25% of the season gone this weekend: Swans injuries & fixtures that matter 22nd Oct 2026 20:36
On-loan teenage ‘sensation’ — not our words — Jeremy Monga will travel with the squad tomorrow as the Swans make the relatively short journey (well, it’s one road, ish) to Shepherd’s Bush to take on QPR at Loftus Road. The news we have is that Jeremy Monga could well make the bench after knuckling down in training over the past week or so. 1

Swansea City: Lawrence Vigouroux; Filip Lissah, Ben Cabango (captain), Stephen Welsh, Josh Tymon; Marko Stamenic, Stephen Eustaquio, Elijah Just; Joseph Opoku, Melker Widell, Adam Idah.

Substitutes: Andy Fisher, Jenson Seelt, Jay Fulton, Žan Vipotnik, Jisung Eom, Tom Iorpenda, Goncalo Franco, Tiago Parente, Ross Stewart.

Yes, we've had a good start. Admiration of it should be tempered with the acknowledgement of who we've played. Of our seven wins, four have come against teams currently in the bottom five. Three of those were at home. The fixtures have been kind.

If we want to stay where we are then we need to do better against other teams likely to be at the top end. We've barely laid a glove on either West Ham or Southampton and mustered up a grand total of four shots on target in 180 minutes of football against average Sheff Utd and Wrexham teams at home. Teams we might have managed to open up with a bit more emphasis on creativity.

I'm really not sure why it's so verboten to be looking at areas for improvement. We have to create more chances, especially against better organised opposition. If we don't then we're not going to stay top for long.

Of course we should be looking for areas to improve. I’m sure Matos is doing that constantly.

It’s also fair to point out that if we wanted to slot a flair player into midfield, we’d have to overhaul the way we play. At the moment, it’s very successful.

Southampton, I’d agree. West Ham really could have gone either way. We were the width of the crossbar and Ronald losing his bearings away from a point. Very even game.

We’re attacking hard down the wings, which is something fans have been calling for for years. Yeo and Opoku run at players, we know how attacking Tymon is, whether it’s Lissah or Key on the right, they both love to get forward too.

I’m not convinced we’d have such a good defensive record if we played a luxury midfielder as well. There has to be some kind of balance between defence and attack.

I’ve said plenty of times though, we really should have a game changing midfielder on the bench.

Currently I would say our game changing midfielder on the bench is Eom, we should just play him more central.

Wouldn’t disagree with that.

I think he’d find it much tougher in the middle, but if we’re chasing the game it’s between Eoms guile and Widdells aggression running at people.

Only caveat is I’d be trying to find a way to start him, I think he’s one of our best players, just unfortunate to be competing with Yeo.

This may annoy some on here but it’s a fact unfortunately. The one thing I’d say is that last year we almost certainly wouldn’t have beaten all those bottom teams.

Those who are happy with their lot and burying their heads in the sand on the premise that we are the best team in the league will soon be disappointed unless we start developing our play and specifically our attack.

How about just let people enjoy themselves with tbe fact that we are still top.

We are top because we are solid at the back, we have conceded the least amount of goals in our division.

Yes we havent beaten soton or west ham but we werent disgraced in either game and we have come from behind in 3 games, 2 of them away and beaten millwall away.

I expect us to drop down a few places before the end of the year but I will be surprised if we arent in the play offs at the end of the season.

Let's just enjoy the ride.

There will always be a handful of natural pessimists who just can’t help looking for negatives.

Two losses in eleven games. It seems fairly obvious to me that Matos has sacrificed a flair player in the middle in favour of a solid midfield that protects the defence and is still capable of putting some fantastic moves together.

Result - we’ve conceded less goals and picked up more points than anyone. Its not as if we’re playing dour football either.

This forum is like the public in general, some people are naturally optimistic (me) and some are naturally pessimistic.

When it comes to the swans, as i have supported us for almost 50 years I have seen quite a bit of ups and downs, mostly downs.

As we have started so well I have been bristling inside but I know that this could end soon but I am enjoying the ride.

What makes me confident is we have a manager who has a fairly strong squad and hes an upbeat, positive, confident man who has got every player working for each other, he has imo got the squad punching above its position, thats why I think we should finish in the play offs.

If we dont it wont be the end of my world, I will still keep supporting us like I have done for over 48 years.

To me, it doesn’t look like it’s going to end soon. We had a great season under Steve Cooper, but it felt like we really rode our luck and had more points than we deserved early on. This feels different.

Yes, we may not finish top two and we will have a bumpy run at some point, but we are going to be challenging all season.

The only thing that concerns me is a bigger club coming in for Matos.

I don't disagree but our owners are going "all in" in my opinion and surely this will reap rewards.

It’s not pessimism for the sake of it I can assure you.

Personally, I want us to get better because as a person that’s what I strive for. No resting on laurels, enjoying the ride knowing it could end at any moment. I want us to identify the issue=es which will prevent that from happening and to think we are the finished article at the moment would be wrong.

I can be certain that without improvement in certain areas we will slip down. You’ve alluded to the fact yourself and the one way in which we can give us a fighting chance is by upping our Xg. And of course converting the chances. WHU are scoring for fun and yes I know the resources they have at hand but if we want to go up top 2 we are going to have to be close to them.

I watched Cardiff the other day and it pains me to say it but they get the ball into areas where they can score. They put 5 past Watford (?) which we wouldn’t have done. We didn’t!

The points I’m making I believe are fair criticism because the evidence is plain to see. This needn’t be an optimist v pessimist argument because it’s not. And all agreeing we are doing well without considering the provisos as mentioned above are not looking at the whole picture.

Remember under Cooper, we had Fulton, Corey Smith and Grimes and defensively we were solidbut lacked a cutting edge, didn't we get to the playoff semisthe following year we had Gallagher instead of Smith and had a fine start to the season, we lost Gallagher and had Hourihane instead while we got to the final we lacked an energy or dynamic in the midfield which mean we struggled to link the play to the forwards.
Do think we have enough in the midfield to link with the forwards all about the mindset it should be a case we fear no-one which has been prevalent this season

I think Eustaquio is the player to be the link man and he can do it well.

I think you’re one of the best posters on here, but that paragraph about Cardiff is pessimism personified.

Putting aside they probably won’t put five past anyone else all season and up until then had scored less and conceded far more than us, it would be easy to score more goals, but then we’d have to accept conceding more as well and almost certainly wouldn’t be top.

West Ham have scored a lot and to be fair, they were sublime against Wrexham. Lincoln playing over an hour with nine men skews it a bit though.

Looking at the whole picture is sensible, but to do that, I believe you need to acknowledge how many Cardiff concede and where they are in the table, rather than cherry picking the one game they ran riot.

I thought hexwas going to be played in that central role rather than more to the left, more than happy to players in the midfield being given licence to wander same as full back going forward but there has to be adequate cover when their search for that open space that will hurt teams takes them out of their position. I do worry that a high press if done wrong drags midfielders forward leaving gaps that if we don't press as a team gives opposition players time on the ball to pick their passes.

Yes, fair but I thought the shock treatment would illustrate my point better🤣.

Of course it’s all about balance but we have to get forward and create more chances. I think we would all agree on that if we wish to maintain any realistic expectations of autos. We could make top 8 with current goal rate but that will leave a lot in the lap of the Gods.

Matos does like his midfield players to drift wide, you see it with Fulton and Stamenic. Often they are there to cover wide players, including Tymon cutting inside.

I do agree we need to score more goals, whether that’s being more clinical or creating more chances.

I wouldn’t sacrifice our defensive resolve for it though. That’s essentially what people need to consider when asking for a flair player.

You perfect described why we are where we are, because of our defensive set up.

Plus you said that you dont think that it will change and we will be thereabouts, which i agree with.

I also agree with you saying that if we sacrificed our defensive set up to try and score more goals we would likely concede more.

Then people would have something else to moan about.

My only gripe is when we win the ball back lets say on the halfway our players aren't looking at getting the ball forward quick enough, the ball winners should be looking up to see who to pass to in a forward position and the attackers should be looking for space for the ball winner to pass to.

Imo the players are still, after 11 games, getting used to each other on matchdays, I believe we are going to get better, but thats the optimist in me 🤷

Difference in defence between, gaining points or losing them.
Seem to remember at times, Martin and Williams had no problem with our defensive setup because more often than not we didn't seem to have one.

It’s pointless and frustrating dominating possession yet losing
Nothing upsets fans more
We had two gilt edged chances and blew them

That would have kept our points lead and shut the arrogant ammers up

We are kicking arse and no longer alsorans and we need as a fan base to front up to the self styled “big” clubs”

We are on the verge of great things and aspirations are higher

And quite right too

And that’s all it came down to really. Missed chances, a possible red card not given at the end of the first half and West Ham manipulating the head injury rule to stop our momentum. They had a spell early in the second half where they could have killed us off. Outside of that, we created the better chances.

Southampton, I’ll accept were better than us.
