If Allen is fit, playing holding midfield would sort this out.

"IF" exactly. Can't see Joey being fit or playing every game either. I could be wrong though!

Can't see Newcastle being very happy with Ashby getting limited game time, and I can't see Key being a sub for most of this season. Could be that we are moving to 4 at the back, maybe 4-4-2 (which I am not a fan of ordinarily but could work with the squad Duff is assembling)? [Post edited 6 Aug 2023 18:45]

I can see Key and Ashby playing on the right. Ashby played right side of midfield on Newcastle tour. Will we revert to a back four when a left back arrives

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Rushworth Ashby Cabango Wood New signing Key Fulton Grimes Ginnelly Yates Piroe (if he stays)

4-4-2, I don't see it happening. I'm more tempted to say 4-1-3-2 or 4-3-1-2 but in reality, we'll stick with the wing back thing, it's the flavour right now. it's fine if you have the right players but we don't. Have we got another manager whose idea is to make the players fit his system rather than choose the best system for the players? Time will tell I guess. On Saturday my suggestion would have been take pato off and put Kuharevich on up front with Piroe dropping into the "10" hole. 3-4-1-2. But what do I know? Edit... I'm confused by this, "Josh Key got into some really good areas, I thought he was fantastic, his attitude and application was top drawer. "But he's a right-footed player and the goal probably tells you why we need some lefties in the building." The goal was down to Rushworth's cock up wasn't it? [Post edited 6 Aug 2023 22:12]

the goal was down to a silly throw in and ben cabango getting beat by the high press. Rushworth was class with his feet yesterday

What I didn't get from the goal, why wasn't Key taking it? On the edge of our 18yd area and one of the centre halves was taking it with Key nowhere to be seen.

Not for their goal he wasn't, he should have launched that one into one of the channels instead of putting cabango under pressure. I don't think he will be doing it again.

Duff seems to be set on 352. I can see Ashby and Key battling it out for that RWB spot. Key is ahead so far by the look of it. Not Swans fault if Ashby plays shit when given the chances.

I think he’s on about our goal. Leftie Cullen set it up almost straight away after coming on. Even though Key got into some good areas, as he said, he was unable to set up a goal

Cullen coming on gave more options to the players behind him came to the ball in tight midfield areas showing himself and wanting the ball and then spinning off to having dragged the defenders forward creating the space behind them good movement. Suppose it could said fresh legs coming on but he did the same starting against PNE last year from the unaccustomed position on the right.

First game for Ashby, Newcastle haven't allowed him to come here to sit on the bench

When we get a left back I can see us going 4 at the back with Ashby at right full back and key on the right side of midfield.

If you look at it again, you’ll see that Cabango called for the ball and coukd have dealt with it if he’d not been rooted to the spot. Yes, Rushworth possibly should have declined the offer but Cabango has to take a sizeable amount of the blame.

| New transfer link on 08:54 - Aug 7 with 2701 views | cadleigh | While I agree with a lot of what @SullutaCreturned says about formations, I think @raynor94 and @Whiterockin have nailed it. Whatever you think of the respective managers, under Cooper we had a great reputation for developing Premier League players on loan, while under Martin that well started to run dry. Watson has made us attractive again, and he won’t indulge Duff if he decides to bench Ashby simply because he prefers another player for subjective reasons. (If Ashby doesn’t deliver the goods, of course the manager has no obligation to play him and we should return him at the first opportunity having kept his parent club informed at all stages.) So Ashby starts. And so does Key. And unless we are shopping for a new LB purely as back-up for Key in that position (which I very much doubt), both play on the right. I agree that Duff has favoured a back 3 so far. He’s also said he is agnostic about formations and willing to mix it up, as he did up front against Birmingham. It comes down to this: as a manager will he play his best starting XI, or the XI players best able to slot into his preferred formation? I think we could have a really strong 4-2-3-1 in the making with this squad. | |

A lot of talk last season to playing to our strengths with the players we have and a I agree with Ashby and Key down the right. Rushworth Ashby-Wood-Cabango-New left back Fulton-Grimes Key-Piroe-Ginnelly Yates That's the team I would like to see going forwards between Ginnelly, Yates and Piroe I can see in around 45/50 goals. Give that Piroe stays of course.

With currently what we have plus a left back. I would go 4-3-1-2 with the same players except Piroe behind Cullen and Yates. I've not seen enough of Ginnelly to put him ahead of Cullen who impressed me again when he came on Saturday.

Yes cabango should have realised that a brum player would be close and cone to the ball, as you always should. As I've said rushworth will definitely be having second thoughts about passing to cabango again.
| New transfer link on 10:47 - Aug 7 with 2515 views | cadleigh | Apparently there's a vlog made by a Barnsley supporter who says that Duff prefers to play four at the back but was forced to play three CBs by player availability. Haven't seen it, can't vouch for the accuracy of that claim, just sharing in case of interest. | |
