The trouble is: everyone will be lying, and anyone who was involved won't be admitting it. So getting a solid truthful account of events will be difficult. These investigations in a company when the pointy fingers are flying are very hard to get right.

He is employed apparently in relation to employment law. We have a great journalist source down there.
The club will no doubt work it to blame him acting alone without their permission, just a guess. But of course GPDR access could scupper that. If it comes to it i would imagine the EFL will ask for telephone access to this lads phone and potentially others.
I can’t believe he just jumped in his car or there’s another point, has he got a car or a licence to drive ? Train tickets ? Who booked them etc.
Edit : If the club do blame this kid and the EFL prove otherwise then their punishment will almost certainly be far more.

I think everyone knows it's a breach of the law. The question is what the punishment. Law is based on precedent, so what have other teams had in relation to the same offence? I believe it was Leeds or Derby. However, law can't be based on whether you like Southampton or whether you like Middlesboro. |  | | |

They should definitely pick up a heavy fine and points deduction if one way or another their in the championship next season, or the points deduction carried over.

Unsure where you are going with that JJ.
There was no law when Leeds did it.
The act of them doing it enabled this to be brought in. There is no test case or precedent because this is the first time since the law came in. The sanctions from what I’ve been told aren’t cast in stone as that leaves too much of as you stated a ‘precedent’. This is why I think the EFL will chuck the book at them. Then the standards have been set. Southampton will hve 48 hrs to appeal then if deemed necessary that will be heard very quickly after their sanction is approved. | |

The penalty of 6 points is exactly what FIFA gave Canada Women for spying on France. Plus the coach involved was banned for a year, but perhaps no Soton coach was shown to be involved.
If this what they decide, they've followed a well chosen precedent. As FIFA is a superior body in football that makes it almost impossible for anyone to fight it with legal action. It also doesn't change the result on the pitch, a slippery slope to be avoided if possible.

I am under the impression that the EFL, Southampton and Middlesbrough are entitled to appeal. Its not the EFL enforcing any possible punishment.

This could turn out to be very important.
Firstly, Boro cannot attend Tuesday's hearing. Their evidence will be presented, but they will have no legal representation to argue their case.
This has angered Boro, who say that they are "directly affected by the matters under consideration and hold relevant factual evidence".
If the final outcome is not to Boro's liking - so any result which means Saints play Hull on Saturday - they have no right to appeal or challenge it.
Only the EFL or Southampton can appeal, which would be heard by an Independent League Arbitration panel with three new members.
An appeal should be held within 14 days, but the EFL is expected to ask for a resolution by Friday.
