The second including the build up was a thing of beauty. |
Thought the first one had the better build up, how many touches did we have those short passes trying to tempt the opposition to come out of position once they did the switch to Key and a pinpoint pass to the oncoming Idah.
The second was the result of the press being carried out correctly not giving the opposition time to consider their opposition resulting in a poor pass initially and poor control by the recieving player capitalised tight defending by Tymon the speed of the resultant attack clinical decisive option taking teeing up the chance. | | | |

If ever there was an eureka moment for the number 10 position that was Saturday afternoon. I’m normally worried about players whom are a bit on the small side playing in the Championship with its emphasis on physicality but my word Walta’s abilities shone above all others. No-one was getting the ball off him, his movement between defenders was top class and his ball retention encouraged others to get forward far more quickly. With Widdell/Franco behind him in the box to box role and and Galbraith/Stamenic holding we could have struck on a very effective formula for next season.
If we promote Woodward that gives us the luxury of maybe not relying so much on Ronald (who hasn’t kicked on but gone backwards) and with Eom and Inoussa as part of the wide player pool we’d be getting close to a more effective wide set up. Another coming in wouldn’t hurt but I’d be scouring the foreign market for a good quality speedster for the right price.
Likewise if we promoted Blair McKenzie to the first team squad we’d have a very promising CB to ease into the squad. Again it would be good maybe to move Santos on (whom Matos doesnt seem to fancy) and get a good ball playing CB in so we have the luxury of rotation but also to play 3-5-2 to accommodate more midfield players plus play Idah alongside Vipotnik. I’m not advocating we play this way all of the time but flexibility wise it’s a great tool for any manager to have at his disposal.
When I look back at some of our football this season especially Wrexham away I think we are VERY close to having a top end team next season. If we sold Cullen and Ronald and managed to find another good CB and Winger I think we’d be knocking loudly on the top 6 door next season.
One thing I’ve forgotten is if Walta will definitely sign as ours in July. I hope there's no way another club could get him. Our missing link and he has the potential to become one of the best attacking midfielders in the Championship. Optimistic !
Edit apologies I left out Fulton - we have a lot of strength in midfield now and potentially could use Walta/Eom/Siddell in that no.10 role. [Post edited 5 May 8:20]

One other thing that I noticed was when Woodward came on, Fulton was straight over to him to offer a few words of advice/encouragement. It's stuff like this that underlines why so many managers have continued to make him an integral part of proceedings.
Probably not as sure of a starting spot as a captain needs to be, but I doubt that any other changing room opinion carries more weight. [Post edited 2 May 23:44]

Glad to see Woodward was involved yesterday. Slightly off subject, with Yalcouye being a loan and not in our plans it was good to see Wood get his opportunity. Personally I like Yalcouye and has been our best loan. But reading between the lines in Matos press conference (Friday). He didn't seem to impressed with the loans this season. Nunes was hot and cold, but mostly cold. And the rest was meh except Yalcouye. |
Our problem for most of the season has been ball retention in the final third. It was so good yesterday a player like Nunes would have thrived in my opinion. If we are losing the ball and moves are breaking down then of course these types of players aren’t going to be as effective. Saturday’s second half showed just how good we can be when we keep the ball and consequently we keep the pressure on the opposition creating chance after chance. We definitely have the strikers to take advantage now with Idah looking at his best too. | | | |

How foolish have the past managers been to sideline him and laud Grimes as the next Pirlo/Hoddle (lol)? He has been criminally under used and Matos has seen his qualities and utilised them most effectively. Good man management of a good and very loyal player. |

We've had managers who play a fast passing game, we've had managers who play a slow defensive game, and in between. All of them have found a place for Fulton. It's not a coincidence that Allen and Britts pursuaded Matos to chuck him straight in for his first game.
I suspect in the end there will be a coaching place for him here if he wants it. He seems to have all the attributes required, including the respect of his colleagues. |  |
