Football can be very unpredictable.
There are ifs , buts, maybes, good luck, bad luck.
But over 46 games, wherever a team finishes, it all evens out and is a true reflection of the teams performances.
Wherever we finish, that's how good or bad we are.

We are 17th right now and possibly on course for a 19/20 finishing spot. isn't 17 bad enough, considering how rubbish we have said the bottom 4/5 teams are?

I suppose we could move up a few spots but does anyone honestly expect us to? Unless Martin changes his ideas, we won't rise. Just be garteful we probably have enough in the bank to avoid the drop.

I think what he’s trying (badly) to say is that the manager is irrelevant, and where a side finishes means that’s how good the squad is and not a reflection on the manager.

Which of course means having a manager in the first place is pointless.

If only people thought before they typed.

With a decent manager we could be doing very much better. Anyone trying to say this is all down to the players is clutching at straws and I'd have to ask why? it surely cannot be in defence of Russell Martin?

Or is the Op saying we would be 17th regardless of who the manager is.

I can’t see what parsnip says as I like many others have him one ignore. He is supposed to have me on ignore but obviously doesn’t play by the site rules.
I am not saying we are a 17th place team, but it’s the players themselves who pass to the opposition countless times, put crosses in 3 or 4 foot high, can’t be assed to tackle, get tackled when they have 3 or 4 options to pass. These things are happening every game with at least half the team.
The crowd in the stadium can see it.
Martin is to blame for the ridiculous tactics used, but the above is down to the players.
If people can’t see that then they either haven’t got a football brain or are stuck watching it on to and don’t see the whole pitch .

Makes you wonder what they do in training? Led by the esteemed coach

These are the same players who went ton that run of games earlier in the season when we were talking of being top 4.

Why then if the players are so crap does the manager and has the manager tried to play champagne football with perry players?

We most certainly are not. I agree. neither would we be with another manager, what we would be is better organised and hopefully harder to beat, neither of which are we with Martin.

I have to disagree, i think we have a core that could make a top 6 side. It is playing the wrong way and making the wrong additions that has cost us.
This side even without them should be a damn sight closer to 6th than they are, I'm no fan of Coopers football but could you imagine this side being the worst defensively in the league under him?

Martin it seems to me is stuck in a one way rabbit hole. Time is his enemy and not his friend. Daylight is getting further away not closer.

He asked for time he got it. He asked for defensive players he got them. He has used up all his excuses and does not even have many injuries like QPR have.

Performances are poor when the team has not had 3 games in a week or any 7 hour coach journeys. For several weeks despite poor results Swansea were only 6 points away from 6th and a possible play off. The transfer window was not a debacle. The team was set up in July to last a full season and only Benda and Walsh have had long term layoffs. . Numerous other teams made no transfers and Whittaker, Patterson Walsh were re integrated and are generally underused.

A good manager would somehow get some results in the last 10 games. I am not expecting much from this squad under Grimes.

The core of the squad was inherited by Martin and has not really been improved upon it at all by the players he brought in. If anything he has consistently made the squad weaker.
But the point stands that a good manager with this core squad makes the most of it and certainly doesn't have us as the worst defensive side in the league.

Even looking at the M'boro side they aren't bursting with talent, but they make the most of what they've got. Akpom has scored 22 in 29 thats about the same amount of goals as in his previous 150 or so games.

Totally agree, we could and probably should be challenging top 6 if not in there. Our manager doesn't play to our strengths, gets rid of any pace or flair, persists on a system that simply doesn't work for us, yet he keeps doing it game after game, week after week, the crowd on Saturday was shocking and just going to keep getting worse with this guy in charge. The owners need to bite the bullet now, take the hit and start the search for a new manager so he can bed in before the start of next season.

Saturday wasn’t a shocking performance but was a dreadful result.
Their first goal would have been questioned if we had VAR.
Their 14 attempts on goal were the same as ours but they were more clinical.
Two groups of Middlesborough supporters I spoke to after the game commented about how dangerous our attack looked and we were far better in the first half than most trams they had seen! Yes, it's over 90+ minutes that counts but how many times have we lost games in the second half, when managers have had the squads in the changing room?

Good point well made. I think many people are beginning to realise this now. We are actually in a much bigger hole now than when Martin joined us. The squad is weaker, our football is slow & predictable with a soft underbelly. The club is an absolute shambles from top to bottom
