| 2026 Unemployment 09:53 - Jan 9 with 11583 views | JACKMANANDBOY | My son spoke to a recruitment consultant yesterday who works for one of the big UK consultancies. She said that the number of vacancies she is being asked to source for has plummeted to the levels seen in COVID. A couple of conversations I've had with someone looking for a job and a guy that employs around 80 people back this up, finding a graduate job in the North East of England is very difficult. People are sticking with their jobs in South Wales, the employer has seem staff turnover almost stop in the last three months, he is using overtime a lot more to cover additional demand rather than take people on. The staff profile in his business means his NI bill has doubled in the last year. With higher employment taxes, increases in business rates, increases in IHT for family businesses, the tightening of employee rights and the possible use of of AI, employers are going to think very carefully about hiring. Unemployment is going to increase this year. [Post edited 9 Jan 14:36]

| 2026 Unemployment on 10:58 - Feb 17 by majorraglan | In relation to the second point, quite a few employers (including Tesco) now employ staff on part time contracts for example 4 hours per day but actually require the staff to work “compulsory overtime” in some cases up to and beyond 37.5 hours a week. This means if the staff report sick etc they only get paid their contracted hours, it also makes getting a mortgage more difficult as the contracted hours income etc is so low. Annual Leave payments will also be reduced in comparison to a full time worker. Part time work suits some, as do zero hour contracts, but there are also potentially massive pitfalls. There are good and bad employers out there. |
Leave will be calculated on actual hours worked not the employees contract.

Incorrect. Actual Annual Leave entitlements are based on contracted hours, however payment should be based on average earnings including overtime, but that’s not always clear cut.
| 2026 Unemployment on 15:45 - Feb 17 with 1942 views | Demitrius | Speaking of Tesco many Tesco Express in my area are having to close during hours they are supposed to be open due to staff shortages. Speaking to the staff in my local one the hours, pay, terms and conditions are so bad many quit after a few weeks and the reputation is now so bad they can't get people to apply. | |

Ah Paul. A magnanimous Pontardawe man and a true fierce Cymro both footy and rugger… I was very upset I couldn’t make his funeral as I was riddled with gout at the time, a condition now managed thankfully with lifestyle changes and meds. I was in a bad way otherwise hell or highwater wouldn’t have stopped me. 3 fine sons are his legacy. Why do the good die young eh ? Respect….

Universal Credit will be their next go to option for these youngsters . And the hamster wheel keeps turning for them in their career path to make good of themselves making an effort to work . | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The government policies are making it very difficult financially to employ people, particularly small businesses. The knock on is particularly affecting apprenticeships, small businesses are just not taking them on because of cost. Unless something dramatically improves quickly we will soon have a massive trades shortage. Expect the already expensive call outs for trades like plumbers to double.

I had already read that article and thought that was unlike the guardian to print that kind of story. They did stick the knife in the previous government that the increases were necessary to repair Britain’s battered public finances and to fund services run down over 14 years of Conservative-led government. Now the party can't do any more u-turns because the media will hammer them.

Reality cutting through, even for the Guardian? Incidentally, it was once my favorite newspaper.

| 2026 Unemployment on 13:59 - Jan 10 by Gwyn737 | I also think about the long term effect on pensions. Its inevitable that retirement age is going to rise and with the cost of living, squirrelling money away for 50 odd years seems hard work. I think we need to be clear with young people that it’s one of the first things they need to do with their pay check from the minute they start work. |
Unfortunately, they are going to have to pay more into pensions.

Lot of figures being thrown around about that. Bit of context required here I think. The numbers on UC have grown significantly over the last couple of years as a result of the Move to UC process. Basically all those on some existing benefits (Tax credits, housing benefit, Income Based JSA and ESA) have had their claims transferred over onto UC. This would have been done years ago but Covid put a spanner in the works. This process is now largely complete. Carer's Allowance is the only one that hasn't changed where a UC equivalent exists, and I have no idea when it will be. What we really need to know to get an accurate figure is how many people have claimed UC who weren't previously getting anything else. Not sure if that 1.5m reflects that. It's certainly lower than those on the closing benefits. Also, a lot of those who would have been receiving Tax Credits had their claims transitionally protected for twelve months but then became subject to full UC regulation and closed their claims as a result. I know of a number of cases where people were receiving Tax Credits when they had more than £100,000 in the bank. They don't qualify for UC. There will also be those who claim UC now who didn't previously because they earned too much to get the two child amount but may qualify now that limit has been removed. [Post edited 29 Apr 19:33]

It's a harder benefit to guage if the numbers have gone up or not, from my position on the shop floor at least. Under the old system if people started work their claims almost always closed so you could have a pretty reasonable idea, but under UC that's not necessarily the case. I know we're not currently getting floods of new claims in. For example, after spending most of last year making emergency plans for Tata we've seen almost nobody. Not even contractors. It's possible that those who already had existing claims are finding it harder to get enough hours to drop their entitlement to UC down to zero for long enough for the claim to close.

Her £30 billion NI tax hike, increased business rates and large increase to minimum have led to unemployment rising from 4% , when labour won the election, to 5% now. Not sure why the BBC headline says unexpected rise in unemployment rate though.

Economists had not expected a rise, god knows why? Retail and hospitality hit hardest, often marginal businesses where young people have their first job. [Post edited 19 May 9:09]

That was a bit of a strange one especially on the back of the Iran war and how badly that has affected economies. People also better turn off the gas and leccy soon as that it expected to go up by 13% in July
