A by-election called solely to get Burnham elected to get rid of Starmer and it was achieved, this result will have no bearing on a GE. Labour now have a decision to make, change leader and change policies or just change leader. Any leadership challenge will mean prospective leaders will need to set out their plans for their party if elected. If these proposals differ dramatically from current policies and the last Labour GE manifesto there will need to be a GE called. Interesting times ahead. [Post edited 19 Jun 10:10]

This is my take on it. Burnham’s victory has been about changing ‘the now’ including most importantly getting Starmer out. Whether or not the next GE will be a different result will depend on how well he does as PM. He may not be any more popular than he is now and call an early GE? |  |

The Reform candidate was incredibly weak. He was made to look like a bit of a fool throughout the campaign, but apparently was the best they've got in that constituency.
Inadequate candidates is a theme with Reform and probably Restore. Their representatives need to be challenged and scrutinized long before election day. Sarah Pochin's recent domestic violence comments are shocking too, to the point of resignation. But they've barely been noticed.
We've also seen a Reform candidate who was a buffoon in the Morriston council by -election and Refrom losing their only Swansea Council seat in Mumbles.

It's really hard to tell what this means but I agree, Reform's choice of candidate (again) has been so poor it's bound to have had an effect.

The GE threat is probably the only card Starmer has left to play in order to cling to power. Launch a coup against me and I’ll call an election immediately. Labour have zero chance of winning and they know it and it’s probably Burnham’s last chance for the top job.
