Can it really have been forty years?? 14:18 - Mar 31 with 1480 viewsLohengrin

In just a few days, 2nd April, will mark the fortieth anniversary of the start of the Falklands Conflict.

Can it really have been forty years? It’s all gone by in the blink of an eye.

Very interesting documentary on Channel 4 last Sunday night. Learnt a great deal more about the conflict. Apparently we came close to losing it.

Close maybe but not close enough. A magnificent achievement to expel a larger invasion force and to mount an operation from over 8,000 miles away

I’ll have to try and catch that, thanks. It was, as you say, a close call. Some horrifying mistakes were made whether through inexperience or incompetence, probably both. The loss of the Atlantic Conveyor and all the supplies she carried could have cost us dearly had it dragged on a few weeks longer.

Still, the sheer will to endure by the boys on the ground, and at sea, was astonishing.

Remember it as if it was yesterday. We had then and still now have one of the best fighting forces in the world and we sent the best of the best, something the Falklanders islanders were then and now eternally grateful for.

They were planted British people.

A massive failure of international diplomacy that so many young men should die or be badly injured.
One death is one too many.

The Argentinian people are our friends, not to mention Patagonia blood links to Wales.
The Argentinian government were the enemy.
Their troops were conscripted.

Less than 3,000 people live on the Falklands.
17,000 live in Morriston.

Yes they were grateful at the time, of course.

The fact we sailed there from the Uk, on cruise ships etc. Updated the Argentinians ( news reports ) every day where we were and how long we were away. I think it was possibly one of the major victories in warfare in the twentieth century.

That aside, even if the Argentinians had won, they would have folded under the gorilla tactics employed by the chaps from Hereford.

Supply lines were certainly stretched and that's an understatement but we prevailed , something which is often forgotten is the other victory which was the people of Argentina, by losing the war led directly to the downfall of the murderous military dictatorship of Argentina., is not appreciated nowadays by many Argentinians, especially those in government who seem to want to repeat the same mistakes.

Yes, fantastic to not invest enough in our service men and women, whilst instead investing billions on a weapon we will never use.

Brilliant.

As history has unfolded, The Falkands is a British island/territory. Aregentina has become a nation in the same way as other American land masses. Argentina is totally hypocritical with any claim over the islands. Just because it is a few hundred miles of its coast doesn't mean anything apart from that is where it is.
