Good to hear our new signings have potential. Interesting end note on Burgess and Eom. Firstly Burgess. I wouldn't be shocked in any way if he was not in Matos plans. His stats are actually good but putting that aside, his passing ability is up there as one of the worse we have had in a while (alongside his decision making) and his partnership with Cabango doesn't work. Eom I would be shocked at. How in any way could we consider selling Eom over Ronald? Yes Ronald tracks back and defends, and has scored and assisted But Eom for me when on it brings more. The argument is he is hot and cold and more cold at times that Ronald. Maybe I have answered my own question. But if one goes, both should go. Would be a shame, but if it means we get more goals from the new signings then so be it. [Post edited 24 Jul 20:43]

Eom took a part of his first season to adjust to being at the club and started to play well but then had an injury setback , last season we saw lots of new faces and then a new manager and the whole team suffered at times because of it, Eom and the team started to look sharper, stronger and more consistent in the quality of his play in the second half of the season and could we say he has been played out of his normal position. Are we seeing now in the squad a bit of strength in depth to maintain a quality to counter opposition teams who seemed to be able to gett back into a game, all be it because of tiredness on our part while opposition make changes to counter our play, will we able to bring on fresh leg with the abilities to change the flow back into our favour. Nice to see that second goal scored to enable the team to see out a game instead of those late disappointments. Early days and two good tests to come to see how the team is shaping up for the rest of the season. As for the xfer window it hopefully will be good to get it out of the way, to get the team settled at least until the next window. When do the squads get announced?

I would say one of the biggest reasons we let teams back into games is because we sit deep and try to defend a lead, instead of killing teams off when we are on top.

Indeed. I hope that these hydration breaks don’t find a way into the game permanently. I can see the sense behind pre season friendlies and of course in games where pitch temperature exceeds a given value but not on a rainy night in Stoke, surely?

Yes we do drop deep but the midfielders role is vital to ensure that the forwards are supported, defenders are covered and the flow of ball between the two is maintained We have seen trying to kill teams off being our downfall leaving wingers unmarked or channels between fullbacks and centrehalves exploited, teams who are at home or have to chase games will always try and expose the opposition team trying to get them to make mistakes better teams will do it better and will have a plan. Both Ipswich games last season were typical of how we gave games away by losing a defensive shape. At home we pressed forward they kept solid bided their time and went one nil up after we ran out of steam on the 30 minute mark, we managed to get back "on top" or draw level but then threw caution to the wind leading to our downfall, leaving ourselves exposed Burgress scoring two OG as we pushed forward. Away we did the usual early press and were exposed again within the first couple of minutes. They then picked us off in that dread period just before half time and scored around the 70th minute to see the game out. They weren't lucky they saw where we left ourselves exposed at the back. Those losses weren't because we sat back too deep they were because we didn't defend properly. When you defend you have to defend properly but even when attacking you need to ensure you can defend better than anything the opposition can throw at you in counter attacks at times we haven't. That was more so under William's and Martin. Yes once teams need to attack us we drop deeper to defend, we have too but what we lacked for the most part was the ability to hold on to possession and be able to counter effectively some really awful clearances, all very well playing out from the back but then that only results in long clearances that could have been played 5 minutes earlier before opposition defence have got back into shape meaning any spaces to expliot have gone and you have wasted a counter attack opportunity. Defending that slim lead or that single point at the is hard but having no supported outlets and panicking with our clearances just leads to more pressure which makes dropping too deep pointless if you don't know how to relieve that pressure or don't have players with the abilities to do so.

But dropping deep to defend a lead is what we have often done. Is it the coaching mantra now as seen recently with England.

It has been done for years Jacketts teams did it so did Coopers it won us games at times it sometimes loses games Williams got pulled over the coals while his team was solid at the back but couldn't score he reverted to Martin football and suffered even more poor results. If you haven't got the players or tactics for example at set pieces to do it as Potter's team weren't it is a flawed tactic, Mark Hughes Wales team relying on their poor defence to get a needed point seems a poor tactic when he had various players from Giggs, Bellamy, Hartson Simon Davis, Savage and Speed to attack with. Do we have enough quality players in the team to rely on our attacking play to win games that is what we are aiming for are we there yet?

Last season both Franco & Widell would run out of steam and drop off.

I’ve never been a fan of watching a team try and defend a lead ,inviting teams on and defending the 18 yard line is fraught with danger Coventry ,last season played with the,’ you score 2 ,we can score 4 ‘,mindset ,like the old adage says ,’attack is the best form of defence’ , if you invite pressure ,at some point you’re going to concede ,as we’ve shown

Yeah, I'd prefer to see that as well but Cov had goals coming from multiple players, midfielders & wide players all chipping in. We haven't had that for years.

Exactly this. Why on Earth would you want to invite teams onto you when the best option by far is to do whatever you can to keep them pinned back in their own half? I'm sure there's some sort of coaching theory backed up by the usual nonsense stats suggesting that it's the right thing to do that modern coaches have swallowed hook, line and sinker, but when reality collides with the theory truth is often revealed.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

It's called "parking the bus" mentality, purportedly from Jose "the special one" Mourinho. He claimed he would use it the whole game instead of just protecting a narrow lead. Didn't we have a poster several years ago, Parqdebus (spell check needed), on WOL? Res, was that you? Maybe you can expand on this. BTW, I am not a fan of "parking the bus" strategy.

Nobody does it is horrible to watch, so is the frustrating backward passing when a forward pass looks on but is shunned in case a mistake is made further up the pitch with a longer ball,, if something doesn't work out in the opposition thiird is it going to hurting a well organised team playing on the front foot but we seem to prefer to make those mistakes in our own defensive third.
