25% of the season gone this weekend: Swans injuries & fixtures that matter 22nd Oct 2026 20:36
On-loan teenage ‘sensation’ — not our words — Jeremy Monga will travel with the squad tomorrow as the Swans make the relatively short journey (well, it’s one road, ish) to Shepherd’s Bush to take on QPR at Loftus Road. The news we have is that Jeremy Monga could well make the bench after knuckling down in training over the past week or so. 1

Swansea City: Lawrence Vigouroux; Filip Lissah, Ben Cabango (captain), Stephen Welsh, Josh Tymon; Marko Stamenic, Stephen Eustaquio, Elijah Just; Joseph Opoku, Melker Widell, Adam Idah.

Substitutes: Andy Fisher, Jenson Seelt, Jay Fulton, Žan Vipotnik, Jisung Eom, Tom Iorpenda, Goncalo Franco, Tiago Parente, Ross Stewart.

Vítor Matos looked as drowned as his side were on the pitch after the 5–0 drubbing at Loftus Road. There was little he could say beyond promising to look back at the game and analyse what went wrong. He has a week to manage that after a day out in W12 ended after fifteen minutes. 0

They lost heavily to Birmingham on Saturday so do they bounce back or are they on a bad run?

It’s up there so I’m not hopeful of a win but a draw may be possible. Depends on our ‘bouncebackability’ and theirs of course.

The 4th best defence in the league against the best defence in the league, This has got 0-0 written all over it. A win and we stay top, a draw could drop us to 3rd while a loss could drop us to 6th if West Brom and Wolves fill their boots. I'll go for a draw. After that we'll beat Blackburn at home and Portsmouth away. Then SkySports have to put us as the main game more often!

It’s the first I’ve said about the West Ham game but we deserved something out of it a point at least. So hopefully Matos has got the message into them that they have every chance of beating QPR just not if we show them as much respect as we did WHU.

My first comments about the WHam game as well. Really disappointed in the result. Ronald played very well and liked that Matos trusted him to play as Lissah's replacement. Stamenic and Fulton didn't play well; Welsh had a mediocre game. Big Ben should've scored...maybe twice! Vig kept us from losing by more than one goal.

If Swans play with the same amount of caution against QPR as they did againts WHam, then a DRAW is the probable outcome. I think Matos learned a lesson and will allow his team to play more openly. It's time for Swans to start raining crosses, decent crosses, into the box. Expect Eom to start. Lissah to start. Would love to see Matos start both Idah and Vip. QPR 1-2 Swans.

On the face of it a tricky away fixture so I wouldn't be amazed to see a Fulton/Stamenic pairing if there are any lingering doubts about Eustaquio's fitness.

I do think we need to start showing a bit more ambition and pace going forward in general though just to get us in the habit of doing so. Once the cautious mindset settles in it can be hard to shift it, and we've been a bit too slow/passive too often.

If we've got serious ambitions of a top two place, we need to start seeing a bit of swagger about our play. We've only had glimpses so far.

To add to that and this is far more fact than opinion, if we are to go up top 2 we MUST score more goals. There just aren’t enough hitting the net at the moment.

Of course, theoretically we could win all remaining games 1-0 and that would see us up, goals wouldn’t matter. But that’s not going to happen.

We really have to get into the box more and start creating and then taking more chances.

Indeed, and more shots on target would help. Look at our home form. No shots on target against Birmingham in the Carabao Cup, none against Sheff Utd, none against West Ham and none until the 83rd minute against Wrexham. That's the easy bit, identifying the problem.
The hard part is fixing it. Better set pieces? Faster breaks out of defence before they get organised? Do we have a player who can open up defences with a telling pass? Answers on a postcard please!

We have added the ability to break quickly this season as we saw in the early games mainly through Eom and Yeo, since Eom has been on the bench we seem to have lost our ambition to counter quickly with the exception of Yeo.

The other factor in recent games resulting in a lack of urgency going forward (just my opinion) has been the switch of partnership from Lissa & Welsh to Cabango & Welsh. This is not directed in a negative way as Cabango has been defending well, however he seems to be the one always taking the ball from Vig in recent games and cannot or will not try to beat the press which gives teams time to settle and the old sideways 'to me, to you' routine.

I would prefer Welsh to play the 'quarterback' role more as I do think he is more attacking minded and more effective getting the ball forward into the midfield. Cabango has done nothing to deserve the axe but if we do want to counter quickly he unfortunately does not possess the tools required. I hope Matos continues to rotate the team based on the opposition as he has done recently.

Cabango, Seelt vs the big boys.
Welsh & Lissa vs the rest.

We are better at solving problems this season for sure using the full squad, its important Matos keeps things fresh, if this means being ruthless to adapt to the opposition then I hope he makes that call as there are lots of different styles to adapt to in this league.

Getting more service into and around the box would certainly help Vipotnik. I've been a little disappointed with some of the stick he's been taking as we've certainly not been playing to his strengths this season. It's a repeat of 24/25 where he's taking flack for things beyond his control. Dragging him to the flanks is wasting his time as much as it suits Idah.

I just think we just need to be a bit quicker and more decisive in what we do. Getting the ball forward faster is only going to help us slice through defences. It'll give Yeo and Opuku (or whoever) more space to operate.

I also certainly believe that we're long past time where Eom should have a chance centrally. His willingness to pick a pass or have a shot would be an upgrade on what we've mostly had so far.

Interestingly, they are keeping the lower tier for home fans this season. I would imagine as the top team in the league is coming they will sell out that area.

Apparently a lot have. Hands kept in their pockets perhaps.

Been to Loftus Road for more games than I can remember and I find it to be one of my least favourite to visit. Back in the day I even drank in the Springbok? pub which then allowed away fans in....I want a 2 nil win just to make me happy!

I think West Ham as per a number of teams are now playing a cautious game against us allowing us the ball deep, making it hard to get through the midfield, attacked with the long ball, changed tactics when we felt comfortable on the ball.
Their defensive strategy made us less willing to play through the middle to risk the pass resulting in the slower changes to the point of our attacks, when we had to risk it after conceding we upped the pace that we moved the ball, got closer to opposition players, that is harder to do against better teams but as we have seen we have been able to turn games around because of the quality of our squad, we are able to create chances to score goals to win games.
I think that as per a number of seasons back, we went on a good run, using Paterson, Platino to support Grimes giving us a better attacking feel but the played Leicester and tried to use those players in a more defensive setup and got beat, a young Patino got scapegoat didn't play for quite a while then came back against Birmingham and yes he did make a mistake for the goal but we did looked a well balanced team. As for the Stamenic, Fulton partnership against West Ham again we played them and as a team too cautiously until we conceded the goal, then we were able to build pressure on West Ham, for me we didn't exert enough pressure on them, we were far too passive too afraid to play through the middle, even after bringing on Vipotnik to go alongside Idah we played through crowded wings and left spaces in the middle and didn't really support our front men it took the presences of Cabango to pick up the loose ball.
We have seen that Fulton and Stamenic create things through the middle just think there needs to be better communication for them to turn and let them know when they cannot, better players don't needed to be told as often but even then they can be caught on the ball if they don't move it quick enough. Yes you need to be cautious but we have players who can hurt team why wouldn't you eneavour to get the ball up to them in space as often as you can?.

Queens Park Rangers V Swansea City : Match Thread on 08:40 - Oct 22 with 4091 viewsDr_Winston

I would always, ALWAYS have a creative presence in the middle. If four defenders plus at least one additional midfielder isn't enough defensive strength then you're doing things wrong.

I often hark back to our last promotion season. Sinclair's goals kept us there or thereabouts, but the addition of Stephen Dobbie into proceedings instead of playing what had previously been a fairly flat midfield (not dissimilar to us now) just transformed us as a side to the point where we possibly could have gone up automatically had Rodgers done it three months sooner.

Managers, especially modern ones, sometimes obsess over their systems to the point where they stop considering whether making changes might actually make us better. That's my only real concern with Matos.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

One narrow defeat against the biggest team in the championship and people seem to have forgotten there are 23 teams who would swap places with us. Is this our best start ever?

Yes, you could replace say Fulton with someone like Walta, but then he’d have to match Fultons work rate, aggression and positional awareness for the system to work. If we had someone who could bring all that plus creativity, he’d be starting every game.

Not just workrate he wouldn't match Fultons hight when defending set plays, there is a reason Matos picked Seelt, Stamenic and Fulton against Millwall.

Im obviously missing something about Walta, I was at the Charlton game and tjough he is good in the ball I didnt see him as being stand out "creative".
Yes he scored a worldie free kick but otherwise ?
To be surr I habe watched the whole secomd half twicenover as Walta came on at 46 minutes, apart from a long range shot and his free kick therenis kot much evidence of creativity.
But then that is just my opinion.

We’re attacking hard down the wings, which is something fans have been calling for for years. Yeo and Opoku run at players, we know how attacking Tymon is, whether it’s Lissah or Key on the right, they both love to get forward too.

I’m not convinced we’d have such a good defensive record if we played a luxury midfielder as well. There has to be some kind of balance between defence and attack.

I’ve said plenty of times though, we really should have a game changing midfielder on the bench.

Yes, we've had a good start. Admiration of it should be tempered with the acknowledgement of who we've played. Of our seven wins, four have come against teams currently in the bottom five. Three of those were at home. The fixtures have been kind.

If we want to stay where we are then we need to do better against other teams likely to be at the top end. We've barely laid a glove on either West Ham or Southampton and mustered up a grand total of four shots on target in 180 minutes of football against average Sheff Utd and Wrexham teams at home. Teams we might have managed to open up with a bit more emphasis on creativity.

I'm really not sure why it's so verboten to be looking at areas for improvement. We have to create more chances, especially against better organised opposition. If we don't then we're not going to stay top for long.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
