| Freddie Woodman slowly closing his Newcastle door 14:15 - Feb 18 with 1945 views | KeithHaynes | Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has suggested that he wants to “kick on” and he is willing to leave the club to do that. Woodman started his career with Crystal Palace before he signed for Newcastle in 2013. He is yet to make a senior appearance for the Magpies. The 23-year-old has previously had loan spells with the likes of Kilmarnock and Aberdeen. Woodman is enjoying a breakthrough spell with Championship outfit Swansea City. He is currently in his second year with the Swans and in that time he has totted up 67 appearances. Over the years the ‘keeper has been capped at every youth level for England from U-16s to the U-21s. He was part of the side that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. Speaking with The Athletic, Woodman insisted that he wants to “experience so much more” in his career: “As happy as I am to have played those games, deep down, I want more. I see (Karl) Darlow doing really well now and I’ve watched Martin (Dubravka), Tim Krul, Steve Harper; all these goalies have played so many games. “I think to myself, ‘I’d love to do that, to go out and play in front of 52,000 for such a massive club and rack up the games’. “I look back and appreciate playing for such a big club but I also think, ‘Come on, I want to experience so much more and kick on’. It makes me super excited for what’s to come.” | |

Probably a condition to going out on loan, Newcastle ensuring a pay day.

It’s called financial security 👠And keeping his options open whilst doing so it’s a no brainer isn’t it

Top prospects at Arsenal appear to be a lot shrewder. Play me in the first team or I am away and I am not sigining anything . Amaechi and Balogun for example.

Every players own particular set of individual circumstances and situation are different For lots of reasons It makes sense for Woodman. Security in an uncertain world is important, it allows him to concentrate on the job in hand too.

Almost certainly no. Newcastle are hoping Swansea get promoted then they will quote silly money to buy him £7m perhaps. Swansea will persue other options. He now has a long contract and Newcastle can make him no3 cover if they want to. His extra wages will be compensation for being on the bench. Steve Harper was reserve to Shay Given for about 10 years. [Post edited 18 Feb 2021 21:49]

I got to be honest I haven't been as concerned last month or two with him as I was previously. His distribution seems to have settled a bit since that disaster game against Brentford was it? Not sure if the stats back up my argument or not though.

I agree, that's why I posed the question. I was quite impressed, especially with his distribution and anticipation, when he first came to us but felt he'd gone backwards but as you point out he seems to have gone up a gear recently.

Think he suffers a bit from the pressure in some games, understandable in a young Keeper, but when we really need to try and hold on to the ball he inevitably kicks it straight into touch, he's young with still lots to learn, be interesting to see if we do keep him, one way or another.

Woodman was down to 12 months on his contract just like Balogun. Woodman needed to sit on his contract until Christmass and wait for Swansea's offer in January £1m. It really is very simple. I am kind enough to explain it to you and thorough enough to back it up with examples. Woodman is well esptablished at Swansea playing the system devised for him by Margetson who may have worked with him at England. If he goes anywhere else he might have to change into a sweeper keeper. This might not suit him. For a so called 'average keeper' his data is extraordinary.

It's rarely as simple as that and be amazed if it was in this case. How much is Woodman earning? Are they wages we'd match while in the championship or for the length of contract he had at Newcastle? Did they give him a decent signing on bonus / fee? Would the Swans have been willing to pay a million for him in January? Not to mention that he's on the way to becoming statistically one of best goalkeepers in this division, ever. Having been with is last season too, if we don't go up, is he going to be as happy spending another season in this division approaching his mid20s? [Post edited 19 Feb 2021 16:32]

He sgned a long contract with Newcastle pricing himself out of a move to Swansea. Swansea have to be very careful not to "tap up" loan players or no ore will be coming. Whatever are Freddie 's plans Swansea is one option he signed away unless Newcastle are willing to take 'a haircut'. Benda and Webb are in Swansea s long term plans.

Yes exactly. And we don't know what Newcastle have told him. They obviously must rate him.

That’s not true You’re making things up again His Newcastle contract hasn’t priced him out of anything But he’s making a name for himself in the game. Whilst he’s not the complete or finished article yet he’s doing well and it’s his form and achievements on the pitch that might be pricing him out of a move here But you want your loan players to do well . That’s both clubs as it’s in everyone’s interest. A value might soar as a consequence but that’s how things work. Newcastle rate him as well hence the longer contract.

Please show some respect. I may be wrong but I am not making anything up. If Swansea get promoted Cooper might like to sign Woodman so as to not have to drill another keeper in the way of working Mr Margetson and he have develped over 24 months. Newcastle will see that Swansea are now in the PL cash and will slap a £10m valuation on him. This is a direct result of Woodman signing a long contract with them. The same logic applied to Joey Allen. "He wanted to join Swansea city". Yeh sure. That is why he signed long contracts with stoke not once but twice. [Post edited 19 Feb 2021 19:30]

Ok I do not have transcripts of bugged conversations or a mole in the club willing to speak on oath. I admit it. I am just using common sense. Admittedly doing that on forums even as good as this one does open oneself up for ridicule.

Again with Allen, we didn't sign him because we didn't match or beat Stoke's bid to Liverpool for him, so we didn't get to the stage of discussing personal terms with him. He's repeated that again in recent weeks. To expect him to wait around for us with no guarantee that we'd actually go through with the plan of signing him had he decided to sit his contract out&waste a year of his careee in Liverpools reserves on that basis is very naive of you. What if he'd had a career threatening injury towards the end of his Liverpool contract? What if for some reason the manager at the Swans at the time had decided by the time that they didn't fancy him or would have preferred to spend that wage elsewhere in the squad? Then you're suggesting once he's at Stoke that he could have run down his contract there and then joined us? By which point we'd be in the championship and not willing to pay probably half of what he's on at Stoke!? Come on its complete fantasy mun. The reason he didn't join as unpalatable as it maybe to you to criticise Huw Jenkins is because Jenkins frankly ummed and ahhhed, basically messing Liverpool and the player about. And of course he had a great Euros and Liverpool had more leverage which Huw failed to see coming.
