Cost of Living; Planes, Ferries, Restaurants etc. 12:42 - Jul 22 with 2747 viewsJACKMANANDBOY

The airports are at capacity, ferries are booked up, restaurants at full at weekends.....there's an awful lot of people with disposal income to spend.

Edit: For the benefit of those who can't read or think. My post shows the contrast between those who are struggling and for example the 100,000 passengers who fly out of the UK each day, that's 36 million a year.

These cost of living payments are arriving in people's bank accounts.

Do the government believe that some are going to use it to pay off their energy bills.

I can see civil unrest this Winter

Totally agree. Quite a few people will have paid for and then postponed their holidays for a couple of years on account of Covid and are taking them now. We’re at the early stages of economic turbulence and I suspect people want to enjoy before battening down the hatches.

Yes, but it's not sustainable, and then we will hit a recession

Absolutely 100%

When this all kicked off over 2 years ago and people were told to hide at home and have some free money for their troubles it was only going to go one way. I had to work through it all and was ironically offered loads of overtime which I smashed it to bits and told other colleagues to do the same as these days would come, I tripled my rainy day money in that time also a lot of people live totally beyond their means mortgages, CC's, bank loans none of which I have thankfully.

This shite storm hasn't even started

There was always going to be a lot of additional debt to be repaid and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has added to the trouble pushing up energy costs and it’s going to have a huge impact.

Sunak has copped some flak for increasing taxes but given what was spent during Covid it always had to happen. I’m not his biggest fan, but he’s been demonised by the Conservative press and Truss campaign who wants to reduce taxes and potentially increase the national debt further. What really concerns me is people may be putting their own self interest above the national interest.

Couple of points on this
1. Lots of people going away now actually booked and paid for the holiday before lock down, we sit in this camp.
2. Airports are running way under capacity but no longer have the staff as they left go of so many during lockdown
3. For airlines, see point 2
4. Some people have indeed decided that after two years of restrictions they want to get away

It's probably not the poorest households queuing up at airports or in restaurants.

A couple who both work full time and don't have kids won't have been vastly troubled by the price rises so far. Even a lot of families with children won't have been massively hit if both parents work. That probably makes up a decent percentage of the population.

It's the ones in low paid employment, or who can't work, or only work part time due to health or childcare reasons that are going to be battered.

As far as Sunak goes, he is right that tax cuts across the board aren't really feasible now, but a lot of the green levies on energy need to be looked at, especially as these costs are perhaps the biggest drivers of the inflationary cycle.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

There are many people in the UK who have a massive amount (to most) of disposal income. Be it from well paid jobs or inheritance. Unless the everyday person comes into contact with them they would not believe the amounts we are talking about. Life is not fair, but that is the way it is.

People spend their disposal income in different ways. Some like good clothes so will pay ex amount for a Lacoste etc. Others wouldn't dream of this but might prefer putting their money behind the bar. I listened to a guy on Radio Wales today saying he pays for himself wife and all his grown up kids private healthcare. However he said he doesn't drink.
George Best said something along the lines of ( can't remember it exactly) . ' I spend my money on Champagne, beautiful women and fast cars. The rest I waist '

The green levies on fule are pushing petrol prices up which is pushing inflation. We don't need an income tax cut or a reversal on NI increases, we need the green ley and VAT cut on fuel, that may help.

We had considerd going abroad next year, looked into it and then the fan got a plastering.

Been spending the money on the house instead,, had a plasterer in today, having a new door and windows in a few weeks then all our windows will be newish (less than 2 years old) and we had a new boiler too. Also been putting a fair bit into our savings and overpaying our gas and electric to build up a buffer though we are in a fixed rate deal until April.

How much people spend though, there's a restaurant in Cardiff that has had 70 no shows in a week costing it thousands. Airports are cjock a block but they're cancelling flights left, right and centre because they oversold and they're understaffed.

Dover was having major delays because of short staffing.

maybe some are planning on a last big bash just in case but I don't think it's that big a deal, it looks more because of the circumstances.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

The same Sunak that was part of the team dishing out millions to a VIP lane with no experience in providing PPE etc that didnt deliver? And who lost track of millions in covid related business loans.

Yes, I totally agree with your comments and have highlighted the issues previously elsewhere. The conduct of the government when it comes to the PPE looks to be well dodgy and I’m hoping there’ll be a full investigation further down the line ( but I’m not holding my breath) - I was just making the point about the Conservative press having a go at Sunak to promote Truss and her questionable economic policies. I am not keen on a Sunak, but I think he’s a safer pair of hands than Truss.

One of Sunaks wife's companies was given a £50 million PPE contract.

I’m in the exact same boat. Her favourite economist has admitted her plans could see interest rates rise to 7%, and he dismissed concerns about borrowing despite the interest on the debt hitting a record monthly expense of £19.4bn in June. The bulk of that expense is related to the increase in inflation, as roughly a quarter of our debt is made up of index linked bonds. The rest is fixed rate borrowed largely at low interest rates. I don’t like Rishi either but tackling inflation seems imperative for the public at large and for government finances. Imagine the impact on mortgages and the housing market if rates go to 7%.

Not sure about cheap, daughter is looking for a family holiday to Spain, Balearics, Canaries etc during school holidays. 3 grand plus for for 3 of them for 2 weeks in reasonable accommodation…bloody ridiculous.
