I must admit that I do enjoy reading Felix's posts , they're usually entertaining and regardless of the topic somehow manages to deflect the blame/fault onto the opposition .

OK I'll stand up to be counted. Inheritance tax is totally unfair in this day and age. Why should my next generation pay tax on what I have worked bloody hard to generate. Considering I have already paid tax on everything I have earned.

Killy would rather live off benefits payed for by others. If people work hard and pay theirs taxes when they are living why should the government tax them again when they are dead.

It's a bit confusing for those who argue about unfairness between generations to contemplate the pros and cons of inheritance tax.

Because it effects a small minority of people who in the main have hit the £1,000,000 benchmark when you start to pay the tax by buying a house ages ago in an area that became desirable over time and is now worth a fortune. They’ve not really ‘done’ anything to earn it. You can leave you’re dependents £999,999 without troubling the tax man one bit. I also don’t buy the double tax argument. We’re double taxed on most things. That’s life. I see that’s its emotive mind, as it’s seen as a tax on grief and that is a concern. Also the mega rich will have found away around it anyway.
| Rishi Sunak is considering removing the winter fuel allowance ... on 12:18 - Sep 30 with 3369 views | Dr_Winston | The fairest tax of all is VAT. Income Tax should be a flat tax. A personal allowance of say £20,000, then a percentage applied to all equally above that. Higher earners will still pay considerably more tax than lower earners, but at the same rate. VAT however can be levied at different rates depending upon what's being purchased. Essential goods such as food, clothes and energy should be VAT free. Other items could attract different levels of VAT depending upon what they are. For example, you could have different rates of VAT for cars depending upon the value of the vehicle. A Ford Fiesta could be 10%. A Ferrari 40%. Private school fees a rate of 50%. Those who spend the most money on the highest value items will pay more tax. | |

Obviously property inflation has an impact but you have to work to buy the property, often if you work harder and longer hours you can afford more. During this time you pay your taxes. If you also have business interests and sell up when you retire or ease up you also pay tax. Thow in if you have relatives with no children and you are a benefactor in their will there could possibly be double inheritance tax, even though they have also paid tax all their lives. Add onto the equation any life insurance that you have paid over many years. Gwyn it's not always simple. Often it comes down to when you pass on and your financial standing at that time.

I’m pretty ambivalent about it to be honest mate, possible because I don’t know of anyone who will be affected. I do see a bit of unfairness though in that the person who bought their house in say Swansea in 1980, is massively disadvantaged to the person who bought theirs in Tunbridge Wells at the same time. They both would have worked equally hard yet one will have generated a fortune more by doing nothing more.

Your paying tax ensures millions can let the State pay for everything in their rancid lives .

You never know but it would need something exceptional to happen. I manages to get in the housing ladder in 2002 and caught the last real property rise but nothing like has happened previously. I’m pretty comfortable thankfully and as long as I don’t get myself sacked I’ll have a decent retirement. I wont be anywhere near the inheritance tax threshold though.

It should be means tested, what's the point in giving it to people who clearly don't need it
