Reform beaten for a start and by such a large margin, which considering their wins in the local elections just a month ago, is remarkable. It would be different if Burnham had scraped a win but his winning with such a margin will definitely make ALL Labour MP's sit up and think what he may be able to do across the whole of the UK.

Brilliant , FFS someones easily pleased . another deluded lefty who thinks alls well with the UK .I'm sure the muslim pakistani block vote would have had a big bearing on voting patterns but who cares as long as the left are happy .

| Makerfield election on 10:08 - Jun 19 with 3059 views | Whiterockin | A by-election called solely to get Burnham elected to get rid of Starmer and it was achieved, this result will have no bearing on a GE. Labour now have a decision to make, change leader and change policies or just change leader. Any leadership challenge will mean prospective leaders will need to set out their plans for their party if elected. If these proposals differ dramatically from current policies and the last Labour GE manifesto there will need to be a GE called. Interesting times ahead. [Post edited 19 Jun 10:10]

Thank you Boundy for another insulting for no good reason post that most who use this thread are I believe bored with. If you have an opinion why not express it rather than have a go at people whose opinion differs from yours. And the muslim/pakistani block vote, if indeed there is such a thing, had almost zero bearing on the Makerfield result as the constituency is 96% white.

This is my take on it. Burnham’s victory has been about changing ‘the now’ including most importantly getting Starmer out. Whether or not the next GE will be a different result will depend on how well he does as PM. He may not be any more popular than he is now and call an early GE?

| Makerfield election on 10:55 - Jun 19 with 2964 views | Demitrius | This was all about wanting Starmer out rather than Burnham in The public cannot stand him as he has all the charisma of a pint of lukewarm pish and makes John Major look like Marlon Brando in comparison. His incompetent clueless cabinet are even worse If Restore had withdrawn Reform would still have lost. This, like the Aberdeen result had mitigating circumstances and should not be seen as a trend | |

| Makerfield election on 11:11 - Jun 19 with 2902 views | Scotia | The Reform candidate was incredibly weak. He was made to look like a bit of a fool throughout the campaign, but apparently was the best they've got in that constituency. Inadequate candidates is a theme with Reform and probably Restore. Their representatives need to be challenged and scrutinized long before election day. Sarah Pochin's recent domestic violence comments are shocking too, to the point of resignation. But they've barely been noticed. We've also seen a Reform candidate who was a buffoon in the Morriston council by -election and Refrom losing their only Swansea Council seat in Mumbles. Now let's get Farage in the dock over his £5million gift from the fossil fuel / Crypto billionaire he received just before announcing Crypto and fossil fuel friendly policies. | | | |

It's really hard to tell what this means but I agree, Reform's choice of candidate (again) has been so poor it's bound to have had an effect. Mind you, it's not all doom and gloom for Reform as I expect they'll have a real go at the now vacant Manchester Mayor position.
| Makerfield election on 11:51 - Jun 19 with 2861 views | AnotherJohn | Despite what Burnham told the local voters to win the by-election, I expect this to result in a shift to the left,, including some watering down of Mahmood's immigration policies and a likely rise in borrowing. That will be a big gamble with Labour very much in the last chance saloon. | | | |

The GE threat is probably the only card Starmer has left to play in order to cling to power. Launch a coup against me and I’ll call an election immediately. Labour have zero chance of winning and they know it and it’s probably Burnham’s last chance for the top job. There’ll be plenty of “negotiations” over the next few days/weeks. Strap in this is about to get messy.

Also worth pointing out that this constituency is probably in the top five ‘safest’ Labour seats in the country. If Burnham (or any other Labour candidate) lost here it would be a monumental shock.

I don't know about safest JON. The majority in 2024 was 5,399. Not that big. When you think about how Labour have lost so much popularity over the last two years and how Reform have gained popularity, for Burnham to increase that majority from 5,399 to 9,000 plus is remarkable actually.

I wonder how much of it was a vote against Starmer rather than a vote for Burnham?

Brilliant result? For who this is a return to left wing policies that banished Labour from power for years, no way will Labour win a general election under Burnham in my opinion. I can see Corbyn being welcomed back in the fold, Mcdonnell was in happy tears this morning
