Stories from the North Bank on 23:56 - Jul 27 by Robbie

The comment about it being a scary experience brings back memories of me telling my late mum , I want to go to the football in Swansea , this was 1969/1970 , I was 12 then .

Arranged to catch the bus with my mate to the old bus station , Wilkinsons there now .
My mother worried all night till I got home , last bus , safe and sound , that was my initiation to the North Bank .

Alas my companion that night passed away recently and never quite got the thrill of that experience , unlike me , and with my mothers hesitant approval , continued the adventure of following the swans , also learned a lot of new swear words .

Lost a few mates and family members along the way like most of us and if I could go back in time and tell them about The Premiership, Europe, The Liberty Stadium they would think I was a madman

That hits home.... Telling them about the prem, Europe and liberty and them not believing it.

Never in our wildest drams back on the North Bank woukd be believe what was to come, this is why I just shake my head with some things I read and hear about the entitlement with some of the fan base today.

Football is a cycle, this is why I am happy and understand where we are today.....imagine how all that would have been and felt cheering on from the NB. European football once again at the Vetch and singing on the NB whilst in the prem, would have been a million times better and the hairs on your kneck would have been touching the floodlights.

I have posted much which you may interpret as "entitlement" but in reality it is my expectaion of where we should be given the resources we have.

I can compare this squad with the squad we had back in League 2 after relegation from the first division and Toshack, I can look around and see the facilities and resources the club has now to what it had then we are a million miles away from those days. Football as sport in general has moved on its more about money now..

This constant acceptance of mediocrity and harking back to where we were is ridiculous...we have better resources in players, backroom staff and facilities, two I repeat two "state of the art" training facilities we no longer train on borrowed company playing fields, public park space or share the showers with members in a private health club.

I wouldnt change the old days....but we shouldnt use them as an excuse for underachieving today

Good post, you could add to that freezing your rollocks off on a cold and freezing January in a crowd of 1.500 -2000,

The car park moan, I could tell you a tale about that one, and 10 min walk!

And walking 100 yards for a light, the heated up Pastie that was always too hot to eat, the bovril that tasted like sweaty socks, getting soaked with piss when queuing for food, ruining your DMs wading into the Northbank bog, the stuff they use to call beer that didn't quite taste like anything and if you wanted a crap you could forget it. But we loved it, it was a shit 'ole but it was our shit 'ole. Swansea oh Swansea, oh city said I

It certainly was and nothing better than walking though the tunnels up to the NB especially on a night game..walking through and the sight of the pitch....

Does anyone know the Asian guy who used to stand just to the left of the right hand tunnel as you looked from the pitch. He was there from the early 80s until we moved to The Liberty. Pleasant chap, always smiling.
He would be mid eighties now if still above the ground.

The sight of the lush green grass under the floodlights on a night game at the Vetch is something , alas , I do not experience entering the Liberty , big credit to the groundsmen who looked after the pitch then .

The surface they play on now , artificial /plastic will never replicate grass .

Grass on the wings , mud in the centre circle and sand in the penalty box , do not see that on Match of the Day anymore .

I remember going to Loftus road to watch QPR play Man U (long story how it came about that I won’t go into) it was just after they had installed the first plastic pitch. MU’s keeper (Bailey I think) threw the ball out and Coppell (I think) went sprinting after it but the ball kept bouncing and picking up speed as it made its way all the way to the other end of the pitch where the QPR keeper picked it up.

Those early attempts at artificial pitches weren’t fantastic.

Early 80s, evening game v Fulham. Can't remember the score.
But I do remember a dog running onto the pitch and nobody could catch it . Game stopped for what seemed ages. You don't get that at The Liberty!

Football culture and the world has changed at lighting speed since the Vetch Field days some for the good and some for the not so good.

The majority of the time going to the Vetch Field was gritty, unfashionable and dare I say it a laugh and bit scary.

It was about growing up,learning about life, people watching, meeting your mates, being skint, having a beer in a proper pub, singing & insulting the away fans and vice versa and watching the odd win now and then and being bounced around the NB! Proper nonsense fun

It wasn't about watching penalties through a mobile phone, apps, popcorn, asking for football shirts,no smoking,no swearing,no standing, then moaning about the car park after the game...etc.

If you were not lucky enough to spend at least a few seasons at the Vetch Field you missed something special.

I really did weep when we left there because I knew a big part of my life had been lost forever but I just didn't realise how big it really was. I was 13 yrs old the first time I walked in there and 35 yrs old the last time I walked out of there ☹

I will always support The Swans but modern day football and all it brings with the new soulless stadiums full of soulless fans is not for me.

What a great post!!! Made me feel very nostalgic. Will always miss that place.

I started going there when I was 14 with my mate from school. I was hooked. Must have been 1992 or 93.
The noise was amazing there. I felt accepted. Learning the songs, going up the back and kicking the boards. It stunk of p!ss up there.

One of he best moments for me was the pitch invasion after Chester (I think) and me trying to pick up Jan Molby. Not a chance ha.

.

Some great occasions in the latter years of the vetch. Obvious highlights Hull to stay up, Derby/West Ham FA Cup, the last game against Wrexham. In addition some ‘bigger’ games at the time stand out against the no doubt mundane week to week games which have slipped the memory.

Hull home 1999 to get into the playoffs. Game delayed due to rain and the atmosphere was rocking by the time it kicked off. Seem to recall a couple of pitch invasions with fans running at the away terrace fencing.

Beating Preston in the cup early 2000’s seemed like a scalp at the time and part of a good cup run.

Teams like Millwall, Stoke, Plymouth, Bristol City (midweek Potters Wheel) bringing more than a couple of hundred away fans that was usually the norm ramped up the north bank.

Who was the original north bank drummer back around that time? Stood towards the back corner. Does he still follow?

OK i might be on my own here, the night Ossie attacked Tommy Smith. Best atmosphere ive ever witnessed on the North Bank.

The night a GK called Martin Thomas of Bristol Rovers put on one of the best GK displays ive seen.

The Tosh era, perhaps when Man U came for a friendly one night i think. Remember talking to Colin Webster and he said the night Jimmy Hadziabdic was a highlight i think Ante was playing that day as well but my memory is fading.

Josh Mahoney in the tackle Robbie crunching Curts shoulder drop my first fag..

Playing on the pitch for the first time for schoolboys etc.

And the pies.

The drummer was Clayfield from Gorseinon. I think he still follows. Sure I’ve seen him walking around the liberty with a drum.

The Man Utd friendly. I was working late and got there about 10 minutes into the game. North bank turnstiles closed, East turnstiles closed, I walked around to the stand and the gate was wide open. Walked in, got to the seats which were full. Stood in the walkway and there on my left was my old neighbour from Builth in a bloody Man Utd top. Plastic.
