Taxi driver 'locked suicide bomber in his car after spotting explosives' before blast ripped through the car outside Liverpool maternity hospital seconds before Poppy Day silence, killing the cab passenger - as anti-terror police arrest three in raids
- Taxi driver apparently locked a suicide bomber in his car after spotting he was carrying explosives on Sunday - Three men were later arrested as part of a terror probe after a taxi pulled up and then exploded in Liverpool - One person died, one injured in explosion reported at 10:59am, seconds before 11am Remembrance silence - Armed police officers swarmed Boaler Street in Kensington, Liverpool where they arrested the three suspects - Armed police also sealed off Rutland Avenue near Sefton Park in a raid thought to be part of the terror probe
A taxi driver apparently locked a suicide bomber in his car after spotting explosives before a blast ripped through the vehicle outside a maternity hospital in Liverpool on Sunday.
The explosion, reported at 10:59am, came moments before the nation fell silent to mark Remembrance Day and killed the cab passenger and injured the driver, named locally as David Perry.
The car passenger, a man, was declared dead at the scene and is yet to be formally identified. Perry injured and was tonight being treated for burns and shrapnel injuries which police said are 'not life threatening'.
The incident took place as a remembrance service involving scores of military personnel, veterans and civic dignitaries, was happening at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral less than a mile away.
A close friend of Perry's told MailOnline the family believe the original target was the Remembrance service: 'The passenger asked David to go to the cathedral so we believe that was the intended target. But they got stuck in heavy traffic so the passenger asked to go to the hospital instead.'
Unconfirmed reports on social media suggested Perry averted disaster by locking his passenger inside. Stephen Thomas said online: 'The taxi driver is my mate, and he spotted the passenger acting suspicious. He's in hospital, luckily he escaped just before but he did suffer some injuries.'
Looking from the outside in it appears as if the security services dropped the ball on this. The fact that there was a round up within hours tells me that, once again, ‘the suspects were known to the authorities.’
Also the fact that the terrorist apparently asked to be taken to a maternity hospital as he had run out of time to reach the original target tells you the level of sub-humanity we are dealing with.
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

they think the detonator went off and not the main bomb
Looking at the images the shell of the taxi it doesn't appear to be distorted so possibly It may have been an incendiary device or as you say the devices detonator discharging, causing the fire . Nice people

Sharing of information will also continue to be a problem with the seemingly poor recruitment of a very few by the police. It must be hard for MI5 etc to information share when there is a weakness in individual police forces recruitment policy as we have seen of late.
It’s an odd target for sure even with a change of mind.

Easy location to reach from the areas of the arrests, pretty open access to the Women's.

The other factor is the scale of the problem, Keith. The security services have finite resources and they are having to deal with way too many balls to competently juggle.
The targeting of a maternity unit? It’s too horrific to contemplate.

I read an article a while back that suggested there may be as many as 50,000 “persons of interest” on this watch list. You can’t keep tabs on all of them at the same time. And it’s only going to get worse as far as I can see.

The chap deserves The George Cross. If it wasn’t for his quick thinking the consequences don’t bear thinking about.
Lost his ear and suffered other serious injuries but really should've lost his life in an explosion like that, miracle he's out of hospital already. To plan to commit such a beyond horrific act on 11:00 on remembrance day is despicable.
If there's ever a reason for a knighthood..

To put that figure into some sort of context it’s slightly higher than the combined total of allied infantry Wellington commanded at Waterloo.

"He picked up the passenger who initially asked to be dropped off at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral which is half a mile from the hospital.
A Remembrance Sunday parade had just ended and a memorial event featuring thousands of servicemen, veterans and dignitaries was being held at the church.
But the source claimed the route had to be changed due to road closures so the man asked to be dropped off at the centre centre before Mr Perry became suspicious as they drove past the hospital.
They said Mr Perry noticed "some kind of light attached to his clothing" and the man was "messing around with it" which is when he jumped out of his car and locked the passenger in the back of the vehicle. "
Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

He did not "jump out of the car and lock the door". The video clearly shows the explosion before he got out of the car.

I thought exactly the same,if true far from hero driving to an entrance of a hospital where women and children were, should gone somewhere else..
I suppose you have years of experience in reacting to similar incidents ? There's more than one way to lock /unlock a vehicle without actually putting a key into a lock

Whatever the situation angry s attitude oversees all.
This taxi driver saved many lives
Police have done a terrific job. They are still doing it while angryjack sits on his sofa in blissful ,safe comfort . He s lucky Police and the other emergency workers are there for him whether he hates them or not.
Liverpool ,being the great city it is,will pull together and look after this taxi driver .

It is at its best in adversity
No mention from two posters about the guy who died as to why he died , just that someone ( not necessary the driver himself ) stated he locked the vehicle before the device went off and their sad frenzied attempt to discredit the driver. Pretty shameful
