Yes the sign was changed from an African boy in a turban under Whitbread who also owned the Commercial to a white boy in Victorian clothes - presumably a miner or chimney sweep.
Last time I was there 2 summers ago I think the sign had gone altogether. |  |

The Original Sign: For decades, the sign depicted a smiling Black boy wearing a bejeweled turban. Local lore and historians have debated the origin, with theories ranging from a link to 18th-century wealthy families employing Black servants, to links with Swansea's historic copper trading industries, or simply a reference to a harbor buoy. Following local anti-racism campaigns, this sign was eventually removed.
The Second Sign: It was first replaced by an image of a smiling white boy who appeared to have coal or soot smudged on his cheeks.
The Current Sign: The sign was changed again to its current iteration, which features a somber, unkempt white boy dressed in Victorian-style clothing (including a black jacket and hat) with his eyes cast downward or obscured by shadow.
This is peculiarly different to pubs across England called The Black Boy which are generally named after King Charles II. It was a nickname coined by his mother because of the darkness of his skin and eyes. | |
