Decided to see first hand what the fuss is about.

Picked up a couple of 4 day passes. Anyone been? How is it as a spectator sport?

I suspect you've been drawn in by the "Drive to Survive" marketing.

Whilst obviously incredibly successful (especially in the USA, as intended), it really doesn't convey an accurate picture of the sport. Much of what you see is 'fake'. They invent drama that never happened, sometimes even editing in quotes from different timelines from different contexts to push a made up storyline they want to push.

The vast majority are fully aware what that series is all about, and most would agree it adds rather than detracts. Even proper petrol-heads have welcomed it (albeit grudgingly).

The Sky coverage is very good, but can learn a lesson or three from Netflix to spice it all up.

There's a clear gap in the market for a Netflix-esque drama during the F1 weekend. Which is on the cards, apparently...........

Anybody hear Horner's misogynistic nonense btw ?

The first season added. The second too, arguably. I (and my other long time Formula 1 friends) couldn't even make it through the first episode of the recent season.

Yes it adds in terms of bringing in new viewers and sponsors from the target countries (USA), however it's not an accurate representation of the sport.

Regarding Horner, he's desperate to see himself and his wife become some sort of UK "celebrity couple" (and he'll probably be successful in that goal thanks to the television series and Red Bull's likely dominance in this new era of cars.

It's not a competition between the 2 though, I enjoy both but they're very different (haven't seen the Moto GP yet but I've recorded it).
The sheer speed of F1 cars when you're at the circuit is incredible & even with all the technology I don't think TV conveys that.

True but it does involve excitement which is what all motor sport is about.
Bike racing is and always has been the underdog for public affection .

There is infinately more passing in Bikes and the Glitter/glamour/BS is far less at big Bike Meets.

There's way more passing in Moto 3 than in Moto GP, doesn't mean it's more exciting though. Passing is always going to be easier with bikes.
F1 is a special case even in car racing as far as BS goes. You don't get it in Le Mans type sports prototypes or top level touring cars.

Some mildly entertaining posts since I’ve been away I must say. I’m away at the moment and have been since Friday, as I informed the ownership at the time.

I’ve had some texts saying some are considering stopping posting as they thought I had been banned, so it’s probably important to say I haven’t been, I’m simply away for a little while.

According to the owners here, there has apparently been an issue with the username itself during that time during a general site clean up and have no reason to disbelieve that - but I’m not banned, of course I’m not.

Out of courtesy, I have asked about the view of my contribution and the responses have only been positive.

I have a duty to keep that sense of balance on here ;) but even I need a holiday every now and again.

Didn’t bother going today, but am there there next 3 days. Formula One pictures to come on this F1 thread those who have asked. Let’s see if we can have a nice environment with no personal attacks from here on in.

If people wish to disagree then do so respectfully, if people can’t do it respectfully then ignore and move on to the next is something I’ve seen a few say this week, and entirely agree.

Onwards and upwards.

Enjoy all.

Glorious morning here, race fans.

Ferrari been impressive over the last two days.

To those who suggested the V8 Supercars, excellent suggestion. Quite incredible.

Van Gisbergen went from 23rd start to 3rd, stunning drive.

Fences all round the track, and with 330kmh speed, photos don’t really come out too well of the cars themselves.

Fair play that looks stunning, think my lad has planned to wake early to watch the race, he's a massive F1 and Hamilton fan, who unfortunately seems to be behind the curve ball these days, with Mercedes not coming to terms with the seasons new regs/rules.

Yes they look very poor, not sure what exactly it is that is holding the Mercedes back this season as don’t really follow it.

AC is pretty clued up on it and may be able to explain exactly why. But they aren’t happy in the various interviews given so far.

Ferrari drivers also not happy at the bouncing they are suffering. It’s very noticeable here, looks bizarre.

Completely different aerodynamic rules this year which are intended to increase overtaking in F1.
Instead of flat underbodies they're sculpted to generate downforce (ground effect). The bouncing (porpoising) wasn't encountered until the first test just before the season started & the teams haven't really had a chance to eliminate it yet. They can get rid of it by raising the ride hight but then the car is just slow so it's a balance.
The Mercs have also been more affected by the switch to E10 fuel than the other engine manufacturers.
They'll improve no doubt just a question of how long it takes them.

Well done the GBGBGBGB drivers today, fair play against all odds.

Thrilling to get Lewis back in the frame, particularly at the expense of Vershhhhhhhttappen today. Some proper karma moments still to come on that front.

Excellent GP venue hosted by the Oz.

Excellent footage from of our very own Dr_P roving reporter live down under, fair play.

Cracking photo's Thanks for posting,

I know its been noted before, but you could see the difference in power between Red Bull and Mercedes, Lewis was right behind Perez throughout the safety car laps, I know that was to be expected of course, but he was in prime position to skip past Perez when the race resumed, but Lewis couldn't get near him and the gap quickly lengthened, Mercedes need to sort the problems with their power chain and quickly.

On a better note, it was great to see Verstappen breakdown and having to retire and then seeing the look on Horners chops, priceless

No problem.

I was surprised how engaging a sport it is.

The drivers are treated as rock stars, more adulation than most sports people. Similar to Messi, Ronaldo etc they are treated like Gods, quite bizarre but shows the importance of this sport to so many.

The whole event is excellent and recommend it to anyone. The speeds are just shocking, not as loud as I initially thought it would be though.

The other half has the F1 bug now and already looking at where we could go next. Potentially the US in October.

I was extremely impressed with Ferrari, looked to be the superior car throughout the 3 days I was there.

Horner's chops are beyond chopsy and he will absolutely get his comeuppance.

Like all chopsy types eventually do. Here, there and everywhere.

95% + of the hardcore F1 community is vying for that moment.

Cheers, plenty more but won’t bore anyone with them.

Yes was a great few days, I’d recommend the build up too. Qualifiers were almost as good as the main event which turned out to be a pretty easy win. The qualifiers were dramatic though with pole position changing hands a few times in the last few minutes.

The bad thing about Australia is the extreme heat, while the temperature may not be too high on the scale - it feels twice as hot because the sun doesn’t have the same atmospheric protection as other parts of the world. So standing/sitting around with little shade for 8 hours a day was certainly a challenge at times.

Plus if I don’t have covid now after mingling with 350,000 people over the course of the 3 days then I never will!

They must make an absolute fortune there too. As I touched upon likening it to a really partisan sport, almost everyone has some sort of gear on. From McLaren shirts to Mercedes hats, I’d say 90% have gear on, men, women and children.

I’d love to know how much they make from merchandise in one event, must be in the millions.

They pay their drivers multiple fortunes, so merchandise sales help to that end, the money in the F1 must be off the scale though, its incredible.

Went to practise days at Brands Hatch and Silverstone back in the dim and distant, but never the actual race day, some of the Wife's brothers [covid apart] go every year religiously and slum it by living in a tent for the weekend, my Lad would love to go and I've offered to take him, but he'd never slum it all weekend in a tent, he's 29 in a couple of months and loves is home comforts

If you got a website with them on please post it.

I prefer the qualifying in many of the GP' weekends (Monaco) great crescendo in jeopardy for the drivers. The F1 fans are massive into their merch, I had one or 2 pieces in years gone by but I only got the old clearance stock as its too much. Anyone wanna b1tch about footy merch have a google at F1 gear.

You've convinced me, I'll have to get the mrs round to the idea and go for it!

Definitely a whole weekend event & not just raceday.
Back in the mid 80's the merchandising stalls were mostly independent with all sorts of decent unofficial stuff but that's all been stopped unfortunately - everything's officially licensed & mega expensive these days.

F1 turning up for a night race along the Las Vegas strip in November 2023 - should be a spectacle.

The new 14-turn track will run for 3.8 miles, with top speeds expected to hit around 212mph.
