We need somebody in the Russian elite to make a move to displace Putin but most of them will most likely calculate that it would be a high risk move to gain what? To be the bloke who has to mop up, who has to tell the Russian people that they now have NATO surrounding them? Who rules over a ruined economy?

I think you’ve raised some good points here, Putin (and by default Russia) are in a difficult position, Putin could well become more desperate and “lash” out. His actions have managed to unite almost all of Western Europe and the industrialised “West” against him. China is watching and continuing to trade, but they’ll be watching with keen interest and not want to alienate the States and EU who are their largest trading partners.
Russia now faces some pretty significant economic challenges and ordinary people are likely to find life very difficult. If we’re going to see diplomacy prevail, I think a negotiated settlement which involves a degree of compromise all around while allowing the various parties to save face is probably the best solution although it may not be the “right” solution.
Putin controls the Russian media - the people only hear what he ( the State) wants them to know, so when economic hardship hits it wouldn’t be difficult for him to blame the West and to fan the fires of hate and resentment. There needs to be an avoidance of any similarities with post WW1 Germany.
Putin needs to be able to show success as does Zelensky. A compromise could involve the Eastern Ukraine states with the large ethnic Russian population becoming autonomous, Nordstream 2 being approved and the sanctions being removed (Europe will need to eliminate its dependance on Russian gas.) Ukraine get a complete withdrawal of Russian forces, the areas lost during this incursion are returned, reparations from Russia for the damage caused and Ukraine get guarantees with regards to future sovereignty and the freedom to choose their own destiny.
I think the Russian elite will resolve Putin’s position. The successor will have a big job, but there is no reason why the “West” and Putin’s successor can’t have a better relationship and work together to rebuild the country, but the endemic corruption will have to be sorted out.

Comrade , Russia chose the path they wished to take , a more open freer society was promised not by the west but by their own and to some extent it did become one. The Russian Federation had multiple economic reforms, including privatisation and market and trade liberalisation because of collapse of communism, but Putin has slowly taken a grip on how its governed to the point we see today back to the "good old days" where any dissent is stamped upon and free speech tolerated to a point albeit a very small one . All the wests' fault of course
