| Darling deserted his post. 16:23 - Dec 17 with 1744 views | ReslovenSwan1 | The point lost and two points for Boro are entirely attributable to Rushworth not using his brain and Darling. I have examined the freekick and Darling took the easy option and let his teammates down. It is not obvious but his did not want to get hurt, Unacceptable. This is a man I have touted as the next captain. Congreve took an easy option v Cardiff u21 last week leading to a Cardiff goal . If players do not want to get hurt Chartered accountancy is a better career. Perhaps they do not have the 'minerals'. Darling who would have blocked the shot if he stayed on his line rushed out but closed his eyes and turned his back. His running line was not to the ball but towards the receiving player who never got the ball. This created the space for the goalscorer. [Post edited 17 Dec 2023 16:24]

If Darling was brave enough to keep his eye on the ball and ran straight at the ball he would have blocked it. It is very rare for these free kicks to go in. If players turn their backs then the taker has a chance. It happened in the 3-0 Boro loss i the premier league. The giant Boro Italian no 9 hit a shot at Swansea defenders and both Amat and Taylor turned their bodies to get hit of the side not the stomach. The effect was like letting light through a venetian blind. The ball sailed through the middle between them.

That’s certainly untrue. It’s very difficult to bypass so many players when they’re just a few yards away and can easily charge down the kicker to narrow the angle. It’s usually blocked. But what’s the rule regarding where a free kick is taken from? If it’s handled say three yards from goal as I notived the Boro free kick was taken from around six yards.

Grimes should have been number one in the line up, He is captain. If Darling was captain he would have blocked it. Grimes tucked himself somewhere in the middle.

Grimes is on gong on £1m a year. He has to "front up" and lead this team. The frist player on the post should stop that shot 9 time of out of 10.

That’s the most depressing thing you’ve posted. No wonder Grimesey loves the city ,club, fans, schools, chapels ,the down and out the disadvantaged not forgetting the Swansea wild animals . Just a shame no club would buy him . The plaudits other coaches give him are p takes really and nine of them would have him in their team as he weakens any team he is in.

What I don't understand is why nobody questioned where the free kick was taken from, Rushworth picked the ball up at about a 70 or 80 degree angle to the goal, the free kick was taken closer to a 45 degree, referees usually go over and mark the spot the offence was committed. Going back to Darling, what I saw was a player trying to charge down a free kick, nothing unnatural about his body shape.

Job for the captain really before the ball was kicked

Don't the rules state in those circumstances the the free kick has to be taken on the 6 yard line, in line with where the offence was committed. EDIT llegal back-passes are punished with an indirect free-kick wherever the handling occurred. If the back-pass was committed inside the six-yard penalty area, the kick will be taken from the point of the six-year box where of the offense happened. [Post edited 17 Dec 2023 17:20]

A square on body is roughly twice the surface area of a body side on. Being hit on the side is less painful than a hit in the guts or below. These are "professional" footballers paid to get blocks in. He did not do his job. If Grimes had any doubts about his defenders he would have taken charge himself as captain.

if Grimes swapped places with a defender in a situation like that we'd be questioning why. Why would Grimes have any doubts about the bravery of Darling?

I guess you've never kicked a football in your lifetime. Boro were a 99.9% certainty go score from that situation. Mind blowing some of the comments on this thread.
| Darling deserted his post. on 17:49 - Dec 17 with 1484 views | RichardO | But it is a mute point if Rushworth had not picked the ball up then there would be no free kick, Rushworth knew when the ball hit the back of the net he was to blame, his reactions confirmed it, a brain freeze moment on his part he won't be doing it again anytime soon. He is a quality goalkeeper we will be very luck to have him the rest of the season let alone the next season As for Darling he is good defender who has been played out of position twice in the last two games, he suffered in the first but with the protection that Key offered played well yesterday as did most of the team. If that line up had played against against a number of teams we have played lately since the Leicester game we would have a lot more points. Nobody could complain that the likes of Fulton and Grimes didn't play well or get further up the park which is what most of us have complained about. Two goals conceded because of a stupid mistakes and referee's bad positioning with the players perception of how the passage of play would progress if he hadn't been in Fulton's way. Rub of the green didn't go our way, let's see what happens in the next game because that is all we can do. . | | | |
