| Corbyn and free speech 09:52 - Oct 12 with 669 views | onehunglow | Piers yesterday in Cardiff with a megaphone basically bellowing that the virus and everything associated with it is a con. This is "free speech". This is one reason I am against it ,if that is the case. You cannot have "free " speech ,ever,in a civilised society as it simply gives a licence to cause offence and all sorts of mayhem. Its why we have laws that basically try to stop it. It works both ways ,left and right. | |

Surely that’s the point. He has the right to express his opinion then people of the opposing view can say no Piers you’re wrong and this is why. Banning opinion never leads to anything positive.

There are lines that need to be drawn and therefore total freedom to express what you feel and to encourage others to do so is why we have laws-and rightly so.

You can’t even express your opinion on here anymore without it being removed. Very interesting.

I wouldn’t encourage it no but discussion of controversial topics is much better out in the public domain rather than on some corner of the dark web.

“Those who are determined to be ‘offended’ will discover a provocation somewhere. We cannot possibly adjust enough to please the fanatics, and it’s degrading to make the attempt.” That’s Christopher Hitchens. He knew, didn’t he?

Of course he did. We all knew. We’ve seen this coming for years if not decades. Here’s another one that I agree with wholeheartedly: “It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so (Removed by administrator)ing what?”

Surely it is better to let him have his rant and then declare him wrong, a crank, deluded by explaining why he is wrong. You do realise he is not alone there are literally thousands, if not millions of like minded individuals. It does not make them right, but they may be factually correct on some of their claims. Free speech helps to keep people free. [Post edited 12 Oct 2020 14:46]

I doubt you’ll find a lot of people who will agree with him that this virus is a hoax or it’s caused by 5g or Huwawei or any of that other bollocks but people will be increasingly sympathetic to his campaign to repeal the coronavirus act. I’ve mentioned before about my gran being effectively imprisoned lying in bed for 8 months on her own with no family visits or any quality of life. The carers don’t spend any time with her. It makes me very very angry.

He has so many "beliefs" that there are many groups who believe that bits of it are true. As you say I doubt they all believe all of them. I am gutted for you, your family and your mum. It is literally a national disgrace that in 6 months they could not organise a way to make it happen for all of you in that position. It just reflects everything else going on around COVID, a total shambles.

| Corbyn and free speech on 18:13 - Oct 12 with 453 views | Catullus | To paraphrase, I disagree with what you say but will fight to the death for your right to say it. Isn' that the best way to go? If we outlaw, criminalise or ban certain beliefs al we do is drive those people underground and that's surely more dangerous? Isn't it better to know who these people are? | |
