Grimes to Forest? 08:42 - Jun 10 with 2803 viewsBrynmill_Jack

Nothing on the rumour mill so I thought a good topic for discussion. He was the first name on Cooper's team sheet and was his club captain. 5 million would probably do it ?

we supposedly turned down that last summer with a year left on his contract, i'd expect us to want double that to consider selling hi. Whether he's worth 10m is a different topic

Poll: Expectation for the season

Personally I think it would take an offer of £8-10M for him to go. This would depend on Joe coming or Downes going. A lot of iffs and buts this summer.

In the current market we would be lucky to get 3 million for him. He's just an average Championship player. You can pick up hundreds of Matt Grimes on the free market.

Even when you know, you never know?

As maligned as he is by some, he is the type of player fans seem to underrate for some reason. Not until he is gone would people appreciate how much work he gets through or how good he is.

Midfielders who create so little or score so few rarely go for big fees. Who would replace him, an aging & slow Joe Allen who also scores or creates very little ?

Like it or not he is integral to the game that Martin wants to play.

Club captain played almost every game by our last 3 managers, but is somehow average.

And your last paragraph is key.Our problem is we have a manager that sees him as the fulcrum of his team.
Grimes is the root of our so slow play;that which Russ adheres to.

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Completely disagree with this. He is an excellent championship standard player and worth far more than £3 m even in todays market.

All about opinions.
Some see a player with no pace,no physicality,no great tackling prowess and a dead ball "specialist" who isn't really.
And a captain he aint

I don't have any issue with him not scoring a hatful or getting lots of assists. My issue is that he is supposed to be our "heartbeat" - he doesn't get us on the front foot anywhere near enough. Three yard passes towards our goal aren't cutting it for me sorry. I wotilxnt mind trying him further forward but for me he's just occupying a shirt that could be better worn by someone else.

Exactly.
Made captain by Cooper who some believe is the messiah, but when RM uses him as captain and plays him every game he is questioned. Go figure.

I didn’t rate him playing under Cooper either, for the same reasons as I stated above. I’m hopeful Cooper will now have the funds available to secure his number one player here.

Cooper has an awful lot of strengthening to do. A lot of the team he got promoted with were loan players. There’s a limit of loans in the premier league. He won’t be able to rely so heavily on loans like he has in the last 3 years.

I get as frustrated as his most ardent critics at times with those backward passes. However there is quality in there. He holds the ball well, keeps possession, good first touch & wins his fair share of duels by reading the game. Having him, Korey Smith & Downes on the field all at the same time didn’t help any of them. It does make me wonder why Potter, Cooper & Martin have all been happy with such negative play.

I just think that he will not command a big fee as he is not creative enough & many will say that is not his role. The problem is that we lack creativity in the central & attacking midfield options that we have & that accentuates his negativity. He is our player & he signed a new contract so was clearly happy to stay, he should get our support as long as he wears the jersey

There’s a few million pounds in there, especially with a lengthy contract to go.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of him.

I don’t think any deal will depend on Joe coming back or Downes going, with a potential £23m hole in the bank I think he’d be offski as would Downes for a decent offer.

I think I want my players to more than just “wear the jersey”. He does that well but unlike Downes doesn’t get it dirty

What I meant was if Joe came either Grimes or Downes would need to go, probably Downes but if a big offer for Grimes came in it would be tempting. IMO we would only play two at a time and it would be unpractical to have one on the bench.

I think there is a bit of bias against Grimes to be fair and most likely plays how he is asked to. Keeps possesion and moves the ball, sits deep and concenttrates on retention rather than penetrating.
I don't seem to remember many lambasting Leon for always passing sideways and backwards. (Did the same job as Grimes albeit to a higher level).

Leon gave us go forward ball most of the time. Grimes doesn't . Also Leon would have ran through a brick wall for the club. I don't think Grimes has anywhere near that commitment.

But the stats don't even back that up both average around 30% forward passes give or take a % or two depending on the season.
I think Grimes gets a lot of stick for doing very little wrong. Was surprised he didnt leave last summer the way some of our fans treat him.

Stats can tell you anything you want them too. Leon had far more impact on games the Grimes has ever had.

Leon could tackle better , read the game better and pass better.

Selling Grimes for a good fee and losing players like Bennett and Fulton would be the best scenario if it meant keeping Piroe, Obefami and Downes.

What type of fee would we get for Grimes though, 8M?

Fulham wouldn’t have him practically for nothing and they were loaded and on their way back up. I’m struggling to think of anyone who’d want him if I’m honest.

Can't see us getting more than £2 million for him, on a good day.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.
