Council tax rise only 4.58% this year 19:10 - Feb 25 with 1304 viewspikeypaul

Thanks to the windfall from Government we are only going to have to pay an extra 4.58% this year,a little better than the 6% last or the 4.9% the year before.

Great to see our Labour council doing such a grand job.

Council tax makes up only a relatively small proportion of the amount of funding for Councils.

The majority comes from Welsh Government and this amount has been cut year on year both in actual amount, and more recently in real terms despite a small percentage increase. Increases in Council tax have been essential in councils trying to bridge a small part of the gap between their costs, and the Central grant cut.

Swansea council is getting an extra so called windfall of £17,000,000 this year from Government.

This is a one off, I wonder what the increase will be next when we do not get it.

The fact is they can not or will not control spending, typical Labour, but hey the people of Swansea continue to vote them in so they are obviously happy to pay it or just clueless and vote them in since it’s what their grand father did.

I'm not sure what more councils can do set against the backdrop of year on year cuts from the WG over the last decade (~20% reduction in gross total, but it'll be more than that in real terms):
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-

Something's got to give. Wales is also about to lose about £285m a year in EU funding now as well (although that's 'only' about 3% of our total funding).

The WG, of course, is having to pass on the reductiuon in funding from Westminster. Although Westminster purse strings are starting to be relaxed, in real terms UK funding to Wales is still below 2010/11 levels in real terms, so more cuts or increased taxation is needed:

In short, we're still not out of UK Government austerity.

(The above's a rather simplistic top level view and doesn't take into account things like reserves that councils have squirrelled away, nor new devolved tax raising powers. And I don't claim to understand it in any detail).

Alternatively keep voting conservative and watch life expectancy decline for the first time since the beginning of the last century. All other western nations are still seeing an upward trend apart from the UK and the US.

I've no idea whether a different colour council would do better (Swansea's aggressive fines on parking does my nut in, so hard to imagine anyone doing worse there).

But yeah, I though a little context would help...

The other thing to note is that Labour has outright control in only 7 of the 22 councils. All councils who've released numbers are proposing increases in council tax. Swansea's isn't out of the ordinary (and lower than Monmouth's, the only sole Conservative council). Newport's (Labour) is the highest though at 7.95%, which may have something to do with aggressive savings in recent years, plus 25% cuts in workforce.

Christ, this is dull
