| Energy Prices 06:56 - Feb 4 with 8967 views | jojaca | Mine is up for renewal, just browsing on the Martin Lewis website and the cheapest is £290 a month for fix rate, my jaw has hit the floor. My wages only went up up £20 a month last year and my gas and electric has basically doubled from around £140 a month. This will be proper rejig to finances just to make ends meet. | |

| Energy Prices on 09:05 - Feb 4 with 2879 views | majorraglan | It’s very concerning. My deal finished last April and I missed the chance to fix as was busy and had other priorities, when I had time to look at it around June /July it was on the way up and the advice was to stay on the Standard Variable and Martin Lewis advice has remained the same. I know there are global issues, but I also have a feeling that somewhere someone is making a lot of money and that we’re being taken advantage of, Shell’s profits just about quadrupled last year to £19.3bn. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes but that's not the way it comes across on the news, I'm amazed that people could use £149 per month on energy

It's swings and roundabouts for us. We use a lot more electricity because my wife is working from home, 3 days per week permanently. Our son is always on his Xbox, laptop or PC too, when he's home but after school he and his friends rarely go outdoors anymore. We are with Octopus and currently paying 161 per month but after replacing the back boiler with a combi we aren't using that much (about 130 I think) but we are letting the cash reserve build up for next winter. Even with leaving the combi on all day and night we aren't using as much gas as only having the back boiler on for 2 hours twice a day, and the house is warmer too. Our 2 year fixed rate deal runs until next June now. I'm hoping things change though we are OK financially, I went back to work just at the right time!

For once I’m in agreement with you. Almost every coal powered power station in the U.K. has closed, including Aberthaw near Barry. We are now reliant on importing energy form foreign countries, with all the risks that brings. Also the majority of nuclear power stations are set to close soon, and with projects like hinkley point years away from completion, leaves the U.K. population facing huge energy bills.

How about renewable energy from say …..a tidal lagoon ? Would cover Swanseas energy needs for 125 years. Tidy.

The current situation kind of puts paid to the idea it wasn't financially viable eh. I always took that to mean that nobody in government would make money from it so they didn't care about it, being in Wales and all. That's just a bit cynical I know. I wonder how many of our politicians have an interest in the overseas providers of our gas and electricity?

It should have been given the go ahead no doubt. What was the reason for cancelling the project ? Price of electricity to high 😂

Here's some of good principles of strategic planning. Look to diversify to avoid overdependence including single points of failure . Build in flexibility for the future to counter unpredictable factors. I think we can all see having a range of energy solutions where you can turn up supply in one area if another area becomes problematic makes sense.

Before we shut all coal powered power stations and with the ageing fleet of nuclear power stations, projects like Hinkley point c, Sizewell c, Wylfa should not only have been given the go ahead, but they should have been well under construction. Also the Swansea tidal lagoon, seven barrage should also have been under construction. What is being played out now is the lack of forward thinking, resulting in huge increase in energy bills.

Exactly. They compared a new industry to established energy industries. Mad. Once tidal matures it will get cheaper, as innovations come along. Plus its renewable. Dull bstards made the call.

Maybe there was forward thinking but more about mates making massive profits than keeping the prices stable for us plebs? They say a large part of this increase is because of global demand, that's always a rubbish reason to me. Pump more gas, make profit because you are selling more. Right now they are making more profit twice, increased prices AND selling more. it's a rip off and soe people are making billions out of it. Capitalism eh. Good for everybody, as long as you're rich. The poor can lump it.

Of course there were never floods, storms and extreme weather before Greta, more likely to be caused by Boris or Brexit.
