When Phillips nearly joined Swansea but at the last minute Joel Latibeaudiere beat him to it.
That day training at Liverpool, I dropped out early.
“All the staff knew that the move was meant to happen. I think it would have been a permanent move and they wanted to protect me, they didn’t want me to get injured in training.
“It didn’t feel like it wouldn’t happen. It seemed almost done but as the day went on, I just thought, 'Oh right, maybe this isn’t going to go the way we all imagined this morning'.
“Come the evening, once my bags were packed, I wasn’t going to move back in with my parents again because I’d just come back from Germany, so I went and got a flat and that was the process of me moving out of home again.”
Phillips was left disappointed that the move did not materialise, especially after getting a taste of regular minutes in Germany.
“It was very frustrating,” he said. “I’d just had my first taste of playing for a first team in front of fans, bringing value to a side and being more than just a training player in Stuttgart and I loved it.
“I was looking forward to building on that. I was realistic enough to know that while Virgil, Joe, Joel and even Fab (Fabinho) were there, they were all ahead of me in the pecking order. It would have taken extreme circumstances for that to change for me, which no-one would have foreseen, for me to have a chance of playing.
“Even just playing, I wanted to be playing regularly and someone who brings value to a side and adds something. That’s what I was getting by moving away.
“When the possibility of me not playing football for a first team in a competitive manner seemed to be taken away and wasn’t coming to fruition for half a season, it got me worrying a bit because I am aware of my age.
“I didn’t want to turn into one of these players who is 24 or 25 with barely any games under their belt. At my age, I need to be playing games.”

It all depends, if it's just a loan then I'd stick with Latibeaudiere BUT if this could be a permanent move then yes. He's young, he has potential and maybe a future sell on value of more than we pay for him.
I'd like us to get back to that model, bring in youngsters, improve them and make a profit. It's very hard to keep that up long term. Now and then you need to buy a finished article but it's where we should be if we want to be sustainable. | |

Centre half is where we have that production line. You can only bring through so many young players with potential at once - when we had Rodon, Cabango, Guehi and Wilmot in Cooper's first season they basically played in shifts. But for injuries to vdH and Rodon Cabango wouldn't have had a look in. Now he's going to the Euros.
Rodon, Cabango, Cooper, Butler. Latibeaudiere brought in willing to sit on a bench for a season or so, where Phillips wouldn't have been. Everyone wants to buy up more stock of young players but you have to clean your plate before going for seconds or they'll go to waste. | | | |

He's a few months older than Cabango, more experienced than Cabango was when he started making appearances for us (and Rodon, who only had a dozen games with Cheltenham before being thrown in at the deep end), and was no less highly rated a few years ago making both his u23s and Wales u21s debuts earlier iirc.
Scott Butler just got his first pro contract. Good defender. After him there's a gap but we've been looking to recruit centre halves, will be a few joining among the new u18s and u23s we've signed.
If Cabango gets sold obviously you can then go and get one of the players on Andy Scott's lists. You have money and gametime to offer alongside Bennett, with Cooper and Latibeaudiere pushing for inclusion (if they're willing to play backup again). If Roberts is sold he can then be replaced, as we did with Rodon/Bennett, but Naughton just got an extension on his contract so clearly the club isn't looking past him as an option in the short-term. He's only 32. | | | |

He looked pretty bad to me. I certainly wouldn't be happy if we paid the money Liverpool will inevitably hold out for. There are dozens of better defenders in the Premier League and there's better defenders playing in The Championship, too. |  |

Maybe so but those appearnances are partly why I'd be so interested if it were a possibility. He looks (to me anyway) more than good enough in our division. | |

I don't think he'd be a backup to a backup, I think he'd more likely displace someone in or around the first team now.
I liked the look of Latibeaudiere in his few chances, I thought Cabango looked quite solid but a bit mistake prone and Bennett, well he was more a row Z type than a passing player.

I think we're one of those clubs that gets linked to players in stories just to drum up interest (same Forest and Derby etc.) and hurry along actual offers, and with Guehi returning we'll be linked with lots in that position this summer whether Cabango stays or goes.
Kean Bryan is one I wouldn't trust in a 2, seems very much an outside centre half. Interest from Schalke and been offered a new contract by Sheffield United. "Keeping his options open". Agent will be busy phoning his favourite journos.
On paper Bennett, Cabango, Latibeaudiere, Cooper & Naughton in a 3 is good depth for a club in our financial position. Two were brought in just last season, one recently signed an extension, and two promising youth products one of whom is on his way to the Euros. Seems a strange position to jump into the market early for, we've got bigger gaps to worry about.
If Cabango leaves then the picture changes and we have money to work with. | | | |

Phillips in a heartbeat.
Lati seems to have fallen from grace somewhat, from his heady days as Man Citeh captain and England world cup winner. His confidence isn't what it should be given his heritage. Cabango shows way more heart and desire.
If anyone can, Cooper will turn it around for him, restore his belief and help him fulfil that massive latent talent, just as he has for countless others. | |
