Wimbledon drizzle on 18:19 - Jun 27 with 1047 views | Tummer_from_Texas | How common are grass courts in the UK? I've played since I was 11 years old, and I've never even seen one in person. 99.99% of them in Texas are hard courts, with the rare clay court (green, not red) in a few places.

Not very common. You can find them but usually part of a club where membership is a decent amount. Upkeep isn’t cheap. England, Holland and Germany would be the main three countries to find grass courts. America, Australia and U.K. you will mostly find hard courts. Certain parts of Europe like Spain, Portugal, Italy and also South America will often be clay.

You have to be able to prove your lineage descends from Edward II to be even considered membership in half these places. Very snobby sport.

Not so. Both my kid were members of our local club in Hoylake. Nothing nobby at all although no riff raff ,which for some means it's snobby. I can actually think of worse things than being called snobby. Ive been called it many times including my Swansea cousins who are all over the city.

Wimbledon drizzle on 10:27 - Jun 28 with 926 views | Togg | A three year adult plus member in Swansea Tennis and Squash club, you will pay about £300 for 12 month membership...which is great value. First year is about £120.00. This is cheaper for kids. You also get use of Squash and Tennis facilities. Don't forget there are free public courts. You can buy an entry level racquet ( which are now great quality) , basic trainers and balls from Sports Direct. The club tends to be full of hard working people with a mixture of professions and other occupations. There is also a good splattering of retirees . If you came to the bar you will soon find out it's not snobby! I know two of the coaches at the Tennis Centre in Morfa do a lot to help raise funds to help kids play from poorer backgrounds. What some of the club's are like in the richer Home County areas I have no idea about.

Sounds very reasonable to me. We lived in Oxfordshire for a while and the local tennis club used to offer children a pay and play rate of 50p per hour per court during the week, my kids used to stop off after school and play doubles. [Post edited 28 Jun 2022 11:13]

Wimbledon drizzle on 16:45 - Jun 28 with 780 views | Togg | Similar to Swansea Jim but still amazing value. Try to play about 3 times a week. So if you divide that into the fee...its pretty damn cheap. I don't play Golf, so no idea what membership fees.... in say Fairwood or Langland are? Also, the physical and mental well being just can't be under estimated. Plus the new friendships and social side.

Don't know of any grass courts in Wales but not really researched it. I've played down in Exmouth, Devon on grass. We tend to have hard court ( lovely high bounces, especially if you have bags of topspin) . Astro turf and artificial clay, which is my favourite. The clay tends to be better on the limbs, especially if you are a more mature player.

Newport, Bridgend, Llanelli clubs used to have them at one time, not sure if they have them anymore. Seen grass courts in Newport Rhode Island, I guess they are still there due to the international hall of fame. [Post edited 2 Jul 2022 14:20]
