| Defence Secretary Quits Over Funding 12:39 - Jun 11 with 4390 views | JACKMANANDBOY | https://www.independent.co.uk/ The below extract from Healey's resignation letter seems to indicate that Starmer is making promises internationally that he is reticent to fund. "Conflict in the Middle East, with the UK now leading the multinational Strait of Hormuz military mission; High North security, with the UK now leading Nato’s Arctic Sentry mission; increased Russian activity towards the UK and Nato nations and increased attacks in Ukraine, with the Paris Agreement confirming a British deployment to Ukraine after a ceasefire." Jonathan Beale at the BBC says Allies were beginning to ask questions. Mark Rutte when asked to comment said " I respect John Healey very much". [Post edited 11 Jun 13:00]

| Defence Secretary Quits Over Funding on 21:02 - Jun 11 by ReslovenSwan1 | I read state pension and tax threshold are now about equal. About £1000 per month. Reeves does not need to raise income tax as tax income will rise due to inflation as the tax free threshold £12k is fixed to 2030. Private pension have a 25% tax free component. A person with a private pension can get £24k p a oe £2k a month tax free. |
The state pension is not paid monthly its paid every 4 weeks. You also need to examine your figures regarding a personal tax free £24K a year. [Post edited 11 Jun 21:27]

| Defence Secretary Quits Over Funding on 21:11 - Jun 11 by JACKMANANDBOY | It's 25 percent of the pension fund that is tax free. Both private and public funded pensions have a tax free component. If you have a £20,000 fund then a tax free element of £5,000 applies. If the fund is £100,000 then the tax free element is £25,000. How and when you take the pension payment varies. There's a question around this, pension contributions get tax relief so the tax free element is open to discussion. Pensions are said to be the last resort of Governments in failure. Best we tax those people who have worked all their lives trying to plan for their retirement to pay for those who live off benefits or come to this country as we are a soft touch? | | | |

I cannot understand, given the demographic issues looming on the horizon with an ageing population, and the obvious, massive issues facing any future state pension as a result of that, how any Government can possibly not desperately encourage people to shovel as much money as they can into a private pension, save for retirement, and make that as cheap and/or tax efficient as humanly possible. Gordon Brown's tax raids on pension funds were bad enough and the problems resulting from that decision are obvious enough today, but continuing down that path should see the people responsible stripped of their own pensions as a punishment.

As big a berk as he is, he's not wrong about Russia being a paper threat. They're bogged down in an incompetent, bloody mess in Ukraine, losing thousands of men weekly to no gain. They'd have no chance against NATO, and very little chance against any of the seriously tooled up countries. Poland alone could probably beat them. We do need to increase defence spending and capability because a serious nation should be able to take care of its interests and its citizens, but not because of the Russians. They'll get their arses handed to them long before they get near us.

| Defence Secretary Quits Over Funding on 16:26 - Jun 11 by Gwyn737 | I think he's right to call out lack of funding. However, the amout of waste in procurement in the forces is eyewatering. I reckon a lot of people would accept payiing more tax if they could see it making a difference. |
He’s 100% right to call out the lack of funding, it’s a disgrace. We need to increase defence funding across a wide range of areas including cyber, espionage and the 3 services. I once worked with someone who’d worked up with the civil service in London, it was their view there were far too many consultants employed in these projects, the consultants were on good money and there was no incentive for them to rush and work too hard as they’d only be putting themselves out of work - kind of like turkeys voting for Christmas. My view is quite simple, work has to pay. Benefits should not pay more than work, I see no reading why someone taking home £25k on benefits isn’t paying tax on it because they’re going to be a lot better off than someone earning £25k from a job,

25k tax free while pensioners are likely to be getting taxed on their state pensions once they go over approximately £12.570 I think, just how the feck does that work.

The Welfare Bill or Defence budget going forward in our future years regarding safety . Starmer as per usual will appease his backbenchers and voters in throwing more money at crackpot schemes to get onside of his loyal and very happy electorate . Bloke must have skin like a rhino or so ignorant of what is happening in the real World . | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Defence Secretary Quits Over Funding on 19:48 - Jun 11 by Gwyn737 | Nope. They’ve been poor so far. I’d like to see them saving money, particularly on the welfare bill and redistributing that before upping taxes. They won’t do it, it would be too unpopular. Particularly if they start where they should do by scrapping the triple lock. |
This has been Starmers major downfall, limiting the WFA and welfare reform couldn't get past the left of the Labour party. Instead of using his massive majority to force change he bowed down and made u turn after u turn. The triple lock has to go as a start.

Unfortunately, the triple lock does have to go, although I think it is such a difficult issue that the ending would need to be a phased. However, it doesn't seem to me that it is the pensioners who make the lifestyle choices and engage in the most egregious milking of the system. I would look at disability and PIPs plus the two-child limit. The Government is already talking about addressing the NEETS problem by positive measures, but there might need to be some negative incentives to push young people towards work too.

We have a friend who has six children from two fathers. Aside from a brief job in a supermarket she has never worked, she's become a raging alcoholic and can't work. She gets £4k a month in various benefits, she doesn't pay council tax or rent.

That’s effectively a take home pay of around £60k per year, to take that kind of money home she’d need a gross salary of over £81k. It’s outrageous.

We have a smaller and smaller pool of people in work having to pay for a larger and larger number of pensioners. It’s not sustainable. I’ve got a way to go till state pension but I’ve decided not to rely on it as I can’t see it staying in its current form.

The whole pension system in the UK needs to be overhauled including public sector pensions.

Definitely does. There was a really good thread on here a little while ago about the issues of backloading public sector pay. Looking at increasing wages to attracted the best candidates and dropping pension contributions could be really effective. There has already been some significant erosion to teacher pensions, mind (for example final salary hasn’t been a thing for nearly two decades), but it’s still not enough.

For a start drop the triple lock and the amount you receive the day you start your state pension is the amount you get for life, inflation protect it but never above inflation.
