Always in commentary he talks of the approach the manager brings to games and is very complimentary. From the OS. “It was amazing how much time he spent with us, and how he then translated that into the way the under-23s played and you could see the progression they made over the second half of last season. “We were so impressed with that, and the efforts of Kris and the academy staff there have made it much easier for the likes of Cameron Congreve, Joel Cotterill, Azeem Abdulai and Ben Lloyd to come in and quickly feel settled and involved. “He stepped up last season and was a great sounding board for us, he offers different opinions and always relates things to The Swansea Way. “He has great knowledge of the game, a great understanding, but, every bit as importantly, he has been a great person. “We are really happy and looking forward to continuing to work with him.” A replacement for O'Leary as coach of the under-21s - as the Swans development side will be known during the coming season - will be announced in due course.

Incredible given the stick he has taken on here over the years

| KoL steps up on 13:21 - Jul 6 with 2888 views | jasper_T | The progress in the second half of the season Martin talks about is... well two wins both at home isn't much of an improvement on what came before. The u23s finished off the bottom of the PDL South table only on goal difference. It was a poor season with a lot of cheap goals given away trying to imitate Martin's flawed system. If it pays dividends in smoothing the transition of certain players, and those players go on to do well for us this season, then of course it's worth it. Time will tell. | | | |

Absolutley true coaching is about getting your ideas across, there have been many examples of where great players have failed to make the switch a la sir Bobby charlton, Bryan Robson, are two such examples. My starting this thread was raising the news but also highlighting how many on here have given KoL stick before when he was part of the first team set up under Monk....many on here have short memories.

Players asked to perform to top standard failed consistently and have been moved on. I watched the Austria and Croatia u19 do it so why not Swansea u23? All Swansea players should be sufficiently skilled to retain possession when they have an extra man (the goal keeper). Ben Margetson, Ben Eriksen? Scott Butler, Cameron Evans, DeFreitas Hanson, Gould, Searle and Jacob Jones were drilled and trained and encouraged but simply could not do it leading to countless errors and drawn games instead of wins. It is a development league and many do not develop and fall by the wayside and end up in Carmarthen Town shirts, Rushesha, Abdullai, Congreave, Lloyd and Cotterill fulfill the minimum standards and beyond. I didn't rate KoL as a player or Monk as a manager. But KoL the coach I'm keeping an open mind, but the signs are good.

Leon Britton must be bored and is already involved loosely with the group as a player /mentor.

Brendan, Steve Coope ( World Cup winner, teams 3 times in the play offs in his his only 3 seasons of league management promoted to PL at 3rd attempt) are another two Managers /coaches without a playing pedigree, KoL got stick as a coach inder Monk as fans judged him as they saw what they saw as a player ( even thoughhe was actually admired by Martinez when playing) Opinions and footie fans eh It is interesting though this move especially gicen all the talk about Calderwood joining

there is truth in that and Im not knocking the appointment rememebr I asked last season as to why KoL seemed to be on the bench matchdays.... I always think it is good to have some local lads involved ...and O Leary does have a link to our heritage.

Yep. There's absolutely nothing to suggest that ability as a player equates to ability as a coach in any way, shape or form. Indeed there is a very strong argument to be made for great footballers actually making worse managers on the whole because what they found easy they don't often have the ability to teach others to do.
