| Swansea City v Middlesbrough: Match day thread on 08:39 - Dec 14 with 4983 views | Azzuriswan | We must not fall in to the slow sideways passing mode of the last 2 games or we could be in for a tonking. Attack from the off and perhaps one or two of our 20 shots will hit the net with luck. | | | |

Unfortunately after two seasons of Martin slow sideways passing is ingrained into our players.

Only five of the starting line up on Tuesday were here under Martin, so I don't know how it would be ingrained on the other six.

It’s a fair point but ,and I hate to appear tedious, this mindset has been stuck in players. It clearly is. Slow back and sideways is in their mindset. In the heat of a game of sport, you invariably go into a kind of default, automatic mode. It’s what we are seeing now in our captain who actually stops after jogging forward ,puts his foot on the ball ,then it all comes to a halt and we see him turningboitifully slowly to trace back only to be left for dead . It remains key to our woes . The new coach has to address this immediately . Duff failed .

That style is OK as long as you got pace in the side,to switch it quickly when needed it don't suit us as we not go an outlet

And of those, neither of the two centre backs, nor Paterson played the way they did under Martin. Could only really level that accusation at the central midfield pairing. People need to let Russell Martin go, he has no impact on how we are playing at the moment. We didn’t really have a discernible playing style under Duff and Sheehan hasn’t changed a lot in his two games.

It’s a shame as professional footballers they can’t learn and develop. Bar the fact only half the side featured under Martin. An odd one that.

Keith. With respect to professional footballers, many don’t seem to have the required intellect to do so. It staggers me they need a change of coach to point out where they are going wrong or how they can organise better during a game.

Boro were winning at halftime .Liam Rosenior made 3 changes then. This definitely impacted on the game .One of the Subs scored a goal as well. Rosenior is a good tactician and out thought Carrick that's why Hull won . He's an underrated manager who could well get Hull promoted this season.

Not sure Hull are good enough for automatic promotion and the playoffs are a lottery but likely to include Leeds and Southampton.

| Swansea City v Middlesbrough: Match day thread on 08:42 - Dec 16 with 3927 views | RichardO | It has been stated that we haven't moved the ball on at pace and yet over the years we have played some nice football through the park. Duff in is haste to get the ball further up the park early in the season resorted to quicker balls without pace in the team to support the players up front leaving them isolating resulting in loosing control of the ball or chasing poor quality balls, he then went through a nice period of wins but then Duff resorted to try keeping control of the ball trying to ensure we we defensively strong against so called better teams but it was all too slow and has ended up very similar to Martin's dogmatic style and Coopers second half of his second season defensive setup both of which struggled to get the ball forward quickly to support the play early further up the park. Cooper obviously got us points, Martin's teams went on nice encouraging winning streaks and even Duff for a small time gave a glimmer of hope with a nice small number of good results. So what was the difference in those good times well in my opinion what lacking is youth, pace and energy in the middle to get the ball to and support the more experienced players around the park whether it be out wide, up front or across the backline shifting the play and the opposition around making us hard to predict and counter. Cooper in earlier games didn't have Hourihane doing the same things as Grimes but had youth around him to support him, Martin ended up having the likes of Cundle and Cooper even a fit Joe Allen( forget the youth bit but you could never fault his work rate with the added skill) You could look at Ntcham and Paterson as good options but never together why because as a pair they weren't defensively minded to support Grimes. Duff had Paterson and Patino whose quick pkay supported Grimes which allowed Grimes further up the pitch which bore good results even though we looked a bit shaky in defence. Basically you do not want Grimes left supported with slow players around him and you definitely don't to rely on him as your defensive anchor in the middle of the park, by all means play to his strength whatever those are perceived to be but we should not rely on him to marking pacey wingers on our halfway line or taking corners both of which successive managers have withdrawn those duties from him because of breakaway goals conceded and ineffectual floated corners which have not regularly posed threat to the opposition leaving people to question why dangerous aerial players cannot get a decent powerful head on the ball. So let's see how Fulton has aided Grimes over the years he has been a box to box player, he has offered a defensive support , has been know to win the ball in the air regularly in a midfield when needed but now in an effort to emulate Grimes, he has lost an edged that made him a nuisance to the opposition and now is more inclined to drop back the same as Grimes we don't need both doing the same. You could say that Grimes has had youth in the shape of Downes but at that time our defence was short of one or three players, we can't complain about not having the defenders this season although injuires have left us a bit short on the right but not short enough to justify the gaps we have seen in the middle of the park. If you play both Fulton and Grimes you need a good all round player which would relieve Grimes of his defensive duties. [Post edited 16 Dec 2023 8:48]

Yes Rich, time we sold him. No team however wants a player like Grimesy, foot on ball, motionless , in the centre half position with opposing forwards closing him down . It’s fundamental to how crap we are
