Stunned to see no mention of Sam Matterface yet. He is an instant mute. Look at that Eze goal for England as an example. He is also desperate to try and crowbar in chelsea scum talk, no matter how strenuous the link.
Him and Drury are equally dreadful.
Weaver as mentioned also terrible.
None of them adhere to the Benaud maxim. Just spout bollox and prepared unfunny/unclever cr8p they try and shoehorn in.
I used to think Tyldesley and Champion were rubbish but actually in comparison to the current crop were not that bad.
My favourites were Davies, Moore and Peter Brackley

Was it Davies who used that line "you have to say that’s magnificent.". Always cracked me up. Gritted teeth!
Paddy mentioned Jimmy Magee. here's his superb commentary on the same goal.
Never heard that before. That's so stark compared to what modern commentators would be doing - as James has pointed out.
This is commentary to compliment pictures. Modern commentary attempts to be theatre in itself. Sometimes the pictures do all the talking. Just let them.

I quite like Jon Champion. He was doing Premier League in America when I was over there recently and it made me realise how much I liked him versus some of the others on the circuit now.

Jon Champion and Ally McCoist at the World Cup in Russia 2018 was peak commentary for me. Two good mates cutting about the place having a fantastic time, and their enjoyment of it all came through on the tele.

My biggest bug bear is that the commentators seem terrified to say when a game stinks! I've watched so many poor games, where they are talking it up, like its the most exciting thing ever...
Don Goodman is probably on the list for me, always referring back to what he would have done, as if he had the career of Messi

Much like Clive Tyldesley was wont to do with Man United in a match involving South Korea vs Senegal.

Ally McCoist for me, I can't stand him. Chels supporting prick. We have heard your 5 jokes a million times.
At last someone else who thinks this!
He says the bleeding obvious and mixes it with half-laughter about the "hilarious" things he's saying or thinks he's seeing. Football doesn't have to be funny mate!!!
Every time he's co-commentating, my family just look at me and laugh, although they do that quite a lot come to think of it.
Gary Citadels-Weaver is the worst commentator, just ahead of Peter "It's (insert and shout footballer's name)" Drury.
I’m pro-McCoist. Anti-Matterface. Very anti-Hinchcliffe.
Did enjoy Neville slaughtering that nonsense delaying the game (twice for a total of about 15 minutes) yesterday because the linesman’s mic wasn’t working.

Oooh you won't like Nev when he's angry.
Found it somewhat hypocritical when it's his paymasters who helped instigate that mic'd up BS in the first place!

Think it would exist regardless. I despise what Sky have done to the sport but it can’t be in their interests for the match to be stopped twice for an indefinite period of time because a flag is no longer suitable on its own for a linesman.
Peter Alliss. He was a commentator. Did a brilliant balance of explaining things for novices without being condescending about it and giving real insight and a few laughs to people more versed in the game. Michael Holding, Sid Waddell. The likes we won’t hear again and in ten years it’ll be KSI and Cole Palmer telling us 35-year-old Saka has really frubed a 6-7 before zonking it to Mars

Now you mention it - the current crop of Sky golf commentators are absolutely appalling. Nick Dougherty especially. I appreciate they have to sit there for hours on end talking but they repeat everything they know about anyone involved at least every single hour. I imagine they must assume people only tune in for 30 mins to an hour max.
A couple of years ago at the Masters there was an amateur that competed at the top end of the leaderboard for the first three days. Now, get this... he had a tattoo on his arm. Yes, a real life permanent tattoo. Dougherty and Paul McGinley must have mentioned this tattoo a thousand time easily over the week. It was ridiculous. They also find it seemingly impossible to mention Scottie Scheffler without mentioning he's ranked number one in the world. It verges on unlistenable.
This is how it's done...

Mic'd up is very much an American phenomenon and not the brainchild of SKY.
I quite like the Refcam though that TNT have bought in. Imagine if that had been around to record John Terry?
Yeah and I appreciate that element of tech is not necessarily down to Sky.
I just found Neville's indignation hard to take/laughable, given his paymasters have pretty much ruined football as we know it! But clearly like the other "pundits" he was just playing to the camera.
Andy Hinchcliffe, for some unknown reason hates us with a passion.
Whoever we play, if he is the co commentator, he ridicules ourselves and bigs up our opposition and their players big time.
Its not blatantly obvious, but its the snide digs that cut deep and often. And if we are playing well, maybe the opposition have lost all their best performers or its a Friday, there always is a reason not to congratulate ourselves.....
The most mutable moments are the "Aguer ooo" goal and the after party minutes from Martin Tyler and Niall Quinn as I hate seeing it now, even though we had some great moments that day.

Him and Roy Keane are now self-aware, so its almost like a soap opera. Reactions and comments are 100% hyped for the audiences now.
But, if we want to blame one person its Jake "high performance" Humpheries. Poisonous stuff coming out of him, like listening to someone reading out LinkedIn profiles

I remember back in the day - 70s and 80s commentators did just that. Commentate. They would let the pictures of the match do the talking, they never over egged the pudding. Modern commentators are already extrapolating the score after 20 minutes into what will happen over the course of the season. Even the sky commentator yesterday was speculating about Hull challenging for automatic promotion and QPR in the play offs. When, let's face it, both teams were dire for the majority of the match. Brian Moore was my favourite. An absolute genius for simply explaining what was in front of him in a generous and genuinely enthusiastic way.
Yes Brian Moore was an excellent commentator. Died too soon.
