| Are NHS Wales fiddling the numbers on 17:29 - Oct 16 by Whiterockin | OK I'll tell you the exact details of when it happened to me. Minding my grandson he fell and cut his head. We stemmed the bleeding and it stopped. I wasn't sure if he needed to go to A&E to be checked so I phoned 111. They said to take him to A&E as there may be signs of concussion and for him to be checked out. They said although he would be prioritised he may still have to wait and to phone neath and morriston to see who had the lower waiting time as from the LC2 there wasn't much difference in travelling time. We went to Port Talbot on arrival we were told we did exactly the right thing. [Post edited 16 Oct 2023 22:21]

Port Talbot doesn’t have a fully blown A&E, it’s a minor injury Unit as is the facility in PPH, Llanelli. They should both be doctor led, but there are times they’ll have a nurse led service if they are short of doctors. The 2 hospitals with the A&E’s are Glangwili and Morriston. Depending on what’s wrong with the patient the MIU could be the right choice as it was in your case, but for the more serious stuff it has to be the A&E. Lots of the issues in A&E stem from issues in Primary Care and to do with bed blocking when elderly patients can’t be discharged from wards because there are no places in homes or care packages available. If more people were seen in Primary care and others were discharged from hospital, then we wouldn’t have ambulances stacked up. The Health Boards are facing massive real term budget cuts going forward and that’s only going to make things worse.

My mum was taken very poorly earlier this year, we honed 999 and even though they graded the call as requiring the highest level of response the operator couldn’t give me a time of arrival as they didn’t have a vehicle. In the end we trussed my mum up and a few of us managed to get her in the car and I drove her to the hospital- it was like one of those chase scenes from the sweeney!

100%. Questions need to be asked, we don’t need this Labour- Conservative ding dong, smoke and mirrors points scoring BS, we need some pretty serious questions asked and people held to account. We need the press to step up to the plate and ask the awkward questions rations, if Drakers, Eluned Morgan or whoever is falling short then they need the boot - end of. It’s difficult to make really accurate comparisons between services because things like deprivation, poverty, age profile etc all impact on service delivery. I also understand that there are exemptions and the reason for the exemptions, but the way the figures are compiled must be consistent across all the areas to enable comparisons to be made. There will always be differences, one service has to be top and one has to be bottom while the others will be in the middle - but the key thing is the gap between the bottom, the middle and the top. If the bottom is falling further behind that’s a massive issue and huge case for concern, if the bottom is closing the gap then it’s still a concern, but one that’s representing an improving picture.

Exactly, fiddling the data means that we have no idea about how healthcare is performing and so is a risk to the population. This constitutes gross misconduct.

Family members are sadly often forced to make an extremely serious gamble/choice in circumstance when somebody is serioulsy ill. For example... do concerned relatives risk further medical complications by lifting a fallen, collapsed, injured or serioulsy ill patient off the floor to travel to A+E by car? Or wait until its maybe too late? "Golden hour" and all that! It's common knowledge now that ambulances can take many hours to arrive. And they often arrive way too late, hence need for a car.... But yet it's ambulances that have the vital life saving kit on board. What a horrid choice/gamble to make. Now I have experienced a person who has fallen/collapsed onto a floor, and lifting up a floppy deadweight is completely different to lifting a 'balanced/rigid' short length of girder or heavy barbell. On most occasions its absolutely impossible for one person to do, especially if a person is unresponsive or very heavy…. 999 phone-line operator/response discourages doing that completely. In fact NHS ambulance service paramedics along with St Johns paramedics carry air hoist chairs with inflatable stage, by stage process/raising involving a pneumatic compressor to get a patient into a lifting position, if able to walk with assistance after appraisal e.g. usual stuff “wiggle toes on both feet, how much pain are you in, how weak/dizzy are you”. This is standard-type lifting kit that ambulance paramedics use and are equipped with, and it is expensive. They way things are, people will have to buy one ourselves? https://www.sealmedical.com/pr

Their current idea is all new properties must have solar panels adding £20K to a new build. That will really encourage the building of social housing.

It does not cost anything like £20,000 to install solar panels. A decent 6kw system with 10kw battery cost around £10,000 to install on on existing property should be even cheaper when installing it on a new build.

Well that's an idea I agree with. I have said on here (ages, maybe years ago) that all new build and all public building should have solar panels fitted. it'd be worth the short temr expense for the huge returns. Unfortunately power companies don't like this idea, nor do the construction companies, it means smaller profits for them both and for the builders a house will take longer to "throw up" (which is what they do and why so many new builds have big problems, some staright away) so they will argue against it. I think the rewards will outweight the costs thogh and it's virtually risik free, after all, if the Sun stops shining then it really won't matter.

I don't think power companies are all that bothered. The amount of properties without solar far outweigh those with. Builders for sure could do without the hassle.

Absolutely. My brother in law reckons a decent 6kw system installed by electricians as opposed to a specialist contractor comes in around £6k down in West Wales. Anyone installing them on a new build won’t pay VAT either and running cables etc is easier so it’s defo a no brainier to install in the build stage. My neighbour installed hot water solar when he was building his house, it saves him a fortune. Houses these days are so well insulated, I wouldn’t be surprised if a new house with solar and air source is carbon neutral. [Post edited 17 Oct 2023 22:16]

I think the government should go further and fund rolling out solar to every houseowner who wants it. if we get to the point where we generate more than we use in the UK then sell it abroad, sell it to the EU. Dr W, if that point came the electric utilities would be blown away, out of business for the most part. Th gas comanies would also suffer but that point is a very long way off even if they started doing it tomorrow. It's a pipe dream really.
| Are NHS Wales fiddling the numbers on 19:22 - Oct 18 with 1216 views | Dr_Winston | If we are to take the £6000 average figure for installing a solar system to be accurate, there are approximately 26.4 million private dwellings in the UK (source, ONS). That would result in a cost of approximately £158bn, or just £10bn short of the annual NHS budget. That's even if you could source all the parts required, the shortage of which would no doubt drive up the price considerably. Obviously not all of those dwellings would be suitable (flats for example) and many already have it installed, but even if we drop the figure down to 20 million houses, it's still not something any Government would take on. Hell, if they installed that much copper wiring in some places the tenants would have it all out anyway. | |

That backs up my previous thread posts. And to think, that the person inside the ambulance had to probably wait many hours for an ambulance to turn up in the first place anyhow.

My wife spent 5 hours with our 92 year old neighbour last Friday who was lying on her kitchen floor in agony with what turned out to be fractured knee, her daughter (who lives in Bristol) arrived at around 8pm. The ambulance arrived 12 hours later a full 17 hours after the initial call. With hindsight I wish I had carried her to the car & drove her to the hospital myself. Those in charge should be ashamed.

We rushed our Grandson into A&E Morriston a couple of weeks ago, he had a burst Abscess in his mouth, and was spewing up a horrible green fluid. It came on him so quickly it was frightening. A&E was heaving, it was a Saturday evening. He was seen immediately by a doctor and within a short period of time was down in theatre having five first teeth removed and the abscess completely drained. Kept in overnight on a drip, a course of antibiotics and is now right as rain. Very impressed by the prompt action of the A&E staff which probably averted a much more serious condition. Another positive note regarding prostate cancer sufferers in Wales who have now been gained access to a drug on the NHS which could have a significant benefit regarding their life expectancy.
