| Junior Doctors strike 08:49 - Aug 11 with 5869 views | raynor94 | Just watching breakfast TV, and they showed a junior doctor's pay slip. After 6 years of training he's on £14 an hour £2100 a month take home, truly shocking. No wonder there are so many moving to Australia and NZ. | |

Dichotomy alright . We wouldn’t pay Scandinavian tax rates for full social care no matter what anyone says . |
There are other example rather than Scandinavian ones that work perfectly well

The government have accepted in full the recommendations of the independent doctors pay review body which recommended a pay increase of between 8.1% and 10.3% for junior doctors. Inflation figures today show inflation is 6.8% . No doubt all the posters on this site will br more than happy to pay the extra income tax to fund the ridiculous 35% their left wing union wants.

But the process is flawed and the so called independent pay review body is far from being completely independent. The government send the pay review bodies remit letters which set arbitrary parameters or limits to pay recommendations before any review commences, so it’s hardly independent. In the cases of doctors, teachers etc they have the right to strike. The police on the other hand of no rights, so if they get a crap pay rise imposed on them it’s tough, they can’t strike and just have to grin a bear it. On one occasion the government actually ignored the independent police pay review body’s recommendation and decided to pay them less than what had been recommended. Shocking. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Depends if you want doctors, doesn’t Hold back pay and they’ll continue to go overseas and we’ll lose the initial investment and experience. Fortunately we have managed to recruit more doctors (and thankfully more police). They’re probably included in the Tufton Street 100k you were discussed by. Great news yesterday for the private sector yesterday with wage inflation at a 20+ year high. Mate paying for decent public services won’t be so difficult.

Yet when the "indepepndent" pay review body says politicians should get X amount the government nor the opposition weren't saying we couldn't afford it. Some MP's did to be fair. When there aren't enough medically trained personnel to prvide an adequate service it's us plebs who suffer. The politicians don't suffer because they can afford to go privately and if an ambulance is called to Rishis Sunak I guarantee he won't wait 6 hours, laying on the floor in his own urine and blood because he's a VIP. Annie down the road though, her urine will have dried and her blood congealed long before another ambulance gets to her after hers was redirected. Her famiy will be left wondering why her ambulance was only 2 minutes away but never showed up as she bled out at the roadside.

Don't let them hold the country to ransom, not all that work in the NHS are angels as we have seen with that nurse in the news this week. [Post edited 23 Aug 2023 15:25]

I wonder where it all goes. I would happily pay more tax if it meant the services would be of a good standard and reliable. As it stands you can phone the police- no officers available. Phone an ambulance - it’s a ten hour wait. You can drive to the hospital instead but the roads will be gridlocked and your car will be smashed to pieces by all the pot holes anyway. They’re cutting all the buses and trains so public transport isn’t a reliable option. Once you get to the hospital there’s probably no beds so they’ll shove you on a trolley in some corridor somewhere with a hundred other people screaming and wailing. The problem isn’t the paying of tax, it’s the scandalous wasting of that money by the idiots in Westminster, Cardiff and the local council.

The Lucy Letby’s and Harold Shipman’s of this world a few and far between, most nurses, doctored, healthcare assistants and the countless other people working in the NHS do a really good job. In terms of your comment about holding the country to ransom, they deserve a decent salary and if we can’t oblige them they’ll up-sticks and go somewhere where that can get it. My mate’s daughter who was a highly trained nurse working in the NHS has just packed her job in, she’s off to earn more money in the Middle East. She will be difficult to replace, she’s one less nurse to help the sick and ill in the U.K.

Full pension available after 46 years of service (although this has relatively recently changed from 44 years). Yet some still believe there are gold plated public service pensions available after 30 years. |
They are certainly far better than in the private sector.

Yet it’s still difficult to recruit. Why is it with the stupendously good terms and conditions we can’t get people into the classroom? You’d think all the people looking is saying what an easy life it is with a wonderful pension would just do it. Loads of routes in these days, some with generous bursaries. You can get golden handcuff deals too due to the high attrition rate. [Post edited 23 Aug 2023 21:21]

Pensions may be better than the private pensions, but public sector pay is tagging well behind the private sector. The police are struggling to recruit and retain as is the teaching profession. I’ve known quite a few few teachers in my time and my uncle and his wife rose through the ranks to become head teachers in comprehensive schools. The extra hours they put during the evenings and on weekends was huge. Some of the teachers I know haven’t risen to those heights, but most still put the extra hours in.

Yes pay in the public sector is less and contrary to belief the pensions aren't as gold plated as people think. The final salary pensions have long gone, there are quite a few recruits don't join the scheme because it isn't worth it and in 30 years time there might not be a pension scheme, I advise new recruits not to join and to buy a house to rent.

Final salary is also or in some cases been abandoned in the public sector too. People on here are “bickering” amongst ourselves (myself included) - in reality workers are being short changed on pensions and a raft of other things. Maybe if we could get some of the people who could work, but choose not to and choose to live on benefits instead of contributing to society and working we’d be able to divert some money from unemployment benefit and put it in to pensions and health.
