Don't be Addicks - Charlton Athletic vs QPR Match Thread 03:18 - Feb 4 with 42435 viewsSpaceman_P

Riding high from the previous weekends pant pulling of Coventry.

I feel there is positivity in the camp, weirdly I think Field going may phase the team.

However if its the same team line up and if Vale and Madsen are on fire.

We'll be the Orgasm Addicks not them

Charlton Diuretic 0 QPR 3

Kone, Dunne and Vale

Thought the set up was fine for the first half: Charlton came out hard as expected and created a lot of chances.
However it was unlikely they could keep those levels going for the second half and so it proved. We should’ve gone for it more a lot earlier than injury time: a goal would’ve won it for us. Walsh clear MOTM but Cook and Dunne were imperious as usual. Edwards isn’t a right back, especially going forward. Thought Kone had another good game, really looking like a decent Championship striker now. Saito was way off it. Thought Dykes had one of his better games for them.

Apart from the injuries he bought Edwards to play in the middle of defence - agree with you he isn’t a right back. Not fast enough there either.
Ideally Mbengue at right back and Edwards in the middle with Dunne but Cook has been playing so well he can’t leave him out at present.

I never lie but I don't always tell the truth

Not too unhappy with that despite us being pretty abject for 80 mins . 58% possession . 18 shots on goal . Only 3 on target but we had 7 shots blocked or charged down which were perhaps on target so doesn’t tell the whole story .
We just weren’t very good at all for the bigger part of the game .
Stéphan has got a problem really because we looked completely different with Kolli and Bennie on the pitch . They weren’t perfect by any stretch but they got hold of the thing and looked to play .
I just can’t see them having the same impact when starting . It’s a problem .
First time I’ve seen Jimmy beaten several times in the air by the same player . He was given a tough evening but Cook dealt with Dykes brilliantly and was my man of the match by a mile .
Well done to Walsh too. Some big saves there .

We have to re think our tempo and intensity away from home. Tough for the head coach as we have very little option at the moment .But Saito is way , way off at the moment . He looks like we are giving a kid a game . He doesn’t work away from home right now . Smyth not much better but a little.
But as a team we have to be more at it than we have looked in the last 7 or 8 league away games .

A cliche, but if you don't play well, don't lose. Could have stolen it at the end.
Typical Jones side, get the ball in the box as soon as you can or down the channels.
IMO I would have started with Bennie and brought on Saito when the game was stretched.
Koli on much earlier also.

Point on the road. Onto next game.

U R'sss.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Sorry if already said, but just relieved to see Dykes and Kelman both fail to score.
Not a great game but that will surely help Walsh’s confidence, and a great save from Coady shot.
Cook was fantastic.

Would be nice to see us get ourselves going away from home earlier in a game.

Our tactics for away games either seem to be:

- backwards of square, crab formation forwards, everyone keep hold of the rope, see if something transpires, if not - abort - everybody back. (And that's the one I actually prefer of the two god help me)

- OR if we have Burrell - whack it long, Rumarn will put the shits up them, if not mop it up and try again

We had a free kick today that even Andy Sinton tried his best not to criticise. 90 seconds from time and we literally went sideways-sideways-diagonal-goal kick.

We have the means to be a lot more direct, aggressive and energetic regardless of who is available but we don't even seem to try to play like that away from home.

Please stop kidding yourselves about who’s out there and who isn’t.
He would still set us up the way he did today regardless.

It’s a $hit football philosophy from an apparently cultured exponent of the game.

It’s barely watchable David Brent cringeworthy stuff ffs.

That's interesting, I think he's looked quite good on the stream, especially with Saito offering nothing on either side of the ball in front of him.

He's a tidy player and a good defensive full back, but watch that first half back. Many opportunities to drive in to space like he did when he was central, but he rarely took them.

That back 4 will keep the oppo out, but won't create much...

Can we go out yet?

Thought JS too cautious away. So often the attacks just fizzle out.

Credit to Charlton they worked v hard but it took its toll in the last 20 minutes, particularly the final 10 mins. When the opposition plays the game that way round this forum blame us for not attacking earlier. When the opposition play the game like Wrexham it’s we are not fit enough or mentally strong. Probably neither are true.

It was a fair result. Walsh and Cook MoM.

That was the moment where I was glad I wasn't there.
90+ minutes, free kick, dead central, 35 yards out, and we played it backwards and sideways into the right back spot. That would have been chair out of the moorings stuff. And I'd have done so well to that point as well.

We are giving Charlton way too much credit. A very poor side who were there for the taking for a brave side, same as Oxford

How can the 1st half set-up have been 'fine', if, as you say, Charlton had a pile of chances (and could/should have been 2-0 up at the interval)? What manual of game plans are you taking that from?

It’s quite simple. The set up was ‘fine’ as, despite Charlton coming out of the gates strongly and having a lot more attacking threat, we stood firm and got to half time level with it being likely that Charlton’s levels would drop in the second half. We should have built on that in the second half but only really got going in injury time.

It was a very Lyndon performance wasn't it - couldn't fault the effort, charged about, caused us problems. Three very decent chances fell to him, no goals scored.

But where does that leave our King Kone by comparison? (Didn't really impact the game. Had, what, one/two attempts in the last 10 mins. No goals.)

I do think it is always worth remembering we're missing Chair (who everybody underrates his importance), Burrell, Varane, JCS (lol), Dembele, Poku, Obikwu, Larkeche. It's a lot of pay roll sitting in the stand.

Not sure I under estimate Illy's influence!

Wasnt a bit worried about Dykes and Kelman. Dykes is proven waste of space and money and for what i ve seen of Kelman he isnt much better.

The two widemen stank the place out, not sure how you can mount attacks playing 4-2-1-1, horrendous for Vale and Kone trying to play in that scenario.

Thought the other 8 and the keeper deserve a round of applause for getting us through that.

This.

It's a huge problem. We don't have a winger who has the strength to actually beat the opposition full back and put a good ball in. Maybe if they glue Poku back together? Maybe Sutton next season?

And Edwards has to move to CB so that he can stepup and break the press.
Still another point on the road.

Neither side really offered much in this game, we have become difficult to beat away from home, which is good, a point is fine. But the football away from home is pretty anemic, but then again important not to lose, especially with our injury list.

It may or may not be a minority view, but I'd rather see us giving ourselves a real chance to win (especially winnable) games, even if we sometimes lose. And, above all, by playing in the spirit of the game, which Stephan clearly doesn't, certainly away from home.

I'm so fair-minded and good when it comes to football I hate flukes and want the better/more enterprising team to win every time. I suppose it dilutes my support for QPR at times that way. If so, so be it.

Worth stating that Charlton have only lost four games at home this season (less than us) and tonight was only the second time they have not scored at home, with the last time coming in August.

Whether happy or not with a draw is down to opinion but there was a total lack of any quality across the team.. we're setting up in away games as if we're still fighting relegation. Let's be straight, Charlton are sh!t, and there for the taking, but we were too focused on not losing from the start that we overlooked the opportunity. This season is a big opportunity to make the playoffs but we seem keen not to take it.

Agreed. If it goes on, I'm starting to feel I'd like us to shake hands at the end of the season, tbh. I even miss Warburton.

We only got to 0-0 at half-time thanks to Walsh literally saving us on two or three occasions, and Charlton/Dykes being so inept. No offence, but your support for that set-up can get in the sea as far as I'm concerned. Mind you, I'm sure the manager would give you (French) kisses.

I absolutely wouldn't, because the home form has been so much more better, and so much more enjoyable, than for quite a while.

JS is far from a lost cause imho.
