in 1999 first season with a season ticket with my mates, the ball came into the north bank down by away fans, we were losing 1-0 with about 10 mins to go so in my haste to get the ball back on the pitch i decided to boot it back. Unfortunately the ball hit the metal railings we used to stand by and rebounded smack into the face of a bloke stood behind us.
Resulting in me getting put into a headlock and having a few digs to the face before getting pulled off and calmed down.

We have been gone from the Vetch for 17 years I have lots of fond memories , I miss the old girl and would never want to to swap those times stood on the North Bank...but life moves on and maybe we need to focus on the here and now

What about about stories from the Liberty/Swansea .com

We have had some great times there too.....that semi final night V Forest for one....

I would say that there are more swans fans now that have no memory of the vetch due to their age or not supporting the club at the time than those of us that remember.

May I be so bold. These books are still on eBay etc.

The Leeds game when Ferrie got sent off, when Wolves brought 3,000, Bristol City 7-1, any Cardiff game (except the ones we lost), St Gallen, Valencia, Napoli and not forgetting Nottingham Forest, I was screaming at Pratley to take it to the corner, what did the silly sod do, score.
I Loved the big boys coming down, that boy crying behind the goal when we had beaten Man City with a Luke Moore winner but my favourite moment was Celina's goal in the cup again v Man City, pure joy, 55 years I've been following and I've not seen a better goal. Loved the Vetch but it had had its day, it was certainly time to move on.

Playing the likes of Hartlepool , Workington , Barrow etc on a wet Tuesday night with 1200 other supporters will always be good memory .

But , the Toshack revolution moved Swansea from them dark days to the top of the pile .
That era was the best .

Yep, thanks for that , it was 50 years ago!

I was given a letter not so long ago that I had written to someone about organising a bus for an away game there was a name there Edwin, that baffled the both of us, if anyone has any idea of a regular around that time 50 years ago named Edwin.

50 years.. rugger this i am heading for the wine bottle!

There followed a spate of instances of men being smashed in the face by a wet muddy leather football.

Back in the day we used to call it foreplay.

Football culture and the world has changed at lighting speed since the Vetch Field days some for the good and some for the not so good.

The majority of the time going to the Vetch Field was gritty, unfashionable and dare I say it a laugh and bit scary.

It was about growing up,learning about life, people watching, meeting your mates, being skint, having a beer in a proper pub, singing & insulting the away fans and vice versa and watching the odd win now and then and being bounced around the NB! Proper nonsense fun

It wasn't about watching penalties through a mobile phone, apps, popcorn, asking for football shirts,no smoking,no swearing,no standing, then moaning about the car park after the game...etc.

If you were not lucky enough to spend at least a few seasons at the Vetch Field you missed something special.

I really did weep when we left there because I knew a big part of my life had been lost forever but I just didn't realise how big it really was. I was 13 yrs old the first time I walked in there and 35 yrs old the last time I walked out of there ☹

I will always support The Swans but modern day football and all it brings with the new soulless stadiums full of soulless fans is not for me.

Yes thats a great post, during the Vetch years we saw sides that often featured mainly local lads....some we had played football with or against ourselves as we were growing up..

The ability to just turn up and stand in your usual spot with folks youve known for years and not having to "book" you space like todays all seater stadiums...

But that was then and this is know and for me it seems all sport not just football is becoming soulless as "its all about the money" now

Top post!

Football was far better with none of the extra rubbish we see today.

North Bank was a great place, especially going there as a young boy......things you saw and things you heard were things to make you laugh and tell the tales to your mates.

Good post, you could add to that freezing your rollocks off on a cold and freezing January in a crowd of 1.500 -2000,

The car park moan, I could tell you a tale about that one, and 10 min walk!

Brilliant post mate.

For me it was the passion and the noise the NB produced which got me hooked on the swans.

I used to count the days before every home game.

Supporting your local side, nothing better.

The comment about it being a scary experience brings back memories of me telling my late mum , I want to go to the football in Swansea , this was 1969/1970 , I was 12 then .

Arranged to catch the bus with my mate to the old bus station , Wilkinsons there now .
My mother worried all night till I got home , last bus , safe and sound , that was my initiation to the North Bank .

Alas my companion that night passed away recently and never quite got the thrill of that experience , unlike me , and with my mothers hesitant approval , continued the adventure of following the swans , also learned a lot of new swear words .
