This set a few people off. “In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, to contribute something to solving overpopulation.”
He probably was but I don't care. I liked the old fella. He tried to use humour to break the ice apparently, it's just that some people are entirely miserable.
When he made that Jones comment the right answer would have been, only on theleft of the room, on the right we're all Thomases!

And I'm sure the Dukr would have appreciated it.
Was it meant in a malicious way.I doubt it.
Clearly many enjoying hindsight to justify their narrative .

What hypocritical cretins we are
I do try hard not to be a hypocrite but sadly I cannot escape the cretin. It seems it must be a pre-loaded app on humans, delete the cretin and nothing works properly!

Don't fret the new world is on its way . Slowly but surely view points are being eroded by those who sit in moral judgement on us, although I'm not quite sure who gave them that authority .
"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

We are all guilty Cat. We cannot always act and say as we feel .

On that, the Duke was probably recounting conversations with his friend David Attenborough in rather more brusque language than Sir David tends to use.
Here you go. Made more unsettling by the authority of the delivery.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

He was of his time, and made comments of his time. Nowhere near the level of casual and sometimes intentional racism I heard from grandparents of a similar age. His position perhaps protected him from some criticism a non-Royal may face, but equally we have a prime minister who has made equally as bad comments and gets away with it. He's gone now and his words are the past, and that's perhaps where they should stay.

That is obviously true but he was also very forward thinking in many ways. the Duke of Ed scheme, his commitment to preservation of widlife though unfortunately he also saw shooting game as a legitimate part of preservation.
Some of his words were defiinitely taken a different wa y to how he intended but that's people for you, perception is still everything.

As we sung as kids in school assembly
"All things bright and beautiful All creatures great and small All things wise and wonderful Prince Phillip shoots them all'
Not a royalist, but going to be hard for the Queen and I wish her well.

I think he was typical of that generation, the type who names a black labrador by a name now banned apart from usage by black people themselves. My old girl had a decent wardrobe and had a coat described as being nxxxxx brown. It was general use. Shocking to the younger ones now but there again, older people went and volunteered to lay down their lives for our freedom. They wouldn't now.
Rather ironic that a guy who fought against 'real' Nazi's now upsets forever offended individuals who spend their time witch hunting against imaginary ones.
Those were the days when a Nazi was a Nazi, for actually being one in the first place as opposed to being labelled one just for voting for Brexit or having a different opinion etc, etc, etc.

My niece works for the Duke of Edinburgh awards, speaks very highly of him indeed.
Until recently, he attended all gold award presentations, including my grand daughters gold award presentation at St James Palace.

That's it entirely Flash, I genuinely think he cared. I think he appreciated his priviliged position (as does the Queen) and gave all his efforts to serving the country, as does the Queen.
It doesn't mean I agree with a monarchy but I can respect the person all the same.
