wages only went up up £20 a month last year and my gas and electric has basically doubled from around £140 a month. This will be proper rejig to finances just to make ends meet.

Even when you know, you never know?

Any houses that are not super insulated, leak tested without UHF and have not been sized up by a competent Heating designer have no hope. You will end up burning electric like Blackpool. Do not even think about it. Wait for the Hydrogen revolution IMHO.

Massive work being done on a mixture been gas and hydrogen, called Hythane, I've been told in briefs I've had with work. Its much safer.

But Hydrogen is not like natural gas, you have expend energy making it.
It also has less calorific value by volume.
It is another green boondoggle that someone is going to make Billions out of.

Much as i agree with Johnson out, Energy suppliers are private companies and the prices are not set by the govt. It's called capitalism

We used to have UK nationalised energy.

Indy Wales could have that.

Privatisation is a pure scam.
Same electricty or same gas over same pipes, cables.
So it is a paper exercise
No real value at all.

Wales today produces twice as much energy as we use, but it still costs more than anywhere in England. Why ?

We are getting shafted again.

Johnson OUT.

The poorest areas of the UK have some of the highest costs, that can’t be right when we have a national grid which is capable of transporting electricity across the UK.

Some really good posts on this thread, FWIW I think we need to become greener and use more renewable energy, but we have to have a plan B for when Mother Nature isn’t playing ball. I think there has been a complete lack of focus by this government and its predecessors on the security of our energy supply, our new nuclear power stations are years behind schedule and with the shift in focus to electric vehicles we are going to need a massive increase in our generating capacity.

In terms of energy efficiency, a lot of our housing stock is very old and poorly insulated. Extra insulation in the attic is a cheap quick fix, but things like cavity wall insulation can be very problematic and I know of quite a few people who’ve had to have their insulation removed.

I was thinking of having solar panels fitted, but doing the sums based on today’s figures I might not even break even after 25 years- what kind of incentive is that to go green.!

Edit, at the time of posting, 49.3% of the electric we are using is being generated by renewable sources, 2.1% is hydro, 47.2% is wind, 11% fossil fuels with the rest coming from nuclear, biomass and the inter connectors between the UK and European countries.

Yes, some great posts on this thread.

Energy is too important to hand over to the get rich quick Tory mob.

France is doing it the right way.
The French increase is 4%.

The energy companies have been on a good screw for years.
Its time the people of the uk said enough is enough.

Nationalise domestic power supplies and renewable uk based tidal, wind and solar seems a lot more secure than gas from Russia.
If Truss can fly on a government jet to Australia then dont tell me there is no magic money tree.
After all its the very same magic money tree that coughed up billions to Tory mates for PPE that could not be used by the NHS, and dont get me started on the Nightingale hositals that had no staff.

The energy price rise is a Tory choice.
They promised lower energy pricrs after Brexit, another lie ?

The prices rising are NOT a Tory choice, they don't control what other governments do, how much gas or electric they buy or what private companies outside the UK's law system charge for those things.

What the Tory's can control though, is exactly the same as any UK government can/could control. This is where I agree with you, Kilky, privatisation has been a total sham. it's been a pension scheme for the already rich. The same thing happened with Royal Mail, these companies were sold off with the vast majority of shares going to hedge funds and billionaires. All utilities should be publicly owned and run as not for profit or all profits should go to the exchequer and used to jeep tax bills down, after any investment needed is taken care of obviously.

When you say France is doing it the right way, how much does it cost in France? Would my annual usage be cheaper in France, or more expensive? If it's the latter then any rise is still prohibitive.

We need to nationalise, saying an Indy Wales could do that isn't really accurate. There would be a massive expense because we would need to buy the infrastructure. it's a fine idea but all that an Indy Wales needs would mean us starting off life under a massive, massive debt. We'd have a huge debt and without UK funding, probably a big deficit too. You say the UK has no money but Wales could possibly be worse off.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

From what I can see the prices have been pretty comparable, direct KWH price comparisons are difficult because wages and standards of living are different. From what I can see, the KWH prices are similar but it the price of one KWH is considered against the average wage then its slightly more in the UK. When the price cap goes up in April, I think our increase is around 50% (while the French electricity price increase has been pegged to 4% by the French Government) we’ll be paying a lot more for our electricity.

Of course it is a Tory choice.
They chose to follow the Labour "Climate Change Act" and enhance it.
This country sits on decades of Oil, Gas and Coal and once co-led the world in Nuclear power.
If you think it is bad now wait till Net Zero policies really start to take hold.

They chose to follow Labour....so then, whoever was in power we're screwed because Labour started it, is that what you're saying?

Kilky said the high prices were a tory choice, that's not true. The global prices are high caused by circumstances which were driven by the pandemic. That prices could be lower if successive governments hadn't been so useless is true but again, it wasn't a plan to raise prices, it was just a nasty side effect of flawed policy and a global pandemic.

Wrong again interconnects between EUROPE are increasing Al the time.
The lastest one NSL between Norway and UK opened 2021.
IFA2 between France and UK opened in 2021.
Nemo link betwen Belgium and UK opened in 2019.

These are in addition to IFA1 between France and UK as well as one between Netherlands and UK and the ones between UK and Ireland and Scotland and NI.

All these were built after privatisation with profits .

Your claim that the UK has not invested enough in renewable is totally absurd.
Top four European countries wind generation capacity
German 61Gw
Spain 25Gw
UK 23Gw
France 16Gw
Figures 2019 installed capacity.

Today's peak renewable UK 17.4Gw Fossil fuel 3.7Gw at the same time.

I don't know the figures but I have a gut feeling that we are paying a lot more in green taxes than is being invested.

Do you know the numbers?

Spain has over 20 million fewer people than the Uk in a much larger country, plenty of room there for wind farms.

Yes the cap has risen, but what you pay still goes on how much energy you use?

Wrong , the standing charge for electricity was £86.43 a year, the increase in cap will take that up to £167.38 from April 1st
Standing charge for Gas £90.77 up to £94.62 from April 1st

So even if you use zero of both your bill still goes up about 50%.

Very funny the usual idiots blaming BOJO for the worldwide increase in price of gas😂😂😂😂 the idiots will be blaming Brexit next😂😂😂😂😂😂

Very difficult to get up todate figures in Europe for electricity as most figures are late 2021.
Suffice to say rising throughout Europe. France which used to be a net exporters of electricity is now having to import it in an attempt to cut down on generating it from Gas.

The Nordic countries have cheaper prices as a higher % of their electricity is generated from hydroelectric. That is one area tye UK could improve on given the amount of rain we get. Most of our reservoirs do not generate any power even when supplying water for homes and industry. Often when the reservoirs are fu the water just flows over the top of the dams.

No France are not importing energy overall.
They are taking Germany's surplus Wind energy (5.35GW) and exporting to
Italy (2.93GW)
Switzerland (2.97GW)
Spain (2.08GW)
UK (2.01GW)
Everything depends on what the Wind in Europe is doing, at the moment it is very high, last month it was very low. That is why countries have to spend so much time and money on balancing their Grids.

Too late. They privatised it in the 80’s/90’s. Now we’re reaping the rewards of losing our energy security to foreign and sometimes hostile interests. We’ve shot ourselves in the foot and blown a leg off.

We need to go Green, but it needs to be done in a balanced and measured approach. We are emerging more use of electric cars etc and we barely generate enough electric to keep the lights on.
