I agree with you entirely. the thing about good comedy is it needs to be allowed to comment on anything and everything...as long as it's funny and not meant to offend.
The thing there is, Christians (in the UK at least) rarely complain when they are the butt of jokes but take the mick out of Islam and you can get a very different reaction.
Some people like offensive comedians, personally I think they had their day. Frankie Boyle for example, his brand is past it's sell by date. Didn't he get hooked by a tv station and has since toned his material down?
Dave Allen was brilliant and I think his act would still stand up today. | | | |

Chubby Brown does it in a vulgar fashion. He is mocking something he knows little about. Dave Allen on the other hand was a Catholic and knows exactly how to do it right. | |

My mother was Irish Catholic and staunch.
However she loved Dave Allen and thought he was brilliant.
She hated Ian Paisley ( obviously) but still found DA's joke about Paisley's " Gnashing of teeth on judgement day" ( "For those without, teeth will be provided"  ) brilliant. |  |

Lenny Henry has to be right up there. Never even raised a titter with anyone. The bald bloke from mock the week is atrocious too. Miranda obviously. And the double act of Sara pascoe and Katherine Ryan who can be found on literally every show. |
Totally agree about LH came on the scene in the 1970's joking about black people saying and doing trible screams and shouting "Uuuuganda my friend" then doing uuuuah uuuuuah and tarzan shouts dressed in a leopard skin whilst kissing Jim Davidsons butt.
