It is surely not a big thing. If it does, then great.I 'll take advice from scientist rather than thoe who think they know better. We are facing social catastrophe and we need to wise up. We haven't done so yet and it's why this is spreading still.
I can’t recall them ever being marketed as being able to 100% prevent people getting the virus. More of a prevention surely. Also, not every person wears a mask 100% of the time - kids for example. Unless I’m missing something here.

They were marketed as a way of preventing the spread by limiting the amount of virus you personally expel by up to 80%.
They don't give you much protection personally but are more of a preventative for those around you, in shops etc.
That is an excellent question. According to the world's most experienced Pandemic team leader in South Korea, who now has experience of 3 epidemics SARS, MERS and COVID says they are essential, along with gloves or extensive hand washing and Glasses. The evidence that most strongly suggests that they work, apart from most Asian countries using them is Czechia. During the first European wave they instigated social distancing and the 100% use of home made masks for the general public. They had among the lowest infections and deaths in Europe,. In May they were 53rd worst in the world with only 940 cases/million and 31 deaths/million . However in the summer they didn't want to wear masks and relaxed their other rules as well. The 100% use of Face masks was not re-introduced and they have paid the penalty, they are now the worst of all countries over 1 million population for cases/million (58,231/million) & 7th for deaths/million (964/million).
But the health professionals have always made it quite clear that you have to wear and handle them properly & carefully.
Since the beggining I have worn Gloves, a Mask & Glasses when shopping regardless of the number of cases.
I have always had serious doubts as to how much use they are. I suspect they are very useful worn in close environments for longer periods but not for shops with fleeting contact or outdoors when passing people.
My view is the key issue is keeping proper social distancing rather than masks.
Wearing them on buses is certainly adviseable and I cannot see why children arent wearing them in classrooms where they are next to someone for hours but are being used in corridors where there is fleeting contact or in yards.
The evidence is that cases have hugely increased since the rules have been brought in to make wearing them compulsory.
I wear one and most people I see out in shops are wearing them.
I bought a cheap fabric facemask online, I guess it was obviously not of type worn by hospital staff cos when I put it under a florescent light I could see thousands of little holes. Yep some protection and better that nothing e.g. stopping someone from touching their mouth.
You cant see the Covid virus cos it can only been seen under the most powerful/high-tec laboratory kit, 100 million can fit on a pin head apparently, unlike extremely visible holes in some masks that the virus can more than obviously escape through.
I binned the substandard cr@p and re-ordered some N95's at a then extortionate price. I think higher standard masks of regulated standard that are replaced regularly and both fitted correctly and taken off correctly are far better.
Lets be honest here wearing a sh1te mask like the sh1te one I mentioned must be akin to a MotorGP motorcyclist doing 200mph wearing one of those party hats you pull out of a Christmas cracker.
You don't need to, nor should you wear gloves. How often are you washing or changing your gloves?
Just wash your hands frequently.
Speak to any expert in infection control, they will tell you the same.
We have never worn gloves but do just what you have said. We actually carry small bottles of hand sanitiser when out and use the shops on the way in and use our own when back at the car.
We have 3 facemasks each, one in use, one washed and drying and a spare.
There's nothing special about a face mask, it's just a barrier. Any barrier will cut down on viral loads expelled or inhaled. If there are 2 ppl facing each other wearing them and one sneezes or cough, the chances of transmitting and the distance will be very small, it's a similar process to double glazing.
The virus doesn't hang around in the air for very long, and if it does the load will be very small.Face to face contact ,breathing, talking, shouting or spitting is what really passes the virus on

So, do you wash your hands after handling the goods in a shop when you place them in your basket or trolley? Do you wash them after taking them out before handling the bag? Do you wash or wipe your wallet & credit/debit/store cards after touching them? Do you wash them before touching anything else, car door handles, car keys, inside the car? Do you wash them again after unloading the shopping before touching anything indoors? Do you at any time touch your face when shopping? Do you wash your face when you get home, because "just washing your hands" is not good enough if the virus is on your face.
The advantage of gloves is that you handle everything up to placing the shopping in the boot and then take them off before handling anything on or in the car. You then wear them to transfer the shopping indoors, take them off after washing them and put them back in the car. After putting all the washing away wash hands and face.
You do it your way and the so called UK expert's way.
I will do it the South Korean way thank you very much
Why don’t people put them in the bin when they’ve finished with them? I’ve just been for a stroll down to and along the beach and the ground is littered with them.

The virus will always be able to get through any mask. The mask always has tiny holes in it otherwise you’d suffocate. The theory is the mask will catch any droplets or mucus expelled when a person coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can be expelled quite far and if they settle on a surface the virus can survive longer as it’s protected by the mucus. You’re probably wasting your money on more expensive masks. The most important thing is distancing. It always has been. Masks give people a false sense of security. There are people out there who genuinely believe that if everyone wears masks they are 100% safe, that’s when distancing doesn’t happen. Without distancing we are still breathing all over each other.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

My N95 masks are a bit more expensive, but fit much better than cheap ones with a proper nose bridge adjuster, as I can afford it, why should I care if it is slightly more expensive? They are re-usable when worn for short periods, I wear mine once a week for about 20 minutes for a local Coop shop and once a month for 45 minutes for a Tesco shop. I leave it on the car dashboard so that the UV can get to it to kill anything on it in between. Eventually it is disposed of in the dustbin waste.

Apparently the more expensive certain masks are the more there is a lessening of the viral load i.e. that is why medical professionals wear the next model up from a N95.
The N95 gives higher protection than an average cloth mask, the Covid ward surgical standard FFP3 even higher again. That means a difference between the likelihood of being infected by the virus, illness severity and potential infection spread.
The cloth one I mentioned was of extremely poor quality with lesser weave quality/density and full of holes where I could easily see a household light in rather too defined and visible quality. Hardly the safest of purchase options IMO.

Medical professionals are often working with people who are already sick, have weakened immune systems or open wounds. It’s to protect against bacterial infection more than viral as that is a far bigger threat to health in those circumstances.

Any barrier will do, as we constantly move around and even a larger sized filter will do the job as it will catch most of the viral load as we move or even fidget. A triple layer mask will work as the holes in the layers won't line up like a swiss cheese model does, unless we are very unlucky.

Why did all the experts etc say early on that masks don’t work and are not needed, see video above?

They didn’t say they don’t work. They said they give people a false sense of security so they won’t distance anymore. Which is exactly what has happened.

No idea why they said that, they obviously haven't studied history. Mask, distancing and quarantining was even used during the 1918 epidemic. Cities who brought in strict measures did better than those that didn't
