It’s coming right on the pitch - but what the hell is going on off it ? 23rd Apr 2023 21:52
As the Swans prove their competence at last on the pitch with their sixth win in seven on the weekend, a well timed mention of things away from the field of play has been made by Russell Martin. News reached us on Sunday afternoon that plans for the closed season that were agreed in February seem now to have been ‘adjusted’ leaving Martin extremely annoyed. 2

Jason Levien is scuppering any hopes of a good summer, click above.

We will never know, no real definitive answer on that one.

Either way was a roll of a dice but the place was flat and needed some fresh faces in my opinion.

Why was it flat though? Look at our squad, it’s fantastic.

The answer to that of course is because Martin castigated many of them and then created a cloud for the club in January which really stopped us from getting out of a slump we shouldn’t have been in anyway.

Mistakes made in January throughout the club, nobody denies that. However those came from the footballing side of the club too that had a direct impact on not getting players in. To blame the owners would be incorrect, Martin is burning bridges weekly.

How he thinks his nonsense is going to do anything but being more negativity to the club I’m not quite sure, however in his mind - as long as the focus is on someone else he’s happy to stand by and watch things burn.

He’s a very damaging manager, more than any other I can think that we have had - incredible for someone who is still yet to have a good managerial season to his name.

Was January so bad, we knew we needed a few additions but they had to be the right personnel, some would have taken anyone just to make them feel like we were progressing, by luck or by judgement, the club held out and believed in the talent we already had in the squad.
If one or two go this summer, I'd expect to see incoming too but I'd also like to think our youngsters will get a shot too.

If we'd brought in th players martin wanted in January, where might we be now. We are unfeasibly close to the play offs after a run of 4 wins in 22. If the owners had brought in the 3-4 players we obviousy needed maybe wed be having a tilt at promotion via the play offs?

I'm still not a great Martin fan but if he'd had some help we may be doing much better.

If he was getting the best out of what he had available to him and it still wasn't good enough then I would understand this level of anger about our lack of movement in the market. Fact is he wasn't. Not by a long shot.

Furthermore, there was a very real chance IMO that if we'd backed him heavily in January then he would have only become more entrenched in his ways. We still wouldn't have gone up because his system doesn't work and we'd have wasted money needlessly.

He had to be made to learn. He had to be made to adapt.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

You think bringing in Grant would have got us into the playoffs? I’d suggest if that ludicrous attempt to sign a player from Russ and his team went through that would have us closer to relegation than the playoffs.

Bringing in players sounds wonderful. Not as straight forward as it sounds however, especially when the manager has the team down the bottom of the league and suggests players that many clubs want. Why would they come here? Players wouldn’t even come that were offered more money.

That is the reality of January.

" he had to be made to learn"
Does that mean that January's fiasco was intentional to teach him a lesson?

Of course not. But that was what he had to do.

By bringing in more players it was only enabling his failing methods and no doubt we would still be doing what we were doing before, just with different chess pieces.

We were a couple of injuries away to key personnel to have had a torrid run in to the end of the season. We got lucky.

I’ve been told that the Swans had the capital but Levien wasn’t flexible to the previous agreement to getting players in. That may well be him not trusting Martin, but the final say I understood stays with Kaplan on a split decision. So, yes maybe Levien didn’t want to spend when others did. If that’s the case he should have said so.

Mind you if it wasn’t for him Cooper would have extended his contract, but that’s another story soon to come.

Definitely not the case.

Each case was different, but funds wasn’t the issue for any of them. Levien is a former player agent, he is excellent in negotiating deals. The players either didn’t want to come for various personal reasons and/or the club didn’t want to sell.

As for the upcoming window, Martin needs to understand that our financial position isn’t crystal clear at the moment, investments are not yet concluded. Without knowing where we will stand there can be no firm plans. That’s just the way it is.

Instead of intentionally setting off a bomb every other presser, he needs to start thinking about the club and what harm he is doing by making these comments rather than just about himself and what he wants. Swansea City FC will never be Russell Martin FC, club comes first regardless of what he wants.

I have no doubt we will have an excellent summer transfer window, but he won’t get everything his own way. Nor should he.

But the agreed options were blocked. If not then what happened ?

Every case was different.

Some that were linked never wanted to come (Gelhardt), others wanted to come but changed their minds (Ogbene), some we chased for far too long after us being told by the football part of the club that he was interested; who when it came to it didn’t have any intentions of coming (Drameh), some who wouldn’t come for personal reasons, some the other club put the stop on (Grant) and some simply chose other higher placed clubs (Thomas).

That’s the long and the short of January, no blocking from Levien. Some things to improve on which they will, but this latest bomb set off by Russell is simply down to his lack of understanding of the club and its position while trying to absolve himself for any future issues that we may have.

Until the investments and signed and sealed, no firm framework can be drawn up. He knows this.

I just can't read that without thinking of a husband putting his Mrs to right because she served his dinner up to him cold!!

Not right at all.

I certainly think it could have been delivered better or another example.........and I'm not talking about the cold dinner 🙈

He’s brought in 44 players prior to January in his managerial career, what makes you think January would be any different in terms of equating to an upturn of form?

As we have seen, we have the squad capable to compete at the top of this league regardless of who was (or wasn’t) brought in. It’s just a squad that wasn’t used correctly.

I think he's been watching too much Tenko.
Re Martin, he's a young manager, there will be ups and downs during his career, he'll have a lot to learn along the away, look at Lampard, Gerrard, G neville, and probably more I haven't mentioned, thought they could go into top flight management because they've played at the top level, under top managers, top managers with a blank cheque book, no shame in making mistakes, as long as lessons are learnt I'm fine with that.
As for playing out from the back, even though it's not as much, we still do it, some of our more recent goals have come from doing just that, I think the big difference is we are now willing to put the ball out for a throw-in, or, clear the ball upfield, we also pass the ball quicker depending on the opposition tactics, the last handful of games were against teams that needed some sort of result, and apart from Huddersfield, tried pressing us leaving gaps for us to exploit.
I've also read criticism for the games we've recently won, one being, and this is a cracker, that was a game we were expected to win because " enter name here " they are in the relegation battle, bottom half of the league, Arsenal proved that not to be the case last Friday, when they came back to draw 3 all against the team rooted to the bottom of the EPL, but, hey ho, that's football for you.

That’s not criticism, that’s just a fact isn’t it?

Nobody is saying it’s impossible to not win those games, but teams like Arsenal will be expected to beat Southampton, just like we should be expected to beat Wigan.

Martin is a young manager has been a football league manager the same time as our previous manager Cooper who unlike Martin never played at pro level
Cooper who entered football league management at the same time as Martin in his first season took his team to the championship playoff semifinals Martin took his side to 19th in lg1
in their second seasons Martin took his side to 13th in lg1 whilst Cooper led his side to the Champuoship play off final losing
in their theirs seasons as managers Cooper took a side from bottom of the champuoship to win the play off final and promotion to the premier league whilst Martin took a team that the season before had finished 4th in the championship to 15th in their 4the seasons Cooper has managed in the PL but looks like his side will be relegated whilst Martin again will achieve zilch

Martin is doing well at the moment, as in the last 5 weeks or so.

But that’s a tiny fraction of his tenure. Continue this form up to Xmas and then we can revisit. Looking at the scope of the 2 seasons he’s been here - which is what we must do of course - it’s been underwhelming.

‘Potentially’ now on the right track, but who knows. He may be back to 3 at the back and central possession come next season and history begins to repeat.

This is now very much a watching brief with the ball firmly in his court.

What I do know however is the owners will give all the support they can; as long as it is for the benefit of Swansea as a club regardless of what the manager demands, wants or protests about.

Club first, always.

There was no failing, just expected losses against Brentford both times, who finished above us both times and largely had our number in the previous meetings.

If Russ gets us to the playoffs by some miracle this season and we play Boro in the final, he won’t have failed if we lose.

We would probably be 3/1 underdog, I would expect us to lose.
