| UK versus Wales, the pay rise debate 18:51 - Jul 19 with 1505 views | Catullus | Ok, in England there has been a recommendation for pay rises between 4-9% for NHS staff apparently. The Senedd is saying they can't afford that, they haven't got the funding. Where are they getting the funding from to increase their own number by over 50%, where is the money coming from for this speed limit change that not many outside Cardiff bay seem to want? I won't argue that Westminster will need to increase the Welsh subsidy because there are other public sector pay rises coming but the Senedd always seems to find money for new things seemingly only they want, or at least very few outside the Senedd want. Inflation is at 9.5% now, it looks like we may be entering a wages/inflation spiral that could cause massive problems, massive even to those we see now. Inflation driving wage rises, in turn wage rises driving inflation. | |

Yep. Teacher pay increases have been agreed on a sliding scale from 5 - 8.9% - all to be found through existing budgets. It’ll mean cuts that’ll almost certainly include job losses.

They probably don't, maybe they should use that same approach when their next pay rise is due. Here's a thought, if we are having a 50% rise in Senedd members maybe they should take the existing budget and divide it by the new number of MS's? After all with all these new members they'll all have less work to do.

| UK versus Wales, the pay rise debate on 21:01 - Jul 19 with 1394 views | majorraglan | I totally agree with you about the number of AM’s, it shouldn’t be increased, but the costs of 30 odd new AM’s (which I’m dead against) is relatively small compared to the cost the NHS pay rise will cost. If I were Drakers, I’d pull the speed limit change and the I ncrease in AM’s. There are around 78,000 working in the NHS, the pay rise is going to cost a lot f money and f it has to come out of existing budgets services are going to be severely affected. On top of this, hospitals will be picking up the additional energy costs etc, - services are going to get worse, a lot worse. Edit- clarify matter. [Post edited 19 Jul 2022 21:22]

The extra Senedd members are going to cost about £12M a year, a fair amount. So cancel it. Cancel the speed restrictions and there is a chunk of the money. If the workers get a pay increase providing they pay tax and NI about 30% will go back to the government anyway. Hand this over to contribute to the pay increase. To simplistic or am I missing something.

Too many vanity projects, airport, farm, Senedd members, free prescriptions to higher tax payers, 20 mph limit etc. They all add up.

| UK versus Wales, the pay rise debate on 22:23 - Jul 19 with 1316 views | BryanSwan | Wage rises don't always equal inflation. Most wages have been pretty stagnant for years, its those at the top that are keeping on increasing the prices and stealing the profits. Funding a possible 9% pay rise without job losses is going to be impossible. Pay rise - Job cuts - worse service. Nice way to help drive up the Private healthcare market. | |

And free parking at hospitals (which I agree with) also costs? I'd happily give the lower paid NHS staff 10%, and I'd give the rest over 5% too but its all a political game, sadly involving peoples lives. And we don't want anymore AM's

| UK versus Wales, the pay rise debate on 04:35 - Jul 20 with 1239 views | Kilkennyjack | The uk government Tory Brexit has cost the uk economy twice as much as the pandemic. Thats by the governments own figures. Thats why the senedd is not getting the funding it needs. Likewise the HS2 robbery of Cymru. The Crown Estates robbery of Cymru. Who paid for Johnsons Chequers party, or his cosplay RAF photoshoot ? Tory economic policy in Westminster has delivered this damaging inflation. As Prof Drakers keeps repeating the uk only survives with immediate and serious reform. | |

It actually does cost. Singleton Hospital entrance is manned by a couple of stewards and you are checked for your reason for entering. Pay and display could be automated. Not that I am against the free parking.

I'm not a victim or inferior, it doesn't affect me, call it whatever you like, but this assembly has been a disaster for Wales. And they want a load more to join the gravy train

| UK versus Wales, the pay rise debate on 09:34 - Jul 20 with 1115 views | gadgetuk | I agree that the assembly needs to have a major overhaul, but I don't believe it should be scrapped. The issues we have with the senedd are exactly the same as we have with westminster - a perception that the money gets spent within its immediate vicinity (Substitute South East for Cardiff) or on pet projects that only serve the capital (HS2 will ultimately allow more people to commute from further away to London). We need the senedd to work for the whole of Wales which means improving transport links, shifting civil service jobs across the country etc and actually listening to what the country wants. Personally I would prefer to see Plaid in charge (and I'm saying that as a labour supporter). The last thing I want is the senedd to be scrapped. Westminster is not our friend. | | | |

Spot on here. % pay rises are a con, 5% of 20k is 1k whereas 5% of 80k is 4k. The gulf between rich and poor keeps on increasing. Performance based pay rises where possible would be much better. I'd begrudge getting the same pay rises as colleagues who dont pull their weight.

| UK versus Wales, the pay rise debate on 11:58 - Jul 20 with 1057 views | gadgetuk | Another way to approach it would be like we do with income tax levels. For those on 20% tax, pay rise is 5%, for those on 40% bracket, 3% and those on 45%, 1%. Pretty easy to implement I would have thought. | | | |

The UK government shared money from UK taxed across the whole of the UK. Of course Wales , Scotland and NI get extra subsidies over and above the tax they raise. This is one of the advantages of being part of a prosperous UK.

The unfunded public sector pay rises anounced yesterday will strip £7 billion out of services.
