| World cup kick off times 21:44 - Nov 20 with 5498 views | trampie | How come Wales are going to play Iran out in the Middle East at just after 1pm local time and England get to play later in the day at teatime (4 pm). What is going on, is this just luck of the draw, scheduling and draws always seem to go England's way, perhaps it's just a coincidence, strange or what ? | |

I believe in fair play, you don't tend to see the big nations treated like the little ones.

| World cup kick off times on 13:32 - Nov 25 with 650 views | Tummer_from_Texas | Related to your question: today (Black Friday) is a holiday for most Americans. And USA v England is getting more hype over here than any football match I can ever remember. Sounds like a lot of non football fans will be tuning in for the first time. Our match today (tonight for you) is at 2 pm on the East Coast/11 am on the West Coast. Wales/Iran was at 5 am East Coast/2 am West Coast. If we had switched places with Wales/Iran, it would have cost them 10s of millions of American viewers. So it's safe to say that had something to do with the scheduling. | |

It's cheating for the big teams and countries, it tends to be the smaller teams that have to play in the middle of the day in the desert. I remember a Russian player failing a drugs test against Wales in a play off either to make the Euros or World cup and Russia was not kicked out, it was suggested by some because of viewing figures and sponsors. I've no doubt it's for commercial reasons that Wales had to play in the midday sun and not England, Germany, France etc but it's not fair, it's not sporting integrity. As it turns out it probably made no difference on this occasion but it could, it was a disadvantage for Wales and an advantage to other teams in the group.

Genuine question then, how are the fixtures decided? Is it literally a random number generator - style thing or is there any thought put into it in terms of what is happening in that country, etc...i.e., is there any human interaction with it?

Just accept the fact the fixture timings are down to get the biggest TV audience, to satisfy the sponsors, as always football is all about money.
| World cup kick off times on 16:47 - Nov 25 with 566 views | Catullus | Reading the OP this was never about smaller teams being treated worse than bigger teams, this was an imagied plot against Wales that favours England. It's typical of this poster, later on in the thread the "opinion" was changed to try and avoid the obvious comments (though they'd already happened) that the Op is xenophobc towards England. The act is, always has been, bigger teams do get preferential treatment. Whether it's locally, nationally or internationally the bigger teams always get more consideration. It's not right, it's not fair but that's the way it is. To somehow suggest that FIFA have deliberately done Wales down to favour England is bizarre at best. Somebdy had to play at this time, the worst time of day and other countries are doing it too, not just us. | |

What do you think helps to pay the £9,000 a day our club is getting for each player at the World Cup. Sponsorship/TV money dictates, be it World cup, Premier League or in our case EFL. We just have to accept it. USA v England is a far bigger draw and needs to be shown at a time to get the best value in the relevant countries and worldwide. How can you compare it to Wales v Iran.
