🚨 James McClean has come out with one of the most embarrassing takes on men's mental health you'll hear from a former professional footballer.

The former Republic of Ireland international has labelled men who speak to therapists as "weak".

"To be honest with you I feel like it’s ... So I was back at my [parents’] house a week ago and I heard a voice upstairs, and it was my brother on a call to the club psychologist, having a lovely chat.

"A lot of the players speak to him, and for me that's just weak. As a man, I see that as weakness."

He then added:

"I don't need to open up. I see it as a weakness that I'd have to speak to someone about my feelings, my emotions."

Absolutely disgraceful attitude.

For years, we've been encouraging men to speak up, seek support and stop suffering in silence. Then along comes someone with a public platform telling them that asking for help makes them less of a man.

Imagine having the courage to look after your mental health, only for your own family member to use it as an example of weakness.

There's nothing tough, brave or admirable about mocking someone for getting help.

Real strength is recognising when you're struggling and doing something about it.

McClean is entitled to his own views (and frequently expresses them), but using his platform to shame men who seek support is ignorant, irresponsible and potentially damaging.

It's exactly this outdated mentality that makes so many men afraid to speak up in the first place.

His brother deserves praise for looking after himself, not ridicule.

And James McClean should seriously have a think about the message he's sending to young men who look up to footballers.

Seeking help isn't weakness. Shaming people for seeking it is shameful.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

He's not the brightest of buttons is he ...?

He's learnt nothing from his past ill-judged utterances.

The thing is, enough will.

The sooner mental health is seen as any other physical illness the better. People may deal with it differently but to make people seem weak in this guy’s fantasy butch world is so destructive.

He needs to be taken to task. Yes, that’s a metaphor!😡

The career path for young footballers is mentally demanding, I could give you details of a few cases where moving hundreds of miles from home in their early teens has proved very problematic.
McClean providing more evidence that he is absolutely clueless.

Read the story on the BBC sport app.

His wife has disagreed with his view and stated he is going through a rough patch in his life.

Looks like he needs help which is quite ironic.

He’s an odd one and I’m sure his wife knows him better than anyone.

Tribalism wins just as it did with Eom’s issue at Millwall. People support what they support without thought as to the issue.

We had hundreds of X replies from Millwall fans over the Eom issue. Not one stated anything about his wellbeing, just defended their club. So called Irish Republicans will do the same with McClean.

It’s the way it is.

His rough patch seems to have lasted around twenty years so far. He’s always been a weird angry little man.

I'd say a few as with the Scots .Blowing up things wasn't just the preserve of the Irish.
