| Diplomatic Matos before the trip east today : Stamenić interest confirmed on 08:47 - Apr 24 with 2955 views | RichardO | Thought Stamenic showed great signs of improvement against Southampton. At times showing himself in good positions in the midfield and also enabling us and himself to get forward from deep when able turning to drive forward and his marking or tracking back was better. He also joined the forward press more effectively, for a lot of the things Fulton that has been given praised with his upturn in play, that for me is about what the manager has been asking and coaching for. The only issue would be Stamenic's fitness levels to try and do what is asked, drop back to support the defence which now starts from very deep while supporting the press which is very high to do that needs sensible rotation of our midfield three dropping to cover while some push forward also sometimes the fullbacks need to hold their position to ensure cover conversely if the fullbacks press on down one flank at least two midfielders need to ensure things are kept tight while still being in a position to come onto pullback near the edge meaning wingers and the one spare midfield can support the attacking in the box. Has Stamenic yet got that fitness level yet not quite but given the way we play then rotation of the squad is needed. I wouldn't want to see Stamenic go nor for that fact Galbraith who given his need to cover the right back position has yet to cement how he players in our midfield. For Northern Ireland in the games I have seen Galbraith seemed restricted by positioning requirements put on him and didn't seem to be at his best. Would say that second half performance against QPR apart from the last 10 minutes was a pleasure to watch so maybe the tactics have got the best out of players available meaning we don't have to rely so heavily on individuals which we have seen in the past can lead to very predictable and leave individuals targeted and restrict the teams play. Edited for all those silly mistakes that the predictive text thankfully can be blamed for and hide some of my own which can change the meaning of the post.. [Post edited 24 Apr 10:00]

New Zealand play their first WC game the day after the window opens and last group match 27th June, I can't see any transfer taking place until early July even if they go out in the group stage and our players will be back before that. If Stamenic and Galbraith go it will leave a massive hole in our midfield just before the start of the season, but saying that Stamenic doesn't start every game and we are doing better than I thought without Galbraith.
| Diplomatic Matos before the trip east today : Stamenić interest confirmed on 10:13 - Apr 24 with 2779 views | RichardO | Think we have been fortunate to have both Eom and Widell able to drive forward with the ball and getting into positions closer to the opposition box to cause the opposition defence some consternation also the selection of the pass or understanding within the team means finishing has improved. Stamenic reminds me a little of Leroy Fur;, not the same quality yet but able to drive forward maybe not the same pace but a good pass selection because he knows he is being chased down and needs to remove the ball from pressed areas. Because of the box to box nature of the way the game is played now the demands on the midfielder and come to that the whole team means rotation of the first eleven is crucial picking the right to to pick up the most points home and away is not an easy thing that we like to think we can do. | | | |

That is a good question I have been impressed by Jordan James especially in the Wales setup where he complimented Ampadu in the midfield where Ampadu had previously looked lost. Could we afford James and would he compliment what we end up having next season. Our midfield maybe starting to get some shape about it allowing the team to function in the way we want it but is that about having more players available or able to cover injuries. Did we leave ourselves a bit threadbare in other positions which without strong cover weakened us.

Remember Jordan James is not owned by Leicester but by Rennes so we are not talking distressed sales prices.

Not a case of replacing Stamenic it is a case of adding to him for me. I would prefer Stamenic in a more forward role playing not the hunting down the ball but ensuring he is marking his player correctly, we have seen with Fulton that when he steps forward and gets in the thick of the game he is move effective there is a fine line playing in the midfield with regards to covering a space or area not getting pulled out of shape and marking players tight enough to prevent them easy possession of the ball. while ensuring opposition forward runs are covered. In yesterday's game we lost the ball a lot of time in that first half chasing shadows because the point of a high press is to restrict the player on the ball opportunities to pass if the midfield too deep then opposition players have time and options to control the ball on receipt of a pass and time to pick out a pass so if the whole team doesn't get the press right and pressing the goalie means someone is always spare, if you get the press right the only option for the team trying to play out from the back would be back passes or long balls which if done slowly allow everyone to get into the right position to mark conversely if the press in done right opposition defenders haven't got time on the ball and give the ball away, you could say that maybe we should have made better use of the mistakes we forced on Norwich in that first half but for get amount of time in that first half and the last 15 minutes we dropped too deep forced back but giving the ball away with mindless clearances didn't help in that last 15 as we had the game by the scruff of the neck before it. Coopers teams often tried the same dropping off for the last 15 to defend a lead but did seem a bit better at defending those situations, when team push on in a desperate attempt time get something out of the game then we have to have a plan in a place to alleviate that pressure not just kicking the ball away willy nilly but good play that enables us to keep us upfield as we did so well for the previous 30 minutes of that second half. Hoping that next season we have Stamenic playing alongside Galbraith and Franco both playing the deeper roles with Stamenic slightly higher up the pitch to add that bit of composure higher up the pitch that can keep the pressure on teams not by pressing haphazardly but with good ball control further up the pitch, I would like to see Galbraith become that pivotal midfielder like Britton, Allen or O'Brien that snuffs out opposition play in the midfield while able to get the ball quickly out of danger and into good positions to players further up the who have good control of the ball which allows us to stay up the pitch. Widell , Stamenic and Eom. Would Galbraith and Franco struggle with head tennis battle yes but with Cabango and Burgess that responsibility should not fall on them, covering behind those centrehalves as they attack the high ball would be and it would allow our full backs to deal with wingers more effectively. How we use Galbraith and Stamenic next season will be vital to our success, if they are still here?

A midfield of Stamenic, Galbraith and Franco is too flat. We need a #10. We haven't had one since Jamie Paterson and it shows in our attacking play. Walta should be that guy, or I'd like to see Eom get a chance. For me our strongest midfield would be Galbraith at DM, Widell at CM and Walta/Eom at AM. Others like Franco, Stamenic and Fulton would still get plenty of game time, or if the interest is serious we could sell Stamenic and use the funds to reinforce other areas where we have less depth.

If what Keith is indicating progresses with firm interest and sums of money that would surprise us then in my opinion Stamenic will be gone. I see us currently playing 4-1-4-1. I would prefer to see us play 4-2-3-1 with Galbraith and Franco in front of the defence but further forward, with a 10 possibly Walta or Eom between the two wide players. I believe this would give us the flexibility to attack and move the ball forward quickly.

I still pine for the old 4-3-3/4-5-1 that we used to use in the good old days. Not sure if it would work any more though. We definitely need a bit more guile at the sharp end of midfield no matter how we get it there. I'd be happy to try your 4-2-3-1 on the basis of Galbraith/Franco alternatively roaming or covering. Harsh on Widell, but I guess he also has options as one of the wide players, although I think he'd be better as a Pratley type driving force in the middle.

We have seen the three originally mentioned play but with Stamenic as the holding player not Galbraith and Franco. If we are playing three up top then those wingers need to move their defenders around at times getting closer to Vipotnik who is so often isolated and vice versa leaving long kicks down field a wasted opportunity and handing the ball back to the opposition unchallenged. Would say that the development of the trio has been disrupted by injures in places where we lacked cover. Agree that Paterson and Ntcham could create space and goal scoring opportunities but they did need space and ball created by ball winners and movement off them not always but they did needed them add Piroe in that opportunist goal scoring picture, it didn't work so well having the three on the pitch when defence was needed but that might be about over committing players forward from defensive positions leaving us open or defensive players sitting too deep unable to give support when need. A fine line between being a game winning team, a team that drops points and a team that are relagation candidates in the Championship. Fingers crossed Matos can piece together a team who can be the former next season.

Yep. The ball is taking far too long to get out of our defensive third, not helped by the lack of ball skills possessed by our usual central defensive pairing, or the natural style of our regular DM. I get that there will be periods where we want to rest with the ball, or the opposition will effectively press and force us to find the space, but that is too much the regular position rather than the rare. We need to be able to switch from defence to attack much more quickly than we currently do. On the limited occasions when we manage it we do look dangerous.
