To top that off we've still got the mooted tourist tax to come. Is there anything in this country that they can't screw up?

| Welsh Tourism on 21:29 - Aug 18 by bennytheblue | Yeah speak to them all the time, I’m selling a place down there at the moment. In fact, I’ve had wealthy old English people show up at my door, tell me how much they love the house, how it would cost a million in Dorset or Cornwall, but they can’t move here because the welsh nhs is so bad, and withybush a shocker. I told them about that tiny place I’m bsncyfelin, I checked it out for future ref, they barely do anything there. You can book it but it won’t happen there. A mate I know runs an auction house based out west, it’s dying on its arse…reckons drakefords policy’s have knocked 10/20% off value in 12 months as second home owners sell up. I’m sure the locals will all have a house to own soon, just no work, cafes or pubs to go to, as they will all be closing without tourist dollar. |
Why would you view a house that you can't move to.

It is small, but they do offer a variety of treatments including surgery at the hospital. My MIL had her knee replacement there.

Tell me about it, I happened to be there with the wife n kids so said I’d do the viewing. They drove all the way from Berkshire, we spent two days cleaning the house, first thing they said after hello was sorry but we can’t move to Pembrokeshire….I might have chinned the txxt there and then if he wasn’t about 75! Said he didn’t want to let us down with the viewing and fancied a drive anyway. Mental

| Welsh Tourism on 17:49 - Aug 17 by SullutaCreturned | The part you are not getting about this is, the people moving here are largely English retirees, those putting further strain on our NHS, those driving up house prices meaning our young cannot afford to remain within their birth area. Overall people are leaving Wales, the young are going because they cannot get up the ladder here. We are becoming an English retirement village. It's called a managed decline. We'll have an ageing population that increases whilst the young people leave meaning there'll be nobody to look after the ageing population. Social care will suffer even more, the NHS won't be able to recruit. A coutry needs its young and ours are being driven away.It might be alright if we had plenty of immigrants to replace our young but most of them want to stay in England. 39% go to London and those who come to Wales tend to be those waiting on a decision and can they even take a job? https://migrationobservatory.o |
I wonder if you learnt that on here, what poster was on here years ago saying older English retirees are a drain on Welsh NHS and services and pushing house prices up making them unaffordable for younger local people (no offence to English retirees of course) oh yes it was me and I received flak off the likes of you if I recall and now you are pointing out what I pointed out a long time ago, good that you have learnt something.

| Welsh Tourism on 19:20 - Aug 17 by Gwyn737 | I’ve lost 3 teachers in the last 18 months who’ve gone abroad, one to Canada, one to Australia and one to Dubai. These countries are aggressively chasing staff, offering much more in regards to pay, conditions and lifestyle to what they get here. There are also fantastic tax breaks in some of these countries and with uk house prices, young staff are moving to save deposit money. Unfortunately they don’t always come back to the job. |
If they don't want to work here let them go, we shouldn't be blackmailed into giving more money to relatively well paid jobs when there are lots on minimum wage and benefits.

It's the same in Devon and Cornwall. Cornwalls property prices far out strip Wales. Yes the locals can't afford to buy. Hence they need to build social or affordable housing. The people who move to these areas are normally fairly wealthy, have disposable income and spend it in the locality. These people spend and have paid their taxes. Very much like holiday makers they create employment. [Post edited 23 Aug 2023 20:08]

It destroys areas that have always been centres of welsh culture and the welsh language. You cannot allow market forces to act without controls. Elderly English immigrants inevitably will place strain on the welsh nhs. Older people need more care. UK government should take actions to support that sort of weird demographic. Villages in north wales can be empty 8 months of the year due to second homes. Kills local businesses and local schools etc. Tax them until the pips squeak.

You are not immigrants if you are UK citizens freely moving within your own country spending money and providing jobs and wealth in areas they visit. Funny how you were so happy to allows "immigrants " from the EU to travel freely to Wales and place strains on the NHS with free treatment.

They have every right to move where they want to as free UK citizens. Tax is never the answer. How many UK residents have moved out to Spain taking their wealth and spending it in another country. Or move to Canada or Australia.

Immigrants move from country to another . Problem is some do nit accept t they live in Great Britain and Wales is constitionally part of England . They have not ripped up the Union with England and won’t About time is was accepted Finally nothing at all in a derelict cottage to provide an income for indigenous Gogs . They live off tourism and visitors however infrequent they visit . Kick them out and villages will be wiped away . Who do you think the Zip Line in Bethesda is for ? V,locals don’t use it,they just work there. Who visits slate mmuseums ? Not locals either

Many Welsh people also retire to other parts of Wales. There is a good few who also retire to South Devon. Also if were still part of the EU any Schengen citizen would have a legal right to live in any part of Wales. [Post edited 26 Aug 2023 10:30]

Wales voted to leave didn’t it ! Mind you, it bears out what is being said, viz visitors not welcome . And they are not Professional welsh lovers will deny this and abuse anyone suggesting such heresy but ,looking into the soul, they know this is the case . We must be amongst the most hypocritical of all to advertise for people to come to Wales then Chuck all manner of rocks their way . No welsh estate agent not any builders merchant,or any local tradesman is going to turn down revenue from anyone “ foreign” .

You seem to miss the point. The point is that a disproportionate percentage of older people puts additional strain on the NHS. Thats just a fact. Older people need more health care. Cymru is not a theme park. Tourism needs to sustainable and needs to benefit Wales. The current model does neither of those things.

Well if i do then i am glad we have Nye Bevan’s NHS to rely on. Staffed by marvellous professionals from all over the world. And i am glad its there for you and your family as well. The Tory party wants to privatise it so their mates can make money. Imagine thinking like that. GTTO. [Post edited 26 Aug 2023 11:30]

Essays never saved anyone. I was good at them myself . It’s fact me or mucker. Sustainability is when a chum of mine buys a run down cottage on Llyn, and uses local brick ids, roofers, plumbers, sparks ,structural engineers to rebuild so that people can ,as they do,stay there and buy provisions from local shops . These people tend not to be the drain on NHS that illegal migrants are . When one camps in Trawsfynydd, one uses local businesses . Another chum owns this He is chockerblock with foreigners . The local pub closed because local people couldn’t support it . Think on https://www.google.co.uk/searc

I agree with much of what you’ve said, there is definitely an impact on the Welsh language and culture, but equally some of the people moving in to Wales make the effort to integrate and learn Welsh. Immigrants of all nationality place an additional strain on the NHS because we aren’t increasing the spending to proportionality cater for the additional demand. The elderly do have a much greater impact on the NHS budget, it’s huge additional cost and the more elderly in an area the more of the budget is eaten up, however, by enlarge we are talking about people who’ve worked and contributed by paying taxes all their lives and it’s not their fault the Barnett settlement doesn’t fully acknowledge the impact. Villages in North Wales can by empty most of the year, but tourism does bring benefits. It’s about getting the correct balance.

Villages in north Wales have very little in the way of facilities ,jobs or infra structure . Try surviving without private transport . Plenty of air bnbs . We ve stayed in them ourselves. When they ,we shop at the local stores ,such that they are. They are not exactly that welcoming in comparison with Yorkshire,Norfolk ,Northumberland and the Wolds, other places that have loads of villages with tourists . They will spend the money unlike camper vans who’d rather brew a cup of tea in a glorified tin can. Is rather them target RV owners frankly as they rarely spend much locally, often popping in for the day then shooting off

If it was an equal ‘ebb and flow’ of retired folk then there would be no issue. But thats not whats happening. The welsh demographic is being skewed due to large numbers of elderly English migrants. That means its one way. A net influx into Wales. So it costs Wales more to look after them. Yes they have paid in, but Westminster is not allocating extra funds to Wales to pick up the tab. They also skewed the welsh Brexit vote. Being Boris’s Little Englanders.

Here's a fact written in blood, very many Welsh people have fought and died in support of this union.
