A big club needs a crowd of more than 5000 for an FA Cup tie also you would have thought a big club would have had more than 2 seasons in the PL both of which were pretty pathetic really.
But in fairness they did win the FA Cuppp back in the day even if it was only 10 years after the Russian revolution.

Not sure if this is a genuine question but I’ll bite - always depends on your scope but if we talk UK then for me there are 7 big clubs - Man City & United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea plus Celtic & Rangers from Scotland.
All tick the fan base, history, expect to win trophies most seasons, consistently competitive etc etc.
Spurs & maybe Leicester fans will kick off but they are a decent way short of those 7 - despite the occasional decent season or two. | | | |

Wasn't all that long ago Chelsea were pulling in 18-20,000 crowds. They've been relatively successful due to Bates' debt and Abramovich's cash, but I don't know if I'd put them ahead of Spurs or even Everton for size. |  |

This is the way I see it, it’s a pretty basic way of seeing it but there you go.
What would happen if a club ever fell on hard times, Leeds probably being the best example of this, what would happen. Leeds still had supporters clubs all over the UK filling out away ends up and down the country. Everton, who Cardiff fans compare themselves too would do exactly the same, as would the obvious ones United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle, West Ham.

Think for me it depends on what would happen if they dropped a division or two, like Man City did.
Citeh still pulled in crowds of 30,000+. I suspect Spurs would too. Everton you could quibble about but I reckon the fanbase is pretty loyal. I'd be surprised if Chelsea did. | |

Problem with using fan base as a key measure is you then cannot exclude Celtic & Rangers - agree Everton’s history is huge but most of it is just that, every time they look like building a side that just might win something they fall over again (plus they’ve actually won less than you might think - both Chelsea & Spurs have won more).
Villa slightly more interesting but not dissimilar to Everton for me.
To avoid the Scottish pub league debate I’ll stick to England so now we are down to 3 - Man U, Liverpool & Arsenal. | | | |
