Less possession, more cynical while countering and doing it in a pretty way?

Seems like a Laudrup/Mourinho style .... or maybe its Monk style? Kind of excited to see if Monk intends to keep a more closed defence while exploiting counters in the season to come.

I think away from home it's a very good plan. Villa have had patches of good away form doing a similar thing. We'd still need to keep the ball more at home, though.

Great win today.

Difficult to argue with the results, we've scored almost as many goals under Monk (25) in 14 games than we did with Laudrup (29) in 24.

Any counterteam needs pace .. duh.

We have Dyer, Routledge and Emnes doesnt look slow. Need one or two more.

Pace is great, but someone to hold the ball up is as crucial. We must make every effort to keep Bony. Unless he's pushing for a move, I wouldn't accept anything short of 25 million for him.

How are we going to cope without any more FOOTBALL until AUGUST.

Where can we use our CAPS until then?

You need a really solid, organized defence to get away with this.

Also, worth noting that there were 11 British players in the squad today and only one Spaniard. (Obviously, I'm not counting Vasquez as a player)

I am not slating Vasques, I actually think that his off the ball movement is good. He just needs to mature, if he bangs them in in 2 years I wont be the one to say, we could have had himl.

You need pace but you cannot win with that alone.
You need strength of body and mind.
You also need quickness of thought.
OUR team had lot of it yesterday and most refreshing it was
Probably Monk learned more yesterday than in many other games

As well as pace you need a solid defence, we defended well yesterday with very good performances from 2 young centre backs.

Rog.
Morning.
Indeed, I actually think Barkley is worth developing as he s big and strong. He can tackle too and head a ball. Amat could develop but Im not as sanguine about him as you but he s certainly not a "bad" player.
Just wondering whether t was Chico s last game. Ho hum if so.

What was significant yesterday was a vastly changed team showing commitment. I m upbeat about the new season too as I think MONK will surprise those not that enamoured with his appointment as manager.

If Chico never plays for us again yesterday wasn't his last game.

For some reason, that post made me think of this:

You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line

It barely counted as music the first time around...

They'll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
There's only one way to beat them
Get round the back
