The blood on the hands of the Qatar 2022 World Cup - and the rewards 18th Nov 2022 11:31
The Qatar World Cup literally kicks off in a display of glitz and glamour this weekend which will no doubt overshadow the underbelly of this small country in the middle east. The football association of wales ( FAW) is already $1.5 million dollars to the good for qualifying for the tournament, that just to assist the countries preparations pre tournament. 0

I think I’m banned now from Qatar at least.

Great article Keith
It’s a dirty tournament which many are uneasy about

I find it hypocritical that only now the media are actually taking notice of what’s happened leading up to the tournament , the teams are going to protest, the commentators are going to protest even our very own leader Drakeford intends to have strong words , why wait until now , they’ve had 4 years to do the above but money transcends morality

I think many of us on here have known about these regimes and how they function for years. It’s purely down to their own religious interpretations of the Koran. All people can do, as in this piece is educate and remind others of the actual facts as they see it. Report what is believed to be injustices and human rights breaches. We have a better platform for that because all the media in Qatar etc have to tread carefully. Anything too risky and they are booted out. It all sounds very 1939. Not that they have to in this country and I mean the Middle East representation in the uk.

The fact it’s connected now to the World Cup will always give the whole inequality thing a platform.

That’s all we can do, and of course connect that to everyone on here in a way they can identify with.

I visited several Middle Eastern, Far Eastern, Caribbean, South American and African countries over the years.
The mixed feelings of enjoying different culture and yet the underlying feeling that it somehow felt dirty will always live with me.
China, Hong Kong, Dubai, Cancun, Egypt, Gambia, Jamaica to name but a few.
Even the good ol' US of A still feels very divided been the haves and have nots.
That said, a recent weekend in London made me feel very blessed for what I have and where I live.
Reading that article just rams home my feelings even more.
As a footnote, whilst we are all enjoying the WC this next month or so, how many old and not so old UK citizens will be making difficult decisions about whether to eat or turn on their heating in this cold weather ?
Worrying times all round.

Drakeford cannot afford to offend anyone. A lot of jobs are at stake. His job is to make a case and and create a good business connection with the Qataris while explaining our values.

They in my opinion should buy Cardiff Wales airport off the WAG and run it themselves. Possibly a tie up with St Athan facilities and services including Cardiff Aviation owned by the Iron Maiden singer. Some sexy synergies to be exploited.

Scotland and the North are not at the World Cup. UK did their bit for Qatari LNG by cutting off Russian gas. Dakeford is swimming with big Ocean fish.

I read somewhere 85% of the population are migrant workers. If they had the same rights as UK migrant workers Qatar would be Asian not Arab. The workers cannot marry local women I would i imagine and have little chance of citizen ship. It is take it or leave it.

Brexiteers disliked the Romanian and Bulgarians that did our dirty work on minimum wages, Most returned to the Carpathians in the winter. They may return on restricted permits and rights . This is what the Brexiteers wanted. A Romanian telling a Lincolnshire man he had as much right to be in Boston as he did, did not go down well.

We now need them back. They should hold out for better money and make Aldi Tesco and Lidl pay more for their food. True to form we now have a cost of living crisis and inflation.

Hopefully at least they had decent treatment digs food working hours etc. This is where Qatar fell down in not protecting their migrant workers fro early death and injury. No one like migrant workers on minimum wages. Even we did not.

Yes, this is a football tournament. Too many people pretending they are there for other reasons or pretending they do not want to be there.
